An estimated 1,000 tonnes of tyres caught fire at a recycling plant in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire (16-1-13). A total of 14 fire crews from across North and West Yorkshire were in attendance bringing with them a High Volume Pump which can move large quantities of water over a larger distance than a normal fire engine. Houses and schools in the area were advised to keep windows and doors closed and for people to stay indoors. Video recorded by myself from a distance of around 2 miles.

A fire involving 15,000 tonnes of tyres at a recycling plant has blanketed York in plumes of black smoke that have reached heights of up to 6,000ft. Around 70 firefighters are tackling the fire in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, which started at 08:40 GMT on Thursday. The plume of smoke is so big that it has been picked up by satellites. Flights at a nearby airfield have also been grounded. Dave Edwards reports.

Yorkshire recycling plant fire produces 1000 ft plume of smoke

Thick black smoke can be seen for miles after a fire involving 15,000 tonnes of tyres started at a recycling plant Sherburn-in-Elmet in North Yorkshire North Yorkshire Fire Service sent 14 crews to the scene at Sherburn-in-Elmet, as well as a specialist pump which can send water longer distances than normal. Crews from Humberside and West Yorkshire also attended the fire, which broke out around 8.30am. People living near the blaze at the plant have been advised to keep windows closed after up to 15,000 tonnes of material, including tyres, caught light, sending 1000ft plume of black smoke into the air. North Yorkshire Police said the smoke was heading across the moors and towards the east coast, and because the plume was high in the sky the risk of harm to the public was low. A Public Health England spokesman said: "So far, there have been no reports of any people experiencing ill effects from this fire. "However, sheltering indoors provides protection from exposure to smoke, so we advise residents in areas affected by smoke from the fire to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed as much as possible to limit any exposure to smoke. "Reports from the scene indicate that the smoke is not affecting areas close to the site at this time." "Anyone who suffers from respiratory conditions, such as asthma, is advised to ensure they have taken any prescribed medication and keep it to hand. If you are concerned about the effects of smoke on your health, telephone your GP or call 111 for advice. "Motorists who have to travel through any smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed. "The emergency services are on-site dealing with the fire and the other agencies involved will continue to monitor the situation and issue any necessary further advice to the public, businesses and organisations affected." Schools in local villages were alerted to the potential dangers.

Huge tyre fire seen from space Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze involving 15,000 tonnes of tyres at a North Yorkshire recycling plant. The fire at Newgen Recycling Centre in Sherburn-in-Elmet on Thursday sent up a plume of smoke so thick it could be seen from space. Fire chiefs are letting the smouldering tyres burn out but warn it could take several days. Once extinguished, investigators will work to establish the cause of the blaze. One of the things they will look at is whether the tyres were stored correctly. Dave McCabe, area manager for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "One of the questions we will be asking is how this fire started and why it was allowed to spread so rapidly, because what we would recommend is that a tyre dump of this nature would be split into small stacks. "At the end of this we will be looking to see if that legislation was complied with."'Following procedure' Councillor Mark Crane, leader of Selby District Council, said an inspection of the site in 2013 found the owners were following the storage recommendations requested by planning officers. He added: "We put a number of planning regulations in place for the storage of the tyres, it's clearly too early to see whether these were followed but officers did go last year and there were only minor modifications. "At the time, [the owners] were following the procedures we had laid out." Residents are still being advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid unnecessary journeys. At its height, 100 firefighters and 14 fire engines were involved in tackling the blaze at Lennerton Lane.

RESIDENTS living near the site of a huge tyre fire are being warned to take precautions due to smoke from the blaze descending today. Police and fire service officials say the fire at Gascoigne Wood Mine, Sherburn-in-Elmet, which involved 1,000 tyres, is under control and has been shrinking in size since first being reported on Thursday. The smoke plume from the blaze, which was previously higher than ground level, was expected to lower today due to a drop in wind strength and foggy conditions near the recycling plant site. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "In response to the potential of the smoke plume lowering up until around midday today, Public Health England has reiterated its advice that people should stay away from the smoke. "Staying indoors provides protection from exposure to smoke, so residents should stay inside and keep doors and windows closed as much as possible.
