Year 1958 (MCMLVIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday (link will display the full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar.
Lev Abramovich Polugaevsky (Russian: Лев Абрамович Полугаевский) (20 November 1934 – 30 August 1995) was an International Grandmaster of chess and frequent contender for the world chess championship, although he never achieved that title. He was one of the strongest players in the world from the late 1960s until the early 1980s, as well as a distinguished author and opening theorist whose contributions in this field remain important to the present day.
Lev Polugaevsky was born in Mogilev in the Soviet Union (now Mahilyow, Belarus). Unlike many of his grandmaster colleagues, his development in chess came slowly, and he did not receive even the Soviet master title until he was an adult. His progress then accelerated rapidly, however, and by the late 1960s he was one of the world's strongest players, as was recognized by his participation in the famous "USSR vs. Rest of the World" match of 1970. In this match he occupied fourth board, losing one game to Vlastimil Hort and drawing his other three. Polugaevsky won at Mar del Plata in 1962 and 1971. He won or tied in the USSR Chess Championship three times. He played regularly in qualifying events to select a challenger for the world championship, qualifying for Candidates matches on four occasions. His greatest advancement toward the title came during the 1977 and 1980 cycles, when he defeated Henrique Mecking and former world champion Mikhail Tal, respectively, in quarterfinal Candidates matches, before succumbing both times in the semifinals to the eventual challenger, Viktor Korchnoi.
Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov (Russian: Рашид Гибятович Нежметдинов; Tatar Cyrillic: Рәшит Һибәт улы Нәҗметдинов, Latin: Räşit Hibät ulı Näcmetdinov, [ræˈʃit næʑmetˈdinəf]; December 15, 1912 – June 3, 1974) was an eminent Soviet chess player, chess writer, and Checkers player.
Nezhmetdinov was born in Aktubinsk, Russian Empire, in what is now Aktobe, Kazakhstan, of Tatar ethnicity. His parents died when he was very young, leaving him and two other siblings to be raised by their brother. The orphaned, impoverished family moved to Kazan, Tatar ASSR.
Nezhmetdinov had a natural talent for both chess and checkers. He learned chess by watching others play at a chess club, whereupon he challenged one of the players, won, and then challenged another player, winning that game as well. At 15, he played in Kazan's Tournament of Pioneers, winning all 15 games. He also learned to play checkers at this time. During the same month in which he learned the game, he won Kazan's checkers semi-final and placed second in the finals. In the same year, he placed sixth in the Russian Checkers Championship. He later won the Russian Checkers Championship at least once. Later, however, he gave up checkers for chess.
Thomas (Tom) Dissevelt (4 March 1921, Leiden - 1989) was a Dutch composer and musician. He is known as a pioneer in the merging of electronic music and jazz. He married Rina Reys, sister of Rita Reys in 1946.
Tom Dissevelt was also known as bassist / arranger in the Skymasters and on the boards of Rita Reijs.
Between 1939 and 1944 Dissevelt studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He took over three years in trombone lessons and then went onto study clarinet, music theory and piano. He stopped studying the clarinet because he was too busy and took bass lessons from Herman Stotijn of the Residence Orchestra.
After the war Dissevelt moved to Indonesia with the Jos Cleber Orchestra to work. He was in love with Rina Reys, and married her in 1946. In 1947 he did an international tour with Ilcken Wessel, the husband of Rita Reys, and the orchestra of Piet van Dijk. This tour lasted three years, where she acted in Spain and North Africa.
In 1955 Bep Rowold, leader of the Skymasters, hired Dissevelt as a bassist and arranger. He became interested in 12-tone music, listened to the many German radio stations, and heard works by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Anton Webern. Recommended by Philips, he was invited to the Natlab studios electronic music. Together with Dick Raaijmakers (alias "Kid Baltan") he composed electronic music. Many of his compositions are now heard on the record "Popular Electronics - Early Dutch electronic music from Philips Research Laboratories, 1956-1963".
William Franklin "Billy" Graham, Jr. (born November 7, 1918) is an American evangelical Christian evangelist, ordained as a Southern Baptist minister, who rose to celebrity status with national media backing of William Randolph Hearst and Henry Luce in 1949. His sermons were broadcast on radio and television, with some still re-broadcast today.
Graham is notable for having been a spiritual adviser to several United States Presidents; he was particularly close to Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon. During the civil rights movement, he began to support integrated seating for his revivals and crusades; in 1957 he invited Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to jointly preach at a huge revival in New York City, where they appeared together at Madison Square Garden, and bailed the minister out of jail in the 1960s when he was arrested in demonstrations.
Having built an evangelical empire and organized huge events worldwide, Graham has personally preached the Gospel to more people than any other person in history. His institutions include a variety of media and publishing outlets. According to his staff, more than 3.2 million people have responded to the invitation at Billy Graham Crusades to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. As of 2008, Graham's estimated lifetime audience, including radio and television broadcasts, topped 2.2 billion.
And shepherds we shall be,
for thee my lord for thee.
Power hath descended forth from thy hand,
that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command.
So we shall flow river forth to thee,
and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In nomine patris,
et filli,
et spiritus sancti.
You've sunk lower than I've ever seen,
and even though you deserved this
I tried to catch your fall
I've grown so tired of your childish threats
Know that I'll never run from anything
And I'll burn the building if I knew you'd die
And I'll pray you're a failure
And that you won't make it out alive
[x2]
Here's where we prove all your fairytales wrong
This all stops tonight
Swim in your sea of smoke
Until your lungs lose the fight
It's over
This all stops tonight
Or prove me wrong
What have you become trough your jealousy?
You've threatened my life, my friends and family
This is your last wrong turn in your life
and this dead end leads to a blood bath
your blood bath
And I'll burn the building if I knew you'd die
And I'll pray you're a failure
And that you won't make it out alive
[x2]
Here's where we prove all your fairytales wrong
This all stops tonight
Swim in your sea of smoke
Until your lungs lose the fight
It's over
This all stops tonight
Or prove me wrong
You'll never stop us with your one-man army
We would burn him alive
You'll never stop us with your one-man army
If you're such a man then bring the fight
[x2]
This is me calling you out
You want to talk like a man, then be a man
Stop talking like you're something (We're paging 1958)
You always have so much to say but it's never to our faces
I'm right here
(We're paging 1958)
We're all one and the same
We're moving on, and living our dreams (We're paging 1958)
We're all one and the same
