Old US Hwy 80 in Arizona - forgotten Arizona highways - once a transcontinental highway
A brief video slide show of the very beautiful Old US Hwy 80 in Arizona. Twisting through Arizona like a serpent, old 80 once tied together such far-flung towns such as Douglas and Yuma with the more urbanized centers of Phoenix and Tucson. Although completely decommissioned in Arizona, most of old 80 still exists as state or county highways. A member of the original 1926 US Highway family, old Highway 80 was once a truly grand route. A transcontinental highway stretching from coast to coast.

US Route 66 Road Trip Arizona Part 1 Sept 1999
The next reel from my road trip on US66 from Sept 1999 going through Arizona. First of 2 parts. From the state line to Sitgreaves Pass. US66 was nicknamed "The Mother Road" / "Main Street USA" / "Will Rogers Highway". In it's heydey US66, Christened in Nov of 1926 and decertified in 1985, was the road that connected Chicago to Los Angeles a generation before the Interstate came along. Over 2000 miles, Eight States, Three Time Zones makes for a great vacation trip. 80 percent of the road is intact, and in daily use with older original alignments. Some segments get you away from the interstate all together. Western Arizona is a great example. I taped this on my old VHS camera. The music in the background is coming from my tape and cd player. Enjoy.

Bloody Sunday
BLOODY SUNDAY The Selma-to-Montgomery March for voting rights ended three weeks--and three events--that represented the political and emotional peak of the modern civil rights movement. On "Bloody Sunday," March 7, 1965, some 600 civil rights marchers headed east out of Selma on US Route 80. They got only as far as the Edmund Pettus Bridge six blocks away, where state and local lawmen attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas and drove them back into Selma. Two days later on March 9, Martin Luther King, Jr., led a "symbolic" march to the bridge. Then civil rights leaders sought court protection for a third, full-scale march from Selma to the state capitol in Montgomery. Federal District Court Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr., weighed the right of mobility against the right to march and ruled in favor of the demonstrators. "The law is clear that the right to petition one's government for the redress of grievances may be exercised in large groups...," said Judge Johnson, "and these rights may be exercised by marching, even along public highways." On Sunday, March 21, about 3200 marchers set out for Montgomery, walking 12 miles a day and sleeping in fields. By the time they reached the capitol on Thursday, March 25, they were 25000-strong. Less than five months after the last of the three marches, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965--the best possible redress of grievances. Courtesy of www.nps.gov

Alabama Back Roads - YouTube HD Travel
Basically the only thing I knew of Alabama was the turbulent past of the civil rights movement. We got off the main interstate and took some of the back roads and found a beautiful rural setting that is present in many southern states. A statement to how things are is a lack of fences and window bars. Still the state has a history that everyone should be aware of especially the young. Freedom and rights come with a price. The Selma to Montgomery marches were three marches in 1965 that marked the political and emotional peak of the American civil rights movement. They grew out of the voting rights movement in Selma, Alabama, launched by local African-Americans who formed the Dallas County Voters League (DCVL). In 1963, the DCVL and organizers from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) began voter-registration work. When white resistance to Black voter registration proved intractable, the DCVL requested the assistance of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, who brought many prominent civil rights and civic leaders to support voting rights. The first march took place on March 7, 1965 — "Bloody Sunday" — when 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by state and local police with billy clubs and tear gas. The second march took place on March 9. Only the third march, which began on March 21 and lasted five days, made it to the state capital, Montgomery, 51 miles (82 km) away. The marchers averaged 10 miles (16 km) a day along ...

Metal Detecting Old Bridge Plus Bonus Ending
Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge (built 1927) carrying Old US Hwy 80 between Gila Bend and Buckeye, Arizona. In 1911, 84 delegates from Arizona, New Mexico, and California met in Phoenix and formed the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway Association. Their goal was to create a route far enough south to allow year round travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. Other regions were competing for the creation of the nation's first transcontinental highway. While this association's route did not have as large of population centers which it would be linking, it did have climate in its favor. Ultimately, another route was chosen - which I-80 roughly follows today - but since it was prone to closure during due to winter weather, the race was still on to create the first year round route. One of the goals of this proposed southern route was that it the highway would truly be open year round. In Arizona, the biggest problem in fulfilling this goal was the flood prone Gila River since both Phoenix and Tucson were to be on the route. A crossing needed to be created that would be above the flood levels. Plans were put in place to build a bridge across the Gila that met this goal. Frank Gillespie was a rancher who completed Gillespie Dam on the Gila River in 1921. He used water from the dam for his Paloma Ranch. The road used in the southern route passed next to this dam. Between 1921 and 1926, horse teams pulled automobiles across the apron of the dam. The dam was never meant to be a permanent ...

END WAR Pakistanis Protest Killing Of Civilians By CIA-Xe Drone Strikes; Block US Supply Route
How To Go To Heaven: www.jesus-is-savior.com news.antiwar.com US Killed 700 Civilians in Pakistan Drone Strikes in 2009 'Year of the Drone Strike' Netted Only Five Actual Militant Leaders Jason Ditz, January 02, 2010 On January 1, 2009, a US drone strike killed two senior al-Qaeda leaders, the first in what then President-elect Barack Obama had said would be a dramatic escalation of the aerial bombardment of Pakistan's tribal area. And escalate it did. The US launched 44 distinct drone strikes in Pakistan in 2009, far more than in previous years. The pinnacle of America's drone achievements was in August, when they killed Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Baitullah Mehsud. Much has been made of the successes, but while the strikes have been regular and they almost always are presented by Pakistan's intelligence community as having killed "suspects," the actual successes are few and far between, with only five confirmed kills of real militant leaders, and a handful of unconfirmed claims that usually haven't panned out. The vast majority of the deaths, around 700 according to one estimate, have been innocent civilians. With such a massive civilian toll and so little to show for it, it is no wonder that Pakistani people have been up in arms over the continued strikes. But US officials have rarely commented on the drone strikes, except on those rare occasions when they actually kill someone meaningful, and seem completely ambivalent to the hundreds of innocent people ...
