Meeting of the Minds 2013: E Recycling and Rare Earth Element Reuse
The ultimate question that we hope to answer with this research project is to identify the most feasible, cost effective, and efficient way to recycle and reuse rare earth elements to be extracted from used electronics and other devices. When China, the world's leading exporter, closed its borders to rare earth element trade, the United States along with many other countries was forced to find other means of obtaining these critical materials in order to maintain production. The U.S. Department of Energy has begun to develop a critical materials strategy, which includes support of possible rare earth element recycling using retired electronics. Professor Kelvin Gregory will support this research team in doing an on campus survey of Carnegie Mellon policies regarding retired electronics as well as a feasibility study of all current possible methods to recycle the critical elements within these electronics to be used again. By coming up with our own strategy regarding electronic recycling and rare earth metal reuse, we can then share that information with other universities, companies, and organizations to decrease the U.S. need for imported critical elements.- published: 28 Oct 2013

Growth and Decay
Demand for resources in the consumer world is ever increasing. Investments are made to search for locations deeper inside the world's last remaining natural landscapes that have remained unchanged for millennia. The western world encroaches upon the civilizations of primitive tribes that sustain their existence from the rich ecosystems of the rainforest. In the near future the last native tribes of the amazon rainforest will become engulfed within the world of money, consumption and modern commodity.
Rare earth elements are a set of seventeen metal elements that are essential to many of today's modern technologies and products. China supply 97% of the world's rare earth element demands today but have now restricted their exports to the rest of the world, forcing other nations to depend on their own supply of the metals. The amazon rainforest is one location in which these elements can be found in large quantities. However, what implications would this have upon the fragile environment of the amazon rainforest?
This project represents the process of growth and decay as the western world searches for new horizons in which to extract resources to enable growth. With the discovery of these precious resources comes great riches and as has been seen with the gold and diamond towns of the americas and the oil rich middle east, cities grow rapidly. The city grows as the resources decay. Yet, what happens when the supply runs dry? When the riches can no longer be extracted? What future does our consumer civilization have without the balance of growth and decay?

[RARE EARTH SCULPTURES] NEODYMIUM / DYSPROSIUM / EUROPIUM E N E R G Y : P A N G E A @ extra extra
11/11/11 - 12/11/11
The Rare Earth Sculpture project is an object-orientated Thinktank developed by Iain Ball for energypangea.org. The project aims to create an alternative energy supply which is injected into each Rare Earth Element. This Energy is formalized into info-matter by creating new connections and associations with the metals, their use-value, geopolitics and extraction processes. In Neodymium / Dysprosium / Europium the three sculptures are hedged against each other in a three-way axis of meaning. Neodymium presents an allegory of the R-Complex in relation to a confounding analysis of the Sun-Earth dualism. Dysprosium acts as an offering to The Rare Earth Technology Development Team Created by Toshiba to harness the Rare Earth by-products of Uranium Mining in Kazakhstan. And Europium uses the forests of the United Kingdom and Continental Europe as a site to promote the accelerated oxidation of the metal symbolic of restrictions imposed on its exports from China.
All of this is intent in addressing many of the ways in which we manage, market and profit from the resources and precious metals in the technology we consume today and how these new materials might be developed and manipulated in an increasingly unstable world.

First Look: PRG Foton Remote Phosphor Lighting
The new PRG TruColor Foton light uses a unique technology called “remote phosphor.” An internal light source strikes a crystal impregnated with rare earth elements that then glows brightly. The large surface of the emitter allows for a precise mix of the phosphorescent material for accurate colors across the visible spectrum. By physically separating the phosphor plate from the light source within the unit, heat management keeps the material from baking and changing color over time. The Foton delivers accurate colors and does so for the life of the product and it is also flicker-free.
The AbelCine Foton kit includes a set of three interchangeable reflectors (wide, medium, flood), barndoors, and an AC power supply with a gland-seal waterproof connector. The light fixture itself is sealed and water resistant. The Foton consumes only 30w but is equivalent in output to a 150w tungsten light. It is fully dimmable with no color change and no flicker.
Watch my video for more on the Foton and remote phosphor lighting technology.

Atacama Starry Nights: Episode I
Make sure to watch this full-screen with the sound on! Featured on the National Geographic News: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2012/02/21/new-time-lapse-gives-rare-glimpse-at-atacamas-starry-nights/
Astronomer's Paradise is the first episode of Atacama Starry Nights timelapse movie series. Cerro Paranal is truly an astronomers paradise with its stunningly dark, steady and transparent sky. Located in the barren Atacama Desert of Chile it is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. Operated by the European Southern Observatory (www.eso.org) the Very Large Telescope (VLT) is located on Paranal, composed of four 8 m telescopes which can combine their light to make a giant telescope by interferometry. Four smaller auxiliary telescopes, each 1.8 m in aperture, are important elements of the VLT interferometer.
Walking on the desert near Paranal between the scattered stones and boulders on the pale red dust feels like being on Mars but under the Earth sky. It is an amazing experience to be under an ideal night sky, a pure natural beauty unspoiled by urban lights. On Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert you look all around the horizon and there is no prominent sign of city lights, neither direct lights or light domes. There are not many locations left on this planet where you can still experience a dark sky like this. I have been to similar dark skies in other continents from the heart of Sahara in Algeria to Himalayas or islands in the Pacific. But what makes Atacama beat others is being dry and clear for so many nights per year. Paranal was selected for cutting edge astronomical observations also because of the sky transparency and steady atmospheric condition which let astronomers peer in to tiny details in the deep cosmos using giant telescopes.
This footage is made during an imaging expedition to Paranal assigned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The music is by Carbon Based Lifeforms (www.carbonbasedlifeforms.net). Song Arecibo extract from the album [Twentythree], write & produced by Johannes Hedberg and Daniel Segerstad, published by Ultimae (www.ultimae.com).
