Let′s shift our attention now to the global headlines we′re following this hour. We′ll connect to our Eunice Kim, standing for us at the NewsCenter for us. Eunice... The mass demonstrations in Hong Kong continue, and with today marking China′s National Day,... we are expecting these protests to get even larger as the day progresses? That′s right, Jinjoo. Protest leaders are hoping for record crowds to come out... as the city is also set to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the founding of Communist China. Kim Min-ji has the details. Pro-democracy demonstrations are expected to swell in number on Wednesday,... with the start of the National Day, which marks the founding of communist China in 1949. Tens of thousands of people braved heavy rain and thunder overnight,... to continue what has been dubbed the "Umbrella Revolution" an act of civil disobedience that authorities have called "illegal." Hong Kong′s chief executive also rejected calls by student leaders to address the crowd,... which he said must be immediately dismantled. "The central government won′t be swayed by illegal activities. This illegal protest will not force the central government to go back on its decision on August 31st." Protesters are demanding two things. They want Leung to step down as chief executive,... and they want universal suffrage in Hong Kong′s 2017 elections,... with Beijing abandoning plans to vet candidates for the post of chief executive. If their demands aren′t met,... they are considering expanding their occupation of government facilities, buildings and public roads. "What I really feel is, I think that Hong Kong people are so angry and so frustrated. Because I can say Hong Kong people are quite indifferent to politics. But why they come out to occupy the main road here? Simply because the Hong Kong government never hears us, never listens to us. That′s why we come out." Some have voiced concerns that the protests could become a second Tiananmen Square. "Beijing has a final say in everything in Hong Kong and Beijing has a record of crackdown on peaceful demonstrations with violence, not only happened in Beijing, but also happening in Tibet, Xinjiang and other places of China, so given China′s record, we have no trust at all. And I think the worst thing that could happen is a second Tiananmen massacre." The large-scale demonstrations began over the weekend,... and the crowds are now expected to swarm the central districts of the financial hub,... near where National Day celebrations are scheduled to take place. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

Pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong have erected blockades in the centre of the city's finance district as they begin a planned sit-in despite police raining tear-gas grenades down on them.Gas: Officers used tear gas to break up the protest for the first time in Hong Kong since 2005, though officers denied rumours they had also fired rubber bullets The protests later spread to the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay and across the harbour to Mong Kok, posing a greater challenge for authorities to contain, local media reported. Occupy Central, a pro-democracy group pushing for genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong, on Sunday launched a long-anticipated civil disobedience campaign aimed at sending a strong protest message to the central government in Beijing. High quality global journalism requires investment. A week of protests escalated into violence when student-led demonstrators broke through a cordon late on Friday and scaled a fence to invade the city's main government compound after a week of peaceful action. Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. The Hong Kong Federation of Students extended class boycotts indefinitely. The group brought forward the start of the “banquet” – code name for the protest – from Wednesday to join forces with thousands of students who since Friday have been engaged in a stand-off with police around the Hong Kong government offices in the Admiralty district. Chan Kin-man, one of the founders of Occupy Central, said he expected police to try to remove the protesters later on Sunday. But Beijing last month rejected demands for people to freely choose the city's next leader, prompting threats from activists to shut down Central. China wants to limit elections to a handful of candidates loyal to Beijing. Organizers said as many as 80,000 people thronged the streets in Admiralty, galvanized by the arrests of student activists on Friday. No independent estimate of the crowd numbers was available but the action is being seen as the most tenacious civil disobedience action since 1997. Over 100 pro-democracy students stormed Hong Kong government headquarters and scuffled with police late on Friday in protest against the Chinese government's tightening grip on the former British colony. Demonstrators also have occupied the upscale Pacific Place shopping mall, located near the main protest site, organizers said Sunday evening. They said the number of protesters continues to grow. The pro-democracy advocacy group -- which is not affiliated with the broader anti-capitalist Occupy movement -- has been vowing to lead a campaign of civil disobedience in the face of China's decision to control what candidates can run for Hong Kong's top office. Many in the city, which under British rule enjoyed considerable political freedom, fear a rollback of the city's political autonomy, agreed between Britain and China under the Basic Law. The Basic Law, which serves as a de facto constitution, was written in the lead-up to the 1997 handover of sovereignty. The sit-in is to protest against China's plan to vet nominees for the leadership of the former British colony, dashing hopes for full universal suffrage at 2017 polls. The goal is to maintain calm during demonstrations, as the 'sunflower' movement did in Taipei, which forced the Taiwan government to back down on a trade pact with Beijing. The behaviour of pro-Beijing officials is eliciting growing disdain. They are "resorting to red-guard tactics to resist change".

Australian fighter jets are to join the international coalition striking back against the Islamic State militant group in Iraq.

Prime Minister Tony Abbot says the involvement of its air force will help protect the Iraqi people ? and ultimately Australians ? from what he described as a ?death cult?.

?I want to stress that only Iraq can defeat ISIL (Islamic State),? said Abbott. ?But Iraq shouldn?t be alone and as far as Australia and our allies are concerned, Iraq won?t be alone. I have to warn that this deployment to Iraq could be quite lengthy. Certainly months rather than weeks.?

Six== Super Hornet fighters ==, recently deployed to the United Arab Emirates, will take part in airstrikes. Two other Australian air force planes joined surveillance operations over Iraq on Wednesday.

Australia joins Turkey, who?s parliament approved its involvement in the fight back against ISIL on Thursday. Ankara will also allow foreign coalition forces to launch military operation from its territory.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it would do everything possible to prevent Kobani, a Syrian town which borders Turkey, falling to extremists.

The group calling itself Islamic State or ISIL has captured about a third of Iraq and Syria in recent months as it seeks to create its own caliphate.

OCCUPY CENTRAL HONG KONG - Tear Gas, Riot Police and Chaos on the Streets of Hong Kong

activist financial district. a sit-in despite threats by the authorities to use tougher force. Pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong have erected blockades in the centre of the city\'s finance district as they begin a planned sit-in despite police raining tear-gas grenades down on them.Gas: Officers used tear gas to break up the protest for the first time in Hong Kong since 2005, though officers denied rumours they had also fired rubber bullets The protests later spread to the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay and across the harbour to Mong Kok, posing a greater challenge for authorities to contain, local media reported.

Occupy Central, a pro-democracy group pushing for genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong, on Sunday launched a long-anticipated civil disobedience campaign aimed at sending a strong protest message to the central government in Beijing. High quality global journalism requires investment. A week of protests escalated into violence when student-led demonstrators broke through a cordon late on Friday and scaled a fence to invade the city\'s main government compound after a week of peaceful action.

But Beijing last month rejected demands for people to freely choose the city\'s next leader, prompting threats from activists to shut down Central. \
