A proa is an outrigger sailing canoe, developed in ancient times by Oceanic people. Using folk technology, they brought proas to an almost impossibly high pitch of refinement---long before there was epoxy or plywood or carbon fiber or Western yachtsmen. Still, it's hard not to keep tinkering with Westernized versions of the proa idea, as John Harris has been doing at Chesapeake Light Craft. As a follow-up to his 20-foot proa Mbuli, he has designed and built a 31-footer with cruising accommodations. This video details the proa rationale, the design process, construction of the stitch-and-glue hulls, and arrival of the completed boat at Chesapeake Light Craft. Many thanks to Russell Brown for his patient input and consultation, Carey Martin, Olivier DuPont-Huin, and Mark Bayne for boatbuilding help, and Kerry Harris for the video! This started out as a review and ended up as a rant. There is a good chance that the one that I had was defective, the rest of the review was more focused on its cheap design and the price point of it. Basically it feels like something that will easily break and at $39.00 it's way overpriced considering the same model is on eBay for under $12 (with free shipping).

Proa
A proa, also seen as prau, perahu, and prahu, is a type of multihull sailboat.
While the word perahu and proa are generic terms meaning boat in their native languages, proa in Western languages has come to describe a vessel consisting of two (usually) unequal length parallel hulls. It is sailed so that one hull is kept to windward, and the other to leeward, so that it needs to "shunt" to reverse direction when tacking. The English term proa usually refers specifically to the South Pacific proa as described in the journals of the British ship HMS Centurion.
The perahu traditional outrigger boat is most numerous in the various islands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. These differ from the South Pacific vessels. Traditional proas superficially resemble outrigger canoes, but have a buoyant lee hull and a denser, ballasted hull to windward for stability.
To Americans, the boats of the Marianas Islands are arguably the most recognizable version.
The modern proa exists in a wide variety of forms, from the traditional archetype still common in areas described, to high-technology interpretations specifically designed for breaking speed-sailing records.

Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician, author, and physician, who is a former Republican congressman, two-time Republican presidential candidate, and the presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party in the 1988 U.S. presidential election.

Still, it's hard not to keep tinkering with Westernized versions of the proa idea, as John Harris has been doing at Chesapeake Light Craft. As a follow-up to his 20-foot proa Mbuli, he has designed and built a 31-footer with cruising accommodations.
