ARNO BABAJANIAN - ALEXANDER ARUTUNIAN - ARMENIAN RHAPSODY
Babajanian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. By age 5, his extraordinary musical talent was clearly apparent, and the composer Aram Khachaturian suggested that the boy be given proper music training. Two years later, in 1928 at the age of 7, Babajanian entered the Yerevan State Musical Conservatory. In 1938, he continued his studies in Moscow with Vissarion Shebalin. He later returned to Yerevan, where from 1950--1956 he taught at the Yerevan State conservatory. It was during this period that he wrote the Piano Trio in f# sharp minor. It received immediate acclaim and was regarded as a masterpiece from the time of its premiere. Subsequently, he undertook concert tours throughout the Soviet Union and Europe. In 1971, he was named a People's Artist of the Soviet Union. As a composer, Babajanian was active in most genres and even wrote many popular songs in collaboration with the leading poets such as Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Robert Rozhdestvensky among others. Much of Babajanian's music is rooted in Armenian folk music and folklore. But generally, the way in which he uses Armenian folk music is in the virtuosic style of Rachmaninov and Khachaturian. His later works were influenced by Prokofiev and Bartók. Praised by Dmitri Shostakovich as a "brilliant piano teacher", Babajanian was also a noted pianist and often performed his own works in concerts. He received the Stalin Prize of 1950 for his Heroic Ballade for piano with orchestra and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He was People's Artist of the Armenian SSR (1956) and Soviet Union (1971). He was a laureate of two Stalin State Prizes of the USSR (1951, 1953) and two Armenian SSR State Prizes (1967, 1983). This song is called Լուսնյակը ցոլաց/ Lusnyake Tsolats` Armenian folk song interpreted by Arno and Alexander. ԶԱՐԹԻՐ ԼԱՈ (Zartir Lao/Wake up my Son) - Patriotic Armenian Song
ԶԱՐԹԻՐ ԼԱՈ (Zartir Lao/Wake up my Son) - Patriotic Armenian Song
Published in the 1890s it was created to rally on Armenians in the Ottoman empire to not take persecution from the Turks anymore. The Turkish football club Fenerbahce stole this melody, and uses it as their melody. Zartir lao" was originally created as "Freedom Fighters song". It was similar form as traditional Armenian lullabies, but with an inverse purpose of waking the son up for a fight. Mother is the central character. She tells her son about the miserable conditions of Armenians and calls him for a military struggle against the Turks. The mother points out as an example for her son to enlist as a fedayee for the liberation of homeland. Song's mood is revealed with the doublet line «զարթիր լաօ, մեռնիմ քեզի» ("wake up my dear son, I'll die for you"), which is a call for struggle to all Armenians. Which was among the first divisions to be sent into the deadly frontlines of the battle of Berlin, after the victory in Berlin, the Armenians of the 89th division famously danced Kochari (Armenian war dance) under the Brandenburg Gate. One hundred and nineteen Armenians were awarded with the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union. Armenians living in the areas occupied regions of the Soviet Union formed partisan groups to combat the Germans. Over sixty Armenians were promoted to the rank of general, and with an additional four eventually achieving the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union: Hovhannes Bagramyan (the first non-Slavic commander to hold the position of front commander when he was assigned to be the commander of the First Baltic Front in 1943), Admiral Ivan Isakov, Hamazasp Babadzhanian, and Sergei Khudyakov. Armenian SSR provided weapons and rebuilt broken airplanes. Workers donated to the Defense Fund 216,000,000 rubles. Armenian SSR, as a gift, sent to the front 45 wagons of provisions.
