LAPITA VILLAGE HUAHINE
A little clip of Huahine's newest treasure - the Lapita Village.
This is a unique hotel offering both large overwater bungalows set around an interior pond and spacious garden bungalows.
Built around the oldest archeological site in French Polynesia, it has a beachfront swimming pool overlooking Raiatea and Tahaa. Paintings of artist Bobby Holcomb and polynesian artifacts decorate the bungalows and the property conceived by local artist Peter Owen. Culture and History are part of the experience.
This hotel has an exceptional staff and a genuine polynesian soul.

Evolution of Modern Humans - J. Koji Lum, Binghamton University
The origin of the Lapita Cultural Complex: Analyses of mtDNA from ³long² and ³short² pigs
J. Koji Lum, PhD
Associate Professor of Anthropology and Biological Sciences, Laboratory of Evolutionary Anthropology and Health, Binghamton University,
The archaeological record of the human settlement of the Pacific describes two discreet periods of range expansion. Some of the earliest evidence of modern humans outside of Africa is found in the Pacific dated to 60,000 years ago. By 29,000 years ago humans had settled the intervisible islands extending from New Guinea to the central Solomon Islands, known as Near Oceania. Approximately 3,500 years ago a second group of settlers entered the Pacific, rapidly moved through Near Oceania, and settled Remote Oceania, the remaining archipelagoes of the Pacific. These latter voyagers are characterized archaeologically by a distinct material culture known as the Lapita cultural complex that includes intricately decorated pottery and the transport of pigs, dogs, chickens, and rats.
We recently examined a group of Remote Oceanic pigs to gain insights into the geographic origin of the Lapita People and their cultural complex unavailable in the human data. These data suggest that Pacific pigs were recently domesticated within Southeast Asia rapidly selected for compact, canoe-friendly size, and then dispersed during the human colonization of Remote Oceania associated with the Lapita cultural complex. These Pacific pigs are most closely related to wild boars dispersed throughout Southeast Asia, but not Taiwan. These data suggest that the Lapita Cultural Complex may have arisen in mainland Southeast Asia and that the currently favored hypothesis of a Taiwanese origin may be an artifact of recent human population replacements within Southeast Asia.

"Lapita" Song
"Lapita" Song
This video project was made for my ANT 104 Lost Tribes and Buried Cities class and hopefully the class enjoys it! I made the vocals sound "unprofessional" on purpose because I wanted to make an example that you don't have to sound perfect to be creative. (Plus my singing voice doesn't sound good when I can't take the lyrics seriously.) If you want to hear the "Lapita" song on its own, just leave a comment with that request and I'll put it up on soundcloud.com/dee_tops . The other relaxing song, "Existence" is already on my soundcloud if you want to listen to it whole, which I recommend you do. Other than that, here are the lyrics to follow along with the song: Verse 1: This is a song, of the Lapita They traveled through Polynesia And they are known for their sea navigation They managed to settle around the Pacific Islands And they started on from 1600 Onto 500 BCE And they were named, after their pottery Which involved beakers, pots, and bowls... yeah Rap: Wanna know where their language came from? / Madagascar's where it all begun / But the Lapita people started up around Taiwan / That's an important piece of info that you gotta remember / Cuz they settled the Remote Oceania area, far and wide / But you know, it took them a whole lot of time / Since way back 1600 BCE is where they started from / And over time, settled Polynesia and some beyond / For exchange, they traded obsidian, adze, and shells / Yeah, since, uh, they gotta keep their settlements well / To keep on hunting, fishing, and gathering mollusks / And most importantly, to take care of their crops and bananas / And their pottery? You know that's what they're pretty much known for / It's history was from 1350 to 750 BCE / A lot of it was fairly plain, and the rare shards, well / They're designed pretty nicely, ask the professor himself / Do you recall that I told you to remember a piece of info? / That whole "language started in Madagascar" thing, you know / It influenced the Lapita and they passed it on / All the way to Easter Island and on and on ! Verse 2: They grew fruit and nut bearing trees And domesticated pigs, chickens, and doggies Proto-Oceanic was most likely their language And some lived on the coast, where they fished And they designed their pottery Decorated with toothlike stamps Lapita held burials, where they decapitated their fallen And reburied their heads along with cone shell rings They were known for inhabiting islands And pottery early as 1350 BCE Adze, fish hooks, and obsidian The artifacts Lapita used for tools Outro: And they lived in stilt built houses In and around large and small islands And their descendants, the Polynesians Would travel through Hawaii and all around And they started on from 1600 Onto 500 BCE This is a song, of the Lapita And they were named, after their pottery Thumbs up for attempted Optimus Prime voice! :D- published: 08 Apr 2014
