A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way. A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.
The specific nature of the behavior associated with a fad can be of any type including language usage, apparel, financial investment, and even food. Apart from general novelty, fads may be driven by mass media programming, emotional excitement, peer pressure, or even a desire to be outside social norms (counterculture).
Though the term trend may be used interchangeably with fad, a fad is generally considered a fleeting behavior whereas a trend is considered to be a behavior that evolves into a relatively permanent change.
1950s, the beatnik movement became a major fad that died out as its original proponents abandoned the movement. Though this fad, in and of itself, was short-lived, it is credited with giving birth to the hippie movement in the following decade, and with inspiring other social trends in the decades that followed.

A so-called "cultured suburban male"
Sick & tired of his home and chasing tail
Say to himself "I need a plan to be a man"
"I've got to start a band, buy a van & travel the land"
Life is a vice, who wants a wife?
Because that's what they say should be normal
Stay in one place, it's too small of a space
You'll go crazy, when you do don't say I didn't warm you
Familiar faces in different places
we've got family with no relations
This is our life don't call it a trend
The best criticisms comes from our closest friends
I feel at home when I'm out on the road
With my ugly green suitcase filled with smelly clothes
Counting the days till' the next tour's away
Is that what you'd call normal?
The lights, the stage, the love & the hate
I've seen the problems on the horizon
Those times are tough, they're always trying
to seek out the flows and & isolate
When you're backed in the corner, you begin to hate
You're always behind us & we're behind you
The one who found us, the one who could play
The one I'll always choose
We'll have to work awhile on this one
Those times are tough, they can't always be fun
Look past the flaws, the drugs & booze
This will always be your corner when I choose
Now by the words of Joe Strummer
April '07, Ohio
Three days in. only a week to go
Searching for a meaning
As to why you left Cleveland
When you ditched us, then you
Hopped a bus & headed for home
Keep it bottled up
It will make you go nuts
Cigarette pint of stout
Drink it in smoke it out
Don't give up on your vision
For one thats impaired
When the world's got you down
Take a breath of fresh air
I've got no bad intentions
And I've got no remorse
Something burns deep within me
And that's my driving force
When you look back on this day
And you ask yourself "Why?"
You'll still be here tomorrow
If we don't fill up the car, we won't go very far
When they get sick of the shocks,
where do the kids go?
To college, work, or the military
I hear the mid-eat is real nice in February
Round up all the confused girls & boys
Make em' choose before they find their own voice
What else you gonna do but let your country make use of you?
Oil spills (Why can't you see?)
It also kills (Kills you & me!)
Corrupts the world (Corrupts the world!)
Provokes the war
Fuck the rent, upon our dreams it will be spent
we've got one shot, we don't intend to lose
Apparently we're businessmen
Forced to go against good friends
Imagine the lives of mine & 4 other guys
All shacked up in a van
Every day another way we can't
I think it's because they say they've all grown up
As if I never have
They don't like the way we choose to live
And rag on our creepy fans
Hey! Do you remember?
HEY MAN COULD YOU SIGN THIS
I'D REALLY LIKE TO PUT YOUR PICTURE ON MY WALL
I'M GLAD YOUR HERE CAUSE' YOU REMIND ME
YOU FILL ME UP WHEN I HAVE NO HOPE LEFT AT ALL
I know some fool who collects records
Only now he smokes pot
He traded in his straight-edge
For angular art rock
HEY! You're the pretender
I was one of you, and now I'm just in front of you
I'm still one of you, but now I'm just in front of you
Yeah I've still got my Two-Tone, Decendents, Minutemen
NOFX, Big D, Coquettesh, Elvis Costello, The Specials
Tell me what's worse: The box or the bomb?
Tell me what keeps you up all night long?
Headlines hypnotize like deer caught in headlights
Pushing the issues way out of sight
Their hooks get caught deep in your eyes
It's thought control, erasing your mind
A televised culture united by greed
Satellites transmit the model family
Listen up, now it ain't what it seems
Pay no attention to the biased news team
You must understand it's part of the plan
Living in fear under their command
Failed actors reading the news with a smile
The sounds in High Fidelity are my personal luxury.
The songs I love are the ska songs that Melt Banana be covering.
You can't have a turntable when you live in a van.
X would have to pimp my ride. That's something I can't plan.
So now I'll have to listen to my compact disc.
and hope that all my, they are not at risk
I MISS MY PARADISE/ MY VINYL PARADISE
This music that I make you, is for your ass to shake to
Cause something was lost along the way
All the girls at the shows,
They cry but don't have a bloody nose
Yeah something was lost along the way
So I'll record a song upon a compact disc
Hey! This is a song for aguy who helped me start the band
Hey! We wrote a record from a riff he wrote with his hands
I might laugh if I didn't know his past because I know he wasn't trying to be funny
When he said to you this sound is through, let;s start making money
What of the summer, yeah it can be a bummer if you're not supposed to be there
In the punk machine you become the kinks, we've been there & we've been scared
Fill up the tank, get out make the kids skank
Your shows were packed, don't say that NOBODY CAME
Just bring the rock & wait for the kids to roll
If there's only a few, it's all the same
When we were younger nothing seemed to matter
We faced fears walked on stage to laughter
Now you're older & you're smoking cigarettes
Only talk about the past, no concern for what's next
He's saying he's depressed / Cause he never got that check
You do nothing there's not much for you to expect
You wanna have this band? You've gotta be a man
You've gotta take a stand and build it with your own hands
He says he owes nothing to anyone
Remember that he's not from where we're from
I was there wearing Hawaiian shirts in December
Carson Daly's posing as a RBF member
Just so happy getting thrown in the trash
Who'd have known that six years later
I'd be sitting on my ass
Light the fuse again
Ska-Boom & Everybody changes their attitude
Ska-Boom & Everybody wanna be a rude boy
Ska-Boom & Everybody changes their attitude
When it's not so cool anymore
Their gonna turn their backs you know it's true
I'm aware of where the chips have fallen
Is bringing it back my true calling?
Just so happy getting stoned & getting trashed
And I know that six years later
I've got nothing left to lose, but everything to gain
So sick & fucking tired of living life just the same
With no cash, no money, no stash, no change
I'll get out of this place, and go so far out of range
Bright Lights & Texaco stations are a thing of the past
It seems that my appreciation of life is now back in tact
All I do is spend my flow. There's so many that I still owelf
I could, yeah I would, but I can't no I can't make things right
I'll do my best to thank the rest till our problems are all out of sight
Then the past is past, I'll tell you one last time I'm sorry
Goodbye. Goodbye. You know you'll see me again.
It's Thursday night,
and I'm bored all the time
Going to the place where I
failed for the first
time in my life Got all caught up smoking pot,
having too much fun It ended up in
my education's destruction
We're B2M let's.. Fuck Shit Up
This one particular time,
that always comes to mind We gotta
fill up on life using spirits and wines
What started out as a parade's corruption
We're B2M let's.. Fuck Shit Up
I'll rip those plugs from your stretched ears
This band is your band's biggest fear
You might have fans, you might go far
It's too bad I cam to kill all the punk rock stars
(CAUSE THEY KILLED PUNK ROCK)
Wipe the make up from your eyes
You're playing music I despise
You might have fans, you might go far
It's too bad I came to kill all the punk rock stars
(CAUSE THEY KILLED PUNK ROCK)
I obsess why I excess
To live, to love, to write, to rock, to roll
