Disheartened when his story about Canadian snipers possibly mutilating corpses in Afghanistan is buried, Luke (Nick Stahl) quits his job but is even more determined to return to Afghanistan to get the real story. With his offbeat buddy, Tom (Nicolas Wright), tagging along, Luke returns to Afghanistan and intends to gather enough evidence to get his old story into print. But he soon finds that the country is an even more dangerous place than when he left. To make matters worse, his old friend and fixer, Mateen (Stephen Lobo) has been hired away by Luke's journalistic nemesis, Imran Sahar (Vik Sahay). Soon the trip for Luke and Tom in Afghanistan turns into a surreal and perilous adventure, a journey into an alternate reality, filtered through a haze of gun smoke.

Before leaving on his second tour in Afghanistan, Marine Captain Sam Cahill, a leader, an athlete, a good husband and father, welcomes his screw-up brother Tommy home from prison. He'd robbed a bank. In country, Sam's helicopter is shot down and all are presumed dead. Back home, while Sam wastes away as a prisoner in a remote encampment, Tommy tries to take care of the widow and her two children. While imprisoned, Sam experiences horrors unbearable, so when he's rescued and returns home, he's silent, detached, without affect, and he's convinced his wife and brother have slept together. Demons of war possess him; what will silence them?

The Pakistani Taliban have expressed their support for Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria and Iraq. In a statement marking the Muslim festival of Eid, the group appealed to Islamists there to unite against the "enemy" - the US-led alliance. IS has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq, but has also been battling al-Qaeda-linked rival militant groups. The Pakistani Taliban has been waging its own insurgency against the Islamabad government since 1997. 'Forget rivalries' Saturday's statement was issued by the leader of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Maulana Fazlullah, sent by his spokesman. Addressing IS in Syria and Iraq, he said: "We are proud of your conquests against the enemies. We are with you in good and bad times." "In these troubled days, we call on you to be patient and stay united as your enemies are now united against you. Forget rivalries." The statement said the global Muslim community would "stand by you in these tough times and help with what we can". The BBC's Shaimaa Khalil in Islamabad says there has been little evidence so far of an agreement between IS and the Pakistani Taliban. But recently, our correspondent adds, supporters of IS have been spotted in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar distributing pamphlets praising the group. IS's swift offensives in Iraq since June have prompted the US and its allies to carry out air strikes to halt the group's advance. On Saturday, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Shia militiamen drove IS fighters from a strategically important bridge near the northern city of Kirkuk. In Syria, IS has been advancing on the town of Kobane, on the Turkish border, which has become a key battleground between the militants and its opponents, who include Kurdish fighters as well. More than 160,000 Syrians, mainly Kurds, have fled across the border since IS launched its offensive on Kobane last month. More than 190,000 people have been killed in more than three years of conflict in Syria.

An apparently errant tweet by the Taliban's spokesman in Afghanistan has given his location as being in neighbouring Pakistan. On Friday, the tweet by Zabihullah Mujahid, which was claiming an attack, included geolocation information that suggested he sent the message from Sindh, Pakistan. Mujahid later sent a tweet on Saturday describing the location leak as an "enemy plot". He also offered his Afghan telephone number to confirm his identity and wrote: "With full confidence, I can say that I am in my own country." Twitter says such geolocation data is based on latitude and longitude data or other information provided by users at the time of their message. In an explanation of geolocation, Twitter itself warns: "Remember, once you post something online, it's out there for others to see."

We are with you in your happiness and your sorrow," said the statement by Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman, on Saturday. "In these troubled days, we call for your patience and stability, especially now that all your enemies are united against you. Please put all your rivalries behind you. "All Muslims in the world have great expectations of you... we are with you, we will provide you with fighters and with every possible support." The statement was released in Urdu, Pashto and Arabic and came on a day when two attacks hit Pakistan.
