Mala Sinha () (born 11 November 1936) is an Indian actress, who has worked in Hindi and Nepali films. Recognised for her acting talent and beauty, she went on to become a popular leading actress in Hindi films from the early fifties till 1977.

Early life

Sinha was born to Albert Sinha, in a Indian-Nepali Christian family in Kashmir in India. They named her Alda. Her friends at school used to tease her calling ''Dalda'' (a branded vegetable oil of India), so she changed her name to Mala.In her childhood she learnt dancing and singing. She has never done playback singing in films but has been a singer and has done stage shows and sung in many languages in period 1947-1975.

Career

Sinha started her film career as child artist in Bengali films ''Jai Vaishno Devi'' followed by ''Shri Krishan Leela'', ''Jog Biyog'' and ''Dhooli''. Noted Bengali film director Ardhendu Bose saw her acting in a school play and took permission from her father to cast her as a heroine in his film ''Roshanara'' (1952), her cinematic debut.

After acting in a couple of films in Calcutta, Mala had to go to Bombay to shoot for a Bengali film. There she met Geeta Bali, a noted Bollywood Actress, who was charmed by her and introduced her to film director Kidar Sharma. It was Sharma who cast her as a heroine in his film ''Rangeen Ratein''. However, her first Hindi film was ''Badshah'' opposite Pradeep Kumar, than came ''Ekadashi''; a mythological film. Both films failed, but her lead role in Kishore Sahu's ''Hamlet'', paired opposite Pradeep Kumar, fetched her rave reviews in spite of the film failing at the boxoffice.Films like ‘Lai Batti’ (ac­tor Balraj Sahni’s only directorial venture), ‘Nausherwan-E-Adil’ where she starred as the fair maiden Marcia in Sohrab Modi’s romance about forbidden love and ‘Phir Subah Hogi’, which was direc­tor Ramesh Saigal’s adapta­tion of Dosteovsky’s ‘Grime & Punishment’ established Mala Sinha’s reputation as a versatile actress who took the maximum career risks by accepting different unconventional roles

Mala was also a singer of some repute and used to sing for All India Radio, albeit she was never allowed to sing playback (even for herself) in the movies with the lone exception being 1972 film ''Lalkar''. In the fifties, she had string of hits opposite Pradeep Kumar like ''Fashion''(1957), ''Detective''(1958), ''Duniya Na Mane''(1959) though their first two ventures had failed.The films she did with Pradeep Kumar were men oriented films. In 1957, noted Bollywood actor and film director Guru Dutt (the husband of Geeta Dutt) cast Mala in his film ''Pyaasa''(1957) in a role originally intended for Madhubala. Mala gave a memorable performance as the woman who chooses to marry a rich man (played by character artiste Rehman) rather than a poor unsuccessful poet (played by Guru Dutt himself). The film was a dud at the box office upon its release but remains to this day a classic in the history of Indian cinema and a turning point for Sinha.

After ''Pyaasa'' her major success were Phir Subah Hogi(1958) and Yash Chopra's directorail debut ''Dhool Ka Phool'' (1959) that elevated her into a major dramatic star. There was no looking back for Sinha then as she was part of many successful male oriented movies from 1958 and early sixties like ''Parvarish''(1958), ''Ujala'', ''Main Nashe Main Hoon'', ''Duniya Na Mane'', ''Love Marriage''(1959), ''Bewaqoof ''(1960), ''Maya''(1961), ''Hariyali Aur Rasta'' and ''Dil Tera Deewana''(1962), ''Anpadh'',''Bombay Ka Chor''(1962).Critics believe her career best performance was in ''Bahurani''(1963), ''Gumrah'', ''Gehra Daag '', ''Apne Huye Paraye'' and ''Jahan Ara''. Apart from her pair with Pradeep Kumar, her pairing opposite Raaj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar ,Biswajit and Manoj Kumar in the woman oriented films were appreciated by audiences , with her films opposite Biswajit being the most popular. With Raaj Kumar, she gave box office hits like ''Phool Bane Angaare'', ''Maryada'' and ''Karmayogi'' and opposite Manoj Kumar, gave commercial successes like ''Hariyali Aur Rasta'', ''Apne Huye Paraye'' and ''Himalaya Ki God Mein''. The hit films with Rajendra Kumar were Devar Bhabhi, Dhool Ka Phool, Patang, Geet and Lalkar and with Biswajit, her popular movies include Aasra, Night in London, Do Kaliyaan, Tamanna, Nai Roshni and critically acclaimed films Pyar Ka Sapna, Paisa Ya Pyaar, Jaal and Phir Kab Milogi (1974 film). She did maximum films ie. 10 with Biswajit.In the year 2007, the screen awards gave The Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award to both Biswajit and Mala Sinha, by calling them on stage together giving due respect to the fact they were popular as a pair and have tasted box office success.The most remarkable feature of career of Mala Sinha was that most of her 1960s and 1970s hits were fuelled by her own star power as much as the heroes and most of the times her role was more powerful than the hero.

Though she was pitted opposite her seniors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Pradeep Kumar and also when she acted opposite the emerging stars from late 1950's like Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar, she made sure her role was minimum as good as theirs. The characters played by her stood out and gave her recognition for her performances. Mala Sinha did not mind working with newcomers as long as her role was worth. She worked with many newcomers of her era including Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Khan, Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan. In most of her films from the sixties, she got the first billing in the credits, even before the heroes, with exceptions being the films she acted with Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Pradeep Kumar and Kishore Kumar.

In 1966, Sinha went to Nepal to act in a Nepali film called ''Maitighar'' when the Nepali film industry was still in its infancy. Her hero in the film was an estate owner called Chidambar Prasad Lohani[C. P. Lohani]. Soon after, Mala Sinha married C. P. Lohani with the blessings of her parents. From the beginning theirs was a long-distance marriage with Lohani based in Kathmandu to look after his business and she living in Bombay with their daughter Pratibha. Mala continued acting in films after her marriage.

She has been a heroine in Nepali and Bengali films. In Bengali films she has acted with Uttam Kumar as well as Kishore Kumar. Her last Bengali film as a main female lead was ''Kabita''(1977) which featured Ranjit Mullick and Kamal Hassan was a super-hit at the box office. She is noted for her strong women oriented yet glamorous roles fuelled by her equal star power on par with the heroes in films like ''Dhool Ka Phool'', ''Suhag Sindoor'',''Anpadh'', ''Phir Subah Hogi'', ''Hariyali Aur Rasta'', ''Bahurani'', ''Aasra'', ''Do Kaliyaan'', ''Gumrah'', ''Aankhen'', ''Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi'', ''Himalaya Ki God Mein'', Do Kaliyaan, ''Holi Aayi Re'', Nai Roshni'', ''Mere Huzoor'' , ''Kangan'', ''Archana'' amongst others.

Of her rich and varied repertoire of films, she mentions she is rather partial to ''Jahan Ara''(1964), a historical that Meena Kumari passed on to her as she says:

From 1974,she cut down on her films assignments as the lead actresses. She accepted strong character roles in films like 36 Ghante(1974), Zindagi(1976), Karmayogi(1978), Be-Reham (1980), Harjaee(1981), Yeh Rishta Na Tootay, Babu (film) and Khel, which were popular films. In the early 90's Madhuri Dixit was promoted as new Mala Sinha in magazines.But after 1994, she completely withdrew herself from industry and has given very few public appearances. In ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ and B.R. Chopra’s ‘Gumrah’, she played the first unwed mother and adulterous wife respectively in Hindi Cinema. In Guru Dutt’s clas­sic ‘Pyaasa’, she played the relatively unsympa­thetic part of an ambitious woman who ditches her impoverished lover Guru Dutt for a loveless marriage with Rehman. As she grew older, she gracefully moved on to doing character roles that befitted her age. She was last seen in ''Zid'' (1994). Though Mala evinced as much interest in her daughter Pratibha's career as her father did in her career, she was unable to achieve the same success for her daughter.

Personal life

Sinha married her co star from Nepali Films, Chidambar Prasad Lohani in 1968. The couple met when they worked together in the Nepali film ''Maiti Ghar'' (1966). Lohani had an estate agency business. Post her marriage, she used to come and stay in Mumbai to shoot for films while her husband used to stay in Nepal running his business. She has one daughter from the marriage - Prathibha Sinha, who is a former Bollywood actress. From the late 1990s, the couple and their daughter have been residing in a bunglow in Bandra, Mumbai.

Shilpa Shirodkar (born 20 November 1969) is an Indian actress who enjoyed a period of popularity in the 1990s.

Personal Life

Shirodkar is the elder sister of actress and former Miss India Namrata Shirodkar. Shilpa and Namrata started their careers together, but Shilpa started with films and Namrata with modeling; and by the time Namarata became an actress, Shilpa had quit. Shilpa is granddaughter of the famous Marathi actress Meenakshi Shirodkar, who starred in the Marathi film ''Brahmachari'' (1930s), and was the first actress to wear a swimsuit, albeit to depict Lord Krishna bathing in the Yamuna river with his gopis.

Career

Shirodkar made her debut with the 1989 film ''Bhrashtachar'' in which she played the role of a blind girl. She then starred opposite Anil Kapoor in the super hit film ''Kishen Kanhaiya'' (1990), She had several other successful films such as ''Trinetra'' (1991), ''Hum'' (1991), ''Dil Hi To Hai'' (1992), ''Aankhen'' (1993), ''Pehchaan'' (1993), ''Gopi Kishan'' (1994), ''Bewafa Sanam'' (1995) and the critically acclaimed ''Mrityudand'' (1997). Her last film appearance was in the 2000 film ''Gaja Gamini''. She was praised for her performances in films like ''Mritiyudand'', ''Khuda Gawah'', ''Choti Bahu'' and ''Gopi Kishan''. She was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for ''Khuda Gawah''.

She tied the knot with Apresh Ranjit, a merchant banker from the UK on 11 July 2000 in Mumbai. She quit acting after marriage and settled down in London where her husband is employed with Barclays Bank. She gave birth to a daughter, Anushka, in 2003, and is now a home-maker.

Saif Ali Khan (, ; born 16 August 1970) is an Indian actor in Bollywood films. He is the son of the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and the actress Sharmila Tagore. He has two sisters; Saba Ali Khan and actress Soha Ali Khan. He is the heir apparent to both royal houses of Bhopal and Pataudi.

Khan made his debut in 1992 with ''Parampara''. He had his first major success with the 1994 films ''Main Khiladi Tu Anari'' and ''Yeh Dillagi''. After going through several years of decline in the 1990s, he rose into prominence with his performance in ''Dil Chahta Hai'' (2001), which marked his professional turning point. His performance in Nikhil Advani's ''Kal Ho Naa Ho'' (2003) won him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, and he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in ''Hum Tum'' (2004). He then had commercial success with films like ''Salaam Namaste'' (2005), ''Race'' (2008) and ''Love Aaj Kal'' (2009), and starred in critically acclaimed projects such as ''Parineeta'' (2005) and ''Omkara'' (2006). These accomplishments have established Khan as one of Bollywood's most successful and talented actors. In 2009, Khan branched out into film production with his company Illuminati Films.

Early life

Saif Ali Khan has Muslim Pashtun ancestry through Nawabs of Pataudi lineage from his father's side and Hindu Bengali Tagore ancestry from his mother's side. His paternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was the Nawab of Pataudi as well as an accomplished cricketer who played for England and then for India as the captain of the team. His paternal grandmother was Sajida Sultan, Begum of Bhopal and his great-uncle was Pakistani general Nawabzada Sher Ali Khan Pataudi. His father is Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the ninth Nawab of Pataudi and a former captain of the Indian cricket team.

Khan has two sisters Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan. Khan's mother is Sharmila Tagore, a Bengali Indian film actress and a member of Bengal's Tagore family. She is also the head of the Indian film censorship board and the grand-niece of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore converted to Islam from Hinduism after her marriage to Khan's father, and changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana. Khan spent his childhood in a Muslim atmosphere, reading the Quran, with his grandmother being the centre of his religious education. Khan says that "Religion played a major role in my upbringing." Khan also states that his family is "cool or rather massively open–minded about religious matters." For example, he acknowledges that his daughter is born into a Muslim family, however he states that he will not decide her religion for her.

Initially Khan studied at the Lawrence School Sanawar and later attended Lockers Park School in Hertfordshire. He followed in his father's footsteps by attending Winchester College, an independent school for boys in the UK. Khan can speak his native languages of Hindi and Bengali fluently, as well as English.

Career

In 1993, he won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for ''Aashiq Awara''. His breakthrough role came in 1994 with ''Yeh Dillagi'' starring opposite Kajol and Akshay Kumar which was his first major hit. Khan went on to star in many films but they failed at the box office. He only had success with multi-starrer hits like ''Main Khiladi Tu Anari'' (1994), ''Imtihaan'' (1995), ''Kachche Dhaage'' (1999) and ''Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United'' (1999). After some box office failures he had a hit with the film ''Kya Kehna'' (2000).

His acting career, more or less, went through a relative slump until 2001, when he was cast in Farhan Akhtar's contemporary drama ''Dil Chahta Hai''. He received much acclaim for his role as Sameer with critic Taran Adarsh calling it ''his career-best performance''. The success of this film firmly established Saif as one of the industry's most bankable stars.

He has since had many box office successes, starting with Nikhil Advani's drama ''Kal Ho Na Ho'' (2003), co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. The film, set in New York, starred Saif as Rohit, Zinta's best friend, who later realises that he loves her. The film was the second top-grossing film of the year, and Khan's performance was praised by critics. He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, as well as other awards in that category in other award ceremonies. Khan followed it with the leading role in Kunal Kohli's romantic comedy ''Hum Tum'' (2004), his first collaboration with Yash Raj Films. The film follows the encounters of the two main characters until they, after several years and various meetings, become friends and finally fall in love. Khan played the role of Karan Kapoor, a young cartoonist and womaniser whose relationship with Rhea Prakash, played by Rani Mukerji, changes his perception of women and life. Khan's performance was applauded by both critics and audiences. He won the Best Comedian award at the Filmfare, and was conferred the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor in 2005. Khan's next project with the Yash Raj Films production, ''Salaam Namaste'' (2005), became India's top-grossing film in the overseas market. The film, which was the first Indian film to be entirely shot in Australia, starred Khan and Preity Zinta as a contemporary cohabiting Indian couple. He was also noted for his performance in a negative role in Ram Gopal Verma's ''Ek Hasina Thi'' (2004) and for his role of Shekhar Rai in Pradeep Sarkar's ''Parineeta'' (2005), an adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novella, Parineeta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

In 2006 Khan played the protagonist in the English-language art film, ''Being Cyrus''. His role as Cyrus got him positive reviews. In that same year, he went on to receive major acclaim for his portrayal of Iago in the Indian adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, ''Omkara''. Rediff.com stated, "Omkara marks Saif's emergence into the very forefront of his acting peers, and we gleefully applaud". ''Variety'' film critic Derek Elley called his performance "powerhouse" and further wrote, "It's Khan's movie through and through, in a performance of rugged, contained malevolence which trades on his previous screen persona as a likable best friend as well as his stint as the manipulative outsider in 'Being Cyrus'. It's smart casting, superbly realized." For his work, Khan earned the awards for Best Actor in a negative role at the Star Screen, Filmfare, Zee Cine and IIFA Awards.

Khan next acted in ''Eklavya: The Royal Guard'' (2007), co-starring alongside his mother for the second time since ''Aashiq Awara'' (1993). The film was India's official entry to the Oscars, and Khan's performance as Harshwardhan was appreciated by critics. Taran Adarsh commented, "watching him emote with amazing precision makes you realise the giant strides he has taken as an actor". He next appeared alongside Rani Mukerji in the family drama, ''Ta Ra Rum Pum'' (2007). Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film went on to become a box office success.

In 2008, Khan first starred in the Abbas-Mustan thriller ''Race'', which went on to do well at the box office. This was followed by two projects produced by Yash Raj Films, ''Tashan'' and ''Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic'', both of which were not successful.

In 2009, Khan produced and starred in ''Love Aaj Kal''. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was a critical and commercial success. He then starred in the thriller ''Kurbaan'' along with Kareena Kapoor in which he played a terrorist. The following year, Khan was awarded the Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian award given by the Government of India

Khan turned producer when he setup his production company called Illuminati Films in 2009. His first film, ''Love Aaj Kal'' was directed by Imtiaz Ali and featured Deepika Padukone opposite him. Upon release, the film was critically and commercially successful. Khan's second film production, ''Agent Vinod'', will be directed by Sriram Raghavan.

Personal life

Khan married actress Amrita Singh in October 1991. After thirteen years of marriage and two children (son Ibrahim Ali Khan and daughter Sara Ali Khan), the couple divorced in 2004. His children live with their mother. Khan is currently dating actress Kareena Kapoor.

In 1998, Khan was charged with poaching two blackbucks in Kankani during the filming of ''Hum Saath Saath Hain'' along with co-stars Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam. The charges were dropped soon after Khan was acquitted.

On 18 February 2007, Khan was hospitalised at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai due to experiencing chest pain while rehearsing for his performance at the Stardust Awards, to be held that night. After hospitalization, he stated he would quit smoking.

In October 2009 Khan publicly spoke of his relationship with Kareena Kapoor and the prospect of marriage stating, that in his opinion people said that marriage does not affect one's career but in fact it does and that today the whole definition of marriage has changed. He said, that he and Kareena were so well connected, so close that marriage is just a stamp of validation for the society.

Commitments

In 2005, along with other Bollywood stars, Khan performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

Khan took part in two major world tours. He was part of a troupe that included Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra, which went on the ''Temptations 2004'' world tour.

In 2006, Khan toured again, participating and performing in ''Heat 2006'' concert around the world, along with Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Celina Jaitley.

In 2006, Khan appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture along with Rani Mukerji, and Aishwarya Rai on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Delhi.

Udit Narayan Jha, popularly known as Udit Narayan () is a playback singer in commercial Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Oriya, Assamese, Maithili and Bengali language cinema. Narayan has sung in 26 different languages. He has won three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Career

Udit Narayan Jha has stated that he was born in 1955 in a village called Bhardaha in the Saptari district , Nepal. His father was Hare Krishna Jha and his mother was Bhuwaneshwari Devi.

Narayan studied at P.B. School, Rajbiraj, where he passed his S.L.C.( class 10) and later obtained his intermediate from Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, mostly know as RR campus (Kathmandu).

Udit Narayan began his career in Nepal singing for Radio Nepal as a staff artiste for Maithili and Nepali folk songs. He sang many popular nepali folk, modern songs in Radio Nepal. His first filmy playback singing was for Nepali film Sindur.It was a comedy song for famous nepali comedians (Late) GopalRaj Mainali (Chankhe) and Basundhara Bhushal (Nakkali). It was a duet song with Sushmaa Shrestha now known as Poornima in Hindi film Industry.

After eight years in that role, Indian Embassy offered him the chance to study classical music at a prestigious school in Bombay, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan on a music scholarship. He moved to Bombay in 1978.

He got his first break in 1980, when noted music director (composer) Rajesh Roshan asked him to playback for the Hindi film ''Unees Bees'', and was given the opportunity to sing with the veteran Mohammed Rafi. He later provided playback, along with another veteran Lata Mangeshkar for the 1983 hit, Bade Dil Wala for the song, Jeevan Ke Din. After several years of singing unnoticed songs for Hindi films in 1986 he sang the song "Krishna Krishna" for the film ''Tan Badan'' for the composers Anand-Milind. The actual success story of his career began in 1988 when Anand-Milind gave him the oppportunity to sing all the songs for the successful Bollywood movie ''Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'', earning him a Filmfare Award. The film also brought actor Aamir Khan, actress Juhi Chawla and playback singer Alka Yagnik to stardom. After the success of ''Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'', he became one of the leading playback singers in the Indian film industry.

He has worked with musicians like Rahul Dev Burman, A. R. Rahman, Anand-Milind, Jagjit Singh, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Bhardwaj, Nadeem-Shravan, Rajesh Roshan, Shankar Mahadevan, Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam Chakraborty, Vishal-Shekhar, and directors like Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowariker and Karan Johar. Some of those films include Lagaan, Darr, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Swades, and Veer Zaara. Narayan has been hailed as the screen voice of Aamir Khan. He has also sung hit songs for actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar and young Shahid Kapoor. He credits his own success in part to being able to sing for the top actors.

At the same time, he sang in Nepalese movies, and also acted in two Nepali films ''Kusume Rumal'' and ''Pirati''. He has worked in Nepalese films as well, in particular for composer Shambhujeet Baskota. During his early singing career, he performed songs composed by Shiva Shankar, Natikaji and Gopal Yonjan. In 2004, he released his first private Nepalese album, ''Upahaar'', in which he also sang duets with his wife Deepa Jha. At the Hits FM Awards in 2004 he won awards in two major categories for the album, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Some of Narayan's other private albums are ''Bhajan Sangam'', ''Bhajan Vatika'', ''I love You'', ''Dil Deewana'', ''Yeh Dosti'', ''Love is Life'', ''Jhumka de Jhumka'', ''Sona No Ghadulo'', ''Dhuli Ganga'', and ''Ma Tarini''.

He was in the panel of judges of Indian Idol 3 along with music composer Anu Malik and female playback singer Alisha Chinai on Sony TV.

He was in the panel of judges on Sony TV for ''Waar Pariwaar'', a reality show based on the bringing together of a singing gharana (family of singers). He shared judging duties with fellow playback singer Kumar Sanu and Jatin Pandit of the famous music duo Jatin-Lalit.

Narayan has performed in many stage shows in India and abroad and is the recipient of a large number of awards. These include Screen Videocon Award, MTV Best Video Award and Pride of India Gold Award.

In 2009, Narayan was considering running as a candidate for the Padma Shri. In 2010, Udit Narayan with Madhushree sang for the English independent film "When Harry Tries to Marry"

Personal life

Narayan is now a resident of Mumbai. He is married and has one son. His second wife Deepa Narayan, whom he married in 1985, is a singer, and the two recorded an album together titled ''Dil Deewana''.

His son Aditya Narayan started his singing for child artists in Nepali film with his father before starting his singing career in Hindi movies in the 1990s.
