Vitaly Aleksandrovich Petrov (Russian: Виталий Александрович Петров, born 8 September 1984 in Vyborg) is a Russian Formula One racing driver who is driving for the Caterham F1 Team in 2012, having driven for Renault in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He is known as the "Vyborg Rocket" (Russian: Выборгская Ракета) in Russia. He is, to date, the only Russian to have competed in the Formula One World Championship.
Unlike most top drivers, Petrov did not begin his career in karting, as there was very little motorsport where he lived. He instead enrolled in the University of Moscow,[when?] where he gained a degree in meteorology. Afterwards he began competing in the Russian Lada Cup in 2001. He remained in the series for 2002 dominating the championship, winning all rounds and amassing the maximum points possible of 500.
In 2003, Petrov began racing in the Formula Renault championships. His main campaign was in the Italian Formula Renault Championship for Euronova Racing, finishing 19th overall. During the year he competed in several rounds of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the Formula Renault 2.0 UK series, and finished fourth in the British Formula Renault Winter Series at the end of the year, taking one win. He also made his debut in Euro Formula 3000 at Cagliari.
Fernando Alonso Díaz (born 29 July 1981) is a Spanish Formula One racing driver and a two-time World Champion, who is currently racing for Ferrari.
On 25 September 2005, he won the Formula One World Driver's Championship title at the age of 24 years and 58 days, at the time making him the youngest Formula One World Drivers' Champion. After retaining the title the following year, Alonso also became the youngest double Champion at the time. Nicknamed El Nano, a typical pseudonym for Fernando in Asturias, his place of birth, Alonso acts as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
Fernando Alonso was born in Oviedo, Asturias in northern Spain. His mother worked in a department store and his father was employed as a mechanic in an explosives factory near Oviedo. Alonso has an older sister, Lorena. Alonso's father José Luis, an amateur kart racer, wanted to pass on his passion to his children. He built a kart, originally meant for eight-year-old Lorena, but unlike her three-year-old brother, she showed no interest in the sport.
Felipe Massa (Portuguese pronunciation: [feˈlipi ˈmasɐ], born 25 April 1981) is a Brazilian Formula One racing driver. He finished second in the 2008 Drivers' World Championship, and is under contract to race for Scuderia Ferrari until the end of the 2012 season.
Born in São Paulo, Massa is a Brazilian whose grandfather emigrated from Cerignola, Italy.
Massa began karting when he was 8 years old, finishing fourth in his first season. He continued in national and international championships for 7 years, and in 1998 moved into Formula Chevrolet, finishing the Brazilian championship in fifth place. During the following season, he won 3 of the 10 races and claimed the championship. In 2000, he moved to Europe to compete in the Italian Formula Renault series, winning both the Italian and the European Formula Renault championships that year. He could have moved to Formula Three, but instead chose the Euro Formula 3000, where he won 6 of the 8 races and the championship. He was then offered a Formula 1 test with the Sauber team, who signed him for 2002. He also drove for Alfa Romeo in the European Touring Car Championship as a guest driver.
Guillermo "Memo" Rojas, Jr. (born August 18, 1981) is a Mexican professional race car driver. Successful in American sports car racing, Rojas is a two-time series champion in the Rolex Sports Car Series and a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona. He is the first Mexican driver to win a major American racing championship.
Rojas was born in 1981 in Mexico City, Mexico.
Rojas began his racing career in 1993, racing karts; in 1996 he moved up to professional racing in the Mexican Formula Two series. Heading to the United States in 1997, he joined the Barber Dodge series, before returning to Mexico in 1998 to race for two years in the national Formula Three series.
Returning to the United States in 2000, he spent two years racing in the American Formula Ford 2000 series, before moving up to the Barber Dodge Pro Series for the 2002 and 2003 seasons, claiming two wins during his time in the series, and finishing second in the series championship in 2003. He then graduated to the European Formula Renault series with DAMS Racing in 2004, scoring two top-five finishes over the course of the year. In 2005 he returned to the United States, racing in the Toyota Atlantic championship series for a single race at the Fundidora Park circuit in Monterrey.
Mark "Frosty" Winterbottom, (born 20 May 1981 in Sydney, Australia) is a racing driver who has competed in the V8 Supercar category since 2003. He currently drives for the Ford Performance Racing team. Mark is the son of the 1969 and 1974 Australian Sprintcar Champion and former chairman of the Sprintcar Control Council of Australia, Jim Winterbottom.
He started his motor racing career in 1989 at the age of 8, racing 50cc and 80cc motorbikes, and then moved on to go-karts at the age of 10. He would remain in karts until his early twenties, winning an astonishing 10 Australian Kart Championships and 25 State Karts Championships.
He moved up to the Australian Formula Ford Championship, for the 2002 season, and finished as the runner-up to fellow V8 Supercar racer Jamie Whincup, with five wins and two pole positions. He was given the Rookie of the Year title.
In 2003, Winterbottom moved up to the Konica V8 Supercar series and made an amazing impression with the Stone Brothers Racing team by winning the championship with five round victories and six pole positions. He also made his debut in the V8 Supercar series in the two endurance races at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 sharing on both occasions with Mark Noske. He impressed at Bathurst, running third until he retired at around three-quarter distance.
