Prepare yourself for “The Snappening.” A huge database of Snapchat photos and videos maintained by a third party has been hacked, and many years’ worth of files are being distributed on 4chan. Users have dubbed it “The Snappening,” and 13 GB-worth of files (many of them explicit) are now available for anyone to view. The BBC points out that about half of Snapchat’s users are between the ages of 13 and 17, so there is justifiable concern that many of the leaked photos and videos will be of minors. It’s also important to note that the leak did not come from Snapchat itself; the company pointed out in a statement that: “Snapchatters were victimised by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users’ security. We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many of these removed.” The hack allows people to search the database by username, and appears likely to have emanated from the app SnapSaved (which no longer exists). It’s unclear if there will be more celebrities affected by this leak, but it serves as yet another cautionary tale about taking or sending any kind of compromising photograph on your phone. For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperNewsPlanet Hong Kong's government has called off talks with pro-democracy protesters, as political rivals repeated calls for leader C.Y. Leung to resign -- this time over claims that he accepted multi-million dollar private payments while in office. The government negotiator, Hong Kong Chief Secretary Carrie Lam announced the cancellation of talks Thursday, hours after protest leaders encouraged supporters to keep up their occupation of city streets. "We cannot accept the linkage of dialog with occupying activities," Lam said, prompting protest groups to announce the official start of a "non-cooperation" movement, and new calls for supporters to pack the main protest site "beyond its capacity" on Friday night. Earlier on Thursday, political rivals rounded on Leung after a report by Australia's Fairfax Media that he received $6.4 million ($HK50 million) in undisclosed payouts from Australian engineering group UGL while in office. According to the report, Leung signed the contract in December 2011, entitling him to payouts from UGL, which had recently bought the assets of Leung's employer, troubled British property agent DTZ. Months after the deal was signed, Hong Kong's 1,200-member Election Committee appointed Leung as chief executive of the Special Administrative Region of China. Two payments of $3 million (HK$25 million) were allegedly made in 2012 and 2013, during the time Leung was in office. In a statement on Thursday, both UGL and Leung's office defended the contract, calling it a "standard non-poach, non-compete arrangement." Payments were staggered over a two-year period to ensure Leung complied with both obligations, UGL said. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them. In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border. As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State. The BBC points out that about half of Snapchat’s users are between the ages of 13 and 17, so there is justifiable concern that many of the leaked photos and videos will be of minors. It’s also important to note that the leak did not come from Snapchat itself; the company pointed out in a statement that:

“Snapchatters were victimised by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users’ security. We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many of these removed.”

The hack allows people to search the database by username, and appears likely to have emanated from the app SnapSaved (which no longer exists). It’s unclear if there will be more celebrities affected by this leak, but it serves as yet another cautionary tale about taking or sending any kind of compromising photograph on your phone.

Hong Kong\'s government has called off talks with pro-democracy protesters, as political rivals repeated calls for leader C.Y. \

U.S. stock index futures edged higher on Thursday, indicating the previous session\'s massive rally could be extended amid relief over the Federal Reserve\'s interest rate policy. Major indexes posted their biggest one-day jump of the year on Wednesday in a broad advance after the Federal Reserve reassured investors its first rate hike would come when economic data pointed to an economy that could grow without Fed stimulus, rather than on a specific schedule. Wednesday\'s was the latest in a series of volatile sessions; the S&P 500 moved 45.

As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure.

Warning: some viewers may find these images distressing.

On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil.
