Proslepsis and apophasis are logical arguments used to describe something as it is (affirmation or positively) and what it is not (negation or negatively). The proofs are not irreconcilable. God affirms and negates much about Himself: - He is the Creator of the world (Gen. 1:1) - He is Lord and Supreme Being (Ex. 3:14) - He is not a false god (Ex. 7:14-12:36) - He is All-Merciful and All-Just (Ex. 34:6) - He is not like man (Num. 23:19) - He is Absolute (Isa. 9:5) - He is Father and Savior (Isa 63:16) - He is the Trinity (Mt. 28:19) - He is Spirit (Jn. 4:24) - He is the Life and Resurrection (Jn. 11:25) - He is the Way, Life and Truth (Jn. 14:6) - He is Love (1 Jn. 4:8) - He is the Judge of the world (Rev. 20:11) What these names have in common is that they use human knowledge and language to name God from Creation, since every thing resembles Him; so we know God in a limited way as His finite creatures. Together, apophatic and prosleptic theologies are like a safeguard against various errors: polytheism, the belief in more than one God; pantheism, the belief that everything is God; atheism, the belief that God does not exist; agnosticism, the belief God cannot be known; deism, the belief reason suffices to know God; maltheism, the belief that God is malicious; and the errors' corresponding sins, by way of misunderstanding man's imitation of and share in God: polytheism and polygamy, etc. Some theologians say "God does not exist" as a way of saying "God is not like anything that exists, for He is Absolute", while other theologians say "God does not know Himself" as a way of saying "God does not know as we human beings or other creatures know, for He is the Lord." Truth can seem wrong, yet error cannot be justified as the truth; and obsessing over Divine Names can lead to sin, while overemphasizing negation or affirmation can lead to grave doctrinal error. So let's stick with the Church, who, as the Mystical Body of Christ, has the Mind of Christ, Who in turn, as God and Man, is Divine Revelation. Misotheism is the "hatred of God" or "hatred of the gods" (from the Greek adjective μισόθεος "hating the gods", a compound of μῖσος "hatred" and θεός "god"). In some varieties of polytheism, it was considered possible to inflict punishment on gods by ceasing to worship them. Thus, Hrafnkell, protagonist of the eponymous Icelandic saga set in the 10th century, as his temple to Freyr is burnt and he is enslaved states that "I think it is folly to have faith in gods", never performing another sacrifice, a position described in the sagas as goðlauss "godless". Jacob Grimm in his Teutonic Mythology observes that:
In monotheism, the sentiment arises in the context of theodicy (the problem of evil, the Euthyphro dilemma). A famous literary expression of misotheistic sentiment is Goethe's Prometheus, composed in the 1770s.
A related concept is dystheism (Greek δύσθεος "ungodly"), the belief that a god is not wholly good, and is possibly evil. Trickster gods found in polytheistic belief systems often have a dystheistic nature. One example is Eshu, a trickster god from Yoruba mythology who deliberately fostered violence between groups of people for his own amusement, saying that "causing strife is my greatest joy."
