Eng/Arabic/Nat
For more than a week, Sudan and Egypt have buzzed with bitter talk of war, a fight for God and country over a disputed desert strip near the Red Sea and use of the Nile's water.
But as Sudanese leaders pledged not to attack Egypt - echoing an Egyptian pledge of non-aggression - it's increasingly clear that the rallies and banners are part of another war - the one at home.
Since the June 26th attempted assassination of Egyptian President Mubarak in Ethiopia, relations between Sudan and Egypt have reached crisis point.
A bitter dispute over use of the Nile waters and border problems shows no sign of being reconciled.
SOUNDBITE: Arabic/translation:
It is clear to us that under the present Egyptian leadership, the situation is not very optimistic, because we have, truly, made every effort there is to return the relationship (Sudan/Egypt) to what it should be - even develop it. We realise the importance of the Egyptian-Sudanese relationship, whether for the sake of the Egyptian people or the Sudanese, and we have tried to develop this relationship. All our efforts have not only been met with rejection, but with conspiracy, attack and war (armed confrontation).
SUPER CAPTION: Lt. Gen. Omar el-Bashir, Sudanese Leader
Lt. Gen. Omar el-Bashir overthrew Sudan's democratically elected government in 1989. Since then the country's militant Islamic agenda has wrecked its relations with most neighbours and its economy is in shambles with a long running civil war showing no sign of ending.
Both sides have recently backed down over the use of military aggression in the conflict.
Although denied by Sudan, Egypt is concerned that the Nile's waters will be used as a means to put pressure on them by the Sudanese Islamic government.
Hassan al Turabi, the Islamic leader, wants Egypt to recognise Sudan's borders:
SOUNDBITE: English
But if people are provoked naturally they react. If the tension rises then - their reaction rises. I wouldn't be surprised if one day if you don't recognise international relationships on the frontier with Sudan and Egypt who would recognise international relationships on water supplies.
SUPER CAPTION: Hassan al Turabi, Islamic Leader
He still believes Egypt is responsible for the current deterioration in relations between the two neighbours:
SOUNDBITE:
Sudan wanted negotiations or an arbitration or court of justice, an international court of justice but the Egyptian say this is their land, which they only now discover to be their own and they want to take it by force.
SUPER CAPTION: Hassan al Turabi, Islamic Leader
Turabi has worked tirelessly to make the country a showcase of Islamic rule. But the world accuses it of exporting Muslim radicalism.
SOUNDBITE: English
I'm not surprised that the Americans, who know relatively little about the world believe it - but west Europeans - I don't think they should believe this about the country they have known before actually. There is absolutely no tradition of terrorism in Sudanese tradition at all.
SUPER CAPTION: Hassan al Turabi, Islamic Leader
Though neither country appears to want a war, it is believed that Sudan is using the crisis with Egypt to bolster the government, tapping festering resentment of what many Sudanese consider arrogance by its stronger, more populous neighbour.

A senior party official said on Monday that one of Sudan's main opposition parties will boycott elections set for April because a lack of democracy will not allow a fair vote, thereby diminishing the credibility of the ballot. The Popular Congress Party, led by veteran Islamist Hassan al-Turabi, is one of only a few notable opposition groups in Sudan who all accuse President Omar al-Bashir of manoeuvring to cling to power--despite a promise to step down in 2015. Bashir, 70, has ruled since a 1989 military coup and has weathered rebellions, economic crisis and an indictment by the International Criminal Court on suspicion of having orchestrated war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region.

STORYLINE
Sudan's security forces arrested the country's top Islamist opposition leader after he called for a Tunisia-style uprising in the country, family members said on Tuesday.
Hassan Turabi and his bodyguard were taken into custody around midnight on Monday, according to the family.
Around eight other members of Turabi's Islamic Popular Congress Party also were arrested, they said.
There was no official comment on the detentions from Sudanese authorities.
But the semi-official Sudan Media Centre quoted an unnamed high ranking security official as saying Turabi, who is the archrival of President Oman al-Bashir, and his party had been providing financial and political support to rebel movements in the troubled Darfur region.
Turabi is popular in Darfur and he is believed to be the mentor of the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, the most powerful Darfur rebel group.
Khartoum has accused Turabi before of fomenting the rebellion in Darfur.
The elder Turabi recently spoke out against al-Bashir's government and called for a popular revolt similar to the one in Tunisia that toppled that country's authoritarian president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
A recent hike in the price of oil and basic commodities has sparked protests by university students and calls for the resignation of local officials.
Turabi's challenge to al-Bashir's government came at a tumultuous time for Sudan.
Voters in the country's south on Saturday wrapped up a week-long referendum on independence that is widely expected to see southern Sudan split off into a new country.
Al-Bashir, who is wanted on an international indictment for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the western region of Darfur, also faces rebellions in the west and east, as well as internal political opposition.
Turabi was the driving force behind the 1989 military coup that brought al-Bashir to power before.
The two set up an Islamist-style government, until they fell out in 1999, and Turabi set up his own party.
He was the only Sudanese politician who has dared say al-Bashir should surrender to an international court.
Turabi has been arrested several times in the past, most recently in May when he was held for seven weeks.
