"Éthiopie" is a charity song recorded in 1985 by the collective band known under the name 'Chanteurs sans Frontières'. The song achieved a huge success in France, topping the chart for two months and becoming one of the best-selling singles in that country.
Chanteurs sans Frontières was a French association founded in 1985 following the Anglo-Saxon model of the band Band Aid with the same purpose : providing assistance to victims of the famine then raging in Ethiopia. The association was presided by Antoine di Zazzo, the general director of EMI Pathé Marconi, and was led by Dominique Quiliquini (Renaud's wife), Francis Cabrel (treasurer), Franck Langolff (composer of music) and Rony Brauman (president of Médecins sans Frontières. The idea of a single was found by Valérie Lagrange and under the direction of Renaud.
The song was written by Renaud and the music composed by Franck Langolff. It was produced by Franck Langolff and Thomas Noton.
The total donations reached 23,000,000 francs distributed to various associations : Médecins sans Frontières (90%), AICF, Médecins du monde, and Restos du Cœur.
Daniel Balavoine (5 February 1952 – 14 January 1986) was a French singer and songwriter. He was hugely popular in the French-speaking world, and inspired many singers in the 1980s, such as Jean-Jacques Goldman, and Michel Berger, his closest friend. He took part in French political life and is known for a 1980 televised verbal confrontation with François Mitterrand.
In the French music-business, Balavoine earned his own place with both his powerful voice, his wide range and his lyrics, which were full of sadness and revolt. He was emphatic, and his songs for the most part talked about despair, pain, and death. Hope was present as a theme, as well. He sold more than 20 million records during his career.
Daniel Balavoine was the youngest in a family of six children. He had 2 sisters and 3 brothers. His father, Emile, is an urban engineer and worked for the Reconstruction Ministry. His mother was an antics wholesaler. In 1959, his father relocated to Algeria and Balavoine moved to southern city of Pau and attended a boarding school, an experience which Balavoine clearly didn't appreciate. When he was 11, he heard She Loves You by The Beatles which sparked his taste in music.
[Flea:]
"We're rolling everybody. it starts with bass."
E I o I e I a
When you give your love away,
You get a feeling for...
E I o I e I a
Live to love another day,
Even when you feel unsure.
More and more I wanna raise!
Raise my bar and raise your stay.
E I o I e I a
When I lie they're wide awake,
For my son I make
[Chorus:]
Tell my boy I love him so,
Tell him so he know.
Lost in ethiopia,
Walk out in that road.
E I o I e I a
Something good gon' come your way,
Just look out your door.
E I o I e I a
Tell him what you wanna say,
No matter whatcha mad at girl.
[Chorus:]
Tell my boy I love him so,
Tell him so he know.
Lost in ethiopia,
Walk out in that road.
E I o I e I a
Steal my heart to give away,
Make me wanna say.
E I o I e I a
You and I are so no same,
More and more and more each day.
[Chorus:]
Tell my boy I love him so,
Tell him so he know.
Lost in ethiopia,
Hot winds and hunger cries--Ethiopia
Flies in your babies' eyes--Ethiopia
Walking sticks on burning plains
Betrayed by politics
Abandoned by the rains
On and on--the human need
On and on--the human greed profanes
Ethiopia--Ethiopia--Ethiopia
Your top soil flies away--Ethiopia
We pump ours full of poison spray--Ethiopia
Between the brown skies and sprinkling lawns
I hear the whine of chain saws
Hacking rain forests down
On and on--insanities
On and on--Short sighted greed abounds
Ethiopia--Ethiopia--Ethiopia
Little garden planet-oasis in space
Some hearts hurt--they can hardly stand it
Famine phantoms at the garden gates
Ethiopia--Ethiopia--Ethiopia
Every Sunday on T.V.--Ethiopia
You suffer with such dignity--Ethiopia
A T.V. star with a P.R. smile
Calls your baby "it" while strolling
Through your tragic trials
On and on--stupidity
On and on--the basic needs are defiled
Good air--good water--good earth
Ethiopia--Ethiopia--Ethiopia
Little garden planet--oasis in space
Some hearts hurt--they can hardly stand the waste
Ethiopia--Ethiopia--Ethiopia
