Once every 5 days, they set up their stalls here. This space is not exclusively for full time merchants. People who grow crops on small plots of land come sell their produce. Fresh produce at affordable prices and in generous portions. These are the norms of marketplaces. Iksan Bukbujang Market is different in the sense that it's not open every day. Markets like the one in Iksan, which opens every 5 days, are called the 5th Day Market. In Korea today, there are more than 300 venues for such markets. *A special space that opens every 5 days Nohwa Island. From the southernmost town of the Korean peninsula, you must take a half our boat ride to get there. A market will be set up here. The residents of Nohwado bring the vegetables from their farms and the freshly caught seafood and set them up for sale. Algae and laver are their proudest specialties. The most popular items in Nohwa Market are products like shoes and clothes. The islanders rarely get a chance to shop for such products, so on cold days warm underwear, socks and shoes are best sellers. When the Nohwa Market opens, nearby islanders also gather to shop. Nohwa market is a place for islanders to congregate and interact every 5 days. *A place where extra helpings of love are the norm 5th Day Markets can be found outside the rural setting, too. Take the subway and one can head to an urban 5th Day Market. The biggest 5th day market in Korea is the Moran Market. Tasty treats, entertaining sights and excellent products. City dwellers flock to the market for these reasons and more. It's a great place for family outings. It's where children can experience traditional Korean culture and where grown ups reminisce about old times. The 5th Day Market of Korea does not have a long history. It's not a place solely for business. The passion and love of Koreans can be clearly witnessed here at the 5th day market. That is why the tradition will live on. 삶과 추억의 공간, 오일장 * 특별한 시간과 공간에서 펼쳐지는 장터 어둠이 가시지 않은 새벽. 농촌지역에 위치한 중소도시 '익산시'의 공터가 분주해진다. 5일에 한번 상인들이 모여 자신의 노점가게를 준비하기 때문이다. 이곳에는 전문 상인들만 장사를 하기 위해 모여드는 것이 아니다. 인근 시골에서 농사를 짓는 할머니들도 텃밭에서 키운 작물을 들고 나와 좌판을 펼친다. 싱싱한 물건과 저렴한 가격, 그리고 푸짐한 양은 이런 난전의 상징처럼 되어있다. '익산 북부장'이라 불리는 이 난전은 매일 열리는 상설시장이 아니다. '익산 북부장'을 비롯해 5일마다 한 번씩 열리는 이 독특한 시장을 총칭해 '오일장'이라고 부른다. 한국에는 현재 3백 여 군데가 넘는 오일장이 존재한다. * 5일마다 열리는 삶의 공간 한반도 최남단 마을에서도 30분 가량 배를 타고 가야 만날 수 있는 섬, 노화도. 이곳 섬에도 오일장이 선다. 노화도에 사는 주민들이 자신들의 텃밭에서 키운 채소와 바다에서 캔 것을 들고 나와 좌판을 편다. 섬마을답게 해초류는 빠지지 않는 품목이다. 노화장에서 가장 인기 있는 품목은 옷과 신발 같은 공산품이다. 뭍에서 떨어져 있기 때문에 장날 배를 타고 들어오는 상인들이 아니면 좀처럼 구하기 힘들기 때문이다. 요즘처럼 추운 날에는 따뜻한 내복과 양말, 신발이 최고의 베스트셀러다. 노화장이 열리면 인근 섬사람들이 장을 보기 위해 몰려든다. 노화장은 흩어져 있던 섬사람들이 5일 마다 서로의 안부를 확인하는 공간이기도 하다. *사람들 간의 정을 느끼는 도심의 오일장 오일장은 시골에서만 열리는 것은 아니다. 서울에서 지하철을 타고 갈 수 있는 도심 속 오일장이 있다. 한국에서 제일 큰 규모의 오일장, '모란장'이다. 맛있는 간식과 다양한 볼거리, 저렴하고 싱싱한 물건은 도시의 사람들을 이곳으로 불러 모은다. 모란장은 가족들에게는 나들이 코스로, 어린아이들의 전통체험 장소로, 그리고 나이든 사람들에게는 어린 시절 향수를 느낄 수 있는 장소다. 한국의 오일장은 오래된 풍습이 아니다. 물건만 사고파는 정형화 된 마켓도 아니다. 한국인의 정(情)과 치열한 삶이 존재하는 곳, 오일장. 그것이 오늘날 오일장이 계속 열리는 이유다.
