Make a Dovetail Joint with Hand Tools - Fully Explained!
Make a Dovetail Joint with Hand Tools - Fully Explained!
How to make a dovetail joint with hand tools, in this video I'll show how with a saw, chisel and just a few common tools you can be well on your way to cutting dovetails by hand for all your woodworking projects. The video is about 17 minutes long in goes in depth explaining how to make this joint. I'll show you multiple ways to get the same results, perfect for those with limited tools and workspace. With only a couple tools and a work surface you can join me in cutting dovetails by hand. Here's the steps. 1. Get some wood, mine was 2.5 inches wide and ¾ inches thick. 2. Mark your base line of your tails in pins with the adjoining board and repeat for the second board. You can also use a marking gauge if you have one. I'll demonstrate both. 3. Decide your spacing and number of dovetails. I chose three ½ inch tails with ¼ spacing. Using a ruler and a square make marks at your spacing on the end of your tails board. 4. Use a protractor, t bevel or dovetail angle gauge to draw a line from the spacing marks down to the base line. Around 10 degrees will work, but feel free to experiment. 5. Now saw on the outside of these lines to remove the excess. Saw off the two outside pieces and remove the remaining wood with a chisel cutting and chipping it out as you go. 6. Now place your tails board on the end of your pin board and trace out the angles. Use a square to connect these lines to the base line. Saw and chisel out the excess. 7. Once your done sawing and chiseling, see if your joint fits together, if not, chisel off wood slowly where needed until you obtain a nice fit. 8. Apply glue to the mating surfaces and assemble joint checking it's squareness. 9. Once the glue is dry, give it a sanding and apply your favorite finish to see the joint come alive! Thanks for taking the time to watch, I really hope you are able to pick up some tips in this video. Check back for more hand cut joinery in the future. The classic dovetail joint used to secure the front of a drawer to the sides is sometimes called a 'Lapped Dovetail', or a 'Half-blind Dovetail' -- you can see it from the side when the drawer is pulled open, but with the drawer closed it is completely hidden. This video shows you how to make this fine woodworking joint from start to finish with a hand-saw and chisels. Furniture makers plane the sides of handmade drawers thin so as to keep weight and friction down. This also keeps the dovetails thin but as they are in tension the joint is more than strong enough - in fact antique dovetail joints survive centuries of heavy use long after other fixings would have failed. The front of a medium or large hand-made drawer is often twice as thick as the sides to prevent bowing when you push and pull. This thickness also provides room for a longer, stronger, dovetail joint. A spot of glue is applied to the finished joint in a drawer to prevent it working loose.- published: 11 Dec 2013
