Aristophanes (c. 446 BCE -- c. 386 BCE), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. Aristophanes (c. 446 BCE -- c. 386 BCE), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. In my opinion, he says through the Chorus in that play, the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all.
Less is known about Aristophanes than about his plays. In fact, his plays are the main source of information about him. It was conventional in Old Comedy for the Chorus to speak on behalf of the author during an address called the 'parabasis' and thus some biographical facts can be got 'straight from the horse's mouth', so to speak. However, these facts relate almost entirely to his career as a dramatist and the plays contain few clear and unambiguous clues about his personal beliefs or his private life. He was a comic poet in an age when it was conventional for a poet to assume the role of 'teacher' (didaskalos), and though this specifically referred to his training of the Chorus in rehearsal, it also covered his relationship with the audience as a commentator on significant issues. Aristophanes claimed to be writing for a clever and discerning audience, yet he also declared that 'other times' would judge the audience according to its reception of his plays. He sometimes boasts of his originality as a dramatist yet his plays consistently espouse opposition to radical new influences in Athenian society. He caricatured leading figures in the arts (notably Euripides, whose influence on his own work however he once begrudgingly acknowledged), in politics (especially the populist Cleon), and in philosophy/religion (where Socrates was the most obvious target). Such caricatures seem to imply that Aristophanes was an old-fashioned conservative, yet that view of him leads to contradictions.

Will argues that reception begins in antiquity. It is a methodological approach that helps us to destabilise a simple, singular model of the classics. His case study is Plutarch's reception of Aristophanes. It is a significant point in the history of the reception of the master of Old Comedy. Will talks to us about the long shadow that Plutarch's criticism has cast over the reception of Aristophanes. For many teachers of ancient Greek, both ancient and modern, the comedian is a pedagogical tool for teaching Attic Greek. Plutarch, however, criticised Aristophanes for his chaotic language because it did not fit in with his educational and philosophical approach to life. Aristophanes' reality was not to Plutarch's taste.
This case study of one ancient author's negative reception of an older master demonstrates how classical texts can fall out of favour, sometimes for reasons other than those later generations objected to. Will mentions his work on the reception of another controversial classical figure, Epicurus. Together with Brooke Holmes, he co-edited Dynamic Reading: Studies in the Reception of Epicureanism (Classical Presences Series, OUP: 2012

Devin Stauffer is Associate Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, and is the author of Plato's Introduction to the Question of Justice (2001), and The Unity of Plato's Gorgias: Rhetoric, Justice, and the Philosophic Life (2006). About PCG at Harvard The Program on Constitutional Government is associated with the Center for American Political Studies in the Department of Government at Harvard University. It was founded in 1985 by Harvey Mansfield and William Kristol, and guided since then by Mansfield and R. Shep Melnick of Boston College. The Program promotes the study of the U.S. Constitution and its principles, combining the fields of political theory and American government. For www.classicsconfidential.co.uk In the second interview recorded at the annual meeting of the American Comparative Literature Association in New York City (20-23 March 2014 http://complit.as.nyu.edu/object/complit.newsevent.ACLA) CC's Anastasia Bakogianni talks with Will Shearin of the University of Miami (http://www.as.miami.edu/classics/people/) about the reception of the comic playwright Aristophanes during the Second Sophistic period. Will argues that reception begins in antiquity. It is a methodological approach that helps us to destabilise a simple, singular model of the classics. His case study is Plutarch's reception of Aristophanes. It is a significant point in the history of the reception of the master of Old Comedy. Will talks to us about the long shadow that Plutarch's criticism has cast over the reception of Aristophanes. For many teachers of ancient Greek, both ancient and modern, the comedian is a pedagogical tool for teaching Attic Greek. Plutarch, however, criticised Aristophanes for his chaotic language because it did not fit in with his educational and philosophical approach to life. Aristophanes' reality was not to Plutarch's taste. This case study of one ancient author's negative reception of an older master demonstrates how classical texts can fall out of favour, sometimes for reasons other than those later generations objected to. Will mentions his work on the reception of another controversial classical figure, Epicurus. Together with Brooke Holmes, he co-edited Dynamic Reading: Studies in the Reception of Epicureanism (Classical Presences Series, OUP: 2012 http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199794959.do). Will's work on Plutarch's reception of Aristophanes will be published as chapter in Brill's Companion to the Reception of Aristophanes (forthcoming in 2016) edited by Philip Walsh. I like the idea of taking a "foodcation". In fact, almost every trip I take is a foodcation of some sort ... Aristophanes (English pronunciation: /ˌærɨˈstɒfəniːz/; Ancient Greek: [aristopʰánɛːs]; Ἀριστοφάνης, ca. 446 BC – ca. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his 40 plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are in fact used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander contributing to the trial and execution of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." (κωμῳδοδιδασκαλίαν εἶναι χαλεπώτατον ἔργον ἁπάντων)
