Belmont Hill School is an independent boys school located on a 32-acre (130,000 m2) campus in Belmont, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. The school enrolls approximately 440 students in grades 7-12, separated into the Middle School (grades 7-9) and the Upper School (grades 10-12), and refers to these grades as "Forms" with a Roman Numeral I through VI. While the majority of attending students are day students, there are some who enroll in the school's five-day boarding program, which becomes an option for students in their 9th grade year. In addition to the school's history of academic prestige, the school exhibits a rich athletic tradition as a participant in the competitive Independent School League. Members of the Class of 2010 were accepted at 42 colleges and universities. Belmont Hill is also a founding member of the International Boys' Schools Coalition.
The school was founded in 1923 by a group of seven incorporators seeking a non-boarding institution for their sons that would allow for small classes and personal accountability. At the time of its incorporation, the location atop Belmont Hill was not yet developed and belonged to the Belmont Hill Trust. With the help of Robert Atkins, an incorporator and member of the Trust, 19 acres (77,000 m2) of undeveloped, rough, and swampy land was purchased in March 1923 and Belmont Hill’s first Headmaster, Reginald Heber Howe, was appointed.
Belmont may refer to:
A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit (e.g. Box Hill, Surrey).
The distinction between a hill and a mountain is unclear and largely subjective, but a hill is universally considered to be less tall and less steep than a mountain. In the United Kingdom, geographers historically regarded mountains as hills greater than 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, which formed the basis of the plot of the 1995 film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In contrast, hillwalkers have tended to regard mountains as peaks 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level: the Oxford English Dictionary also suggests a limit of 2,000 feet (610 m) and Whittow states "Some authorities regard eminences above 600 m (2,000 ft) as mountains, those below being referred to as hills." The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines hill as an upland with a relative height up to 200 m (660 ft).
The Hill School is a preparatory boarding school for boys and girls located in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, about 35 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
The Hill is part of an organization known as the Ten Schools Admissions Organization (TSAO). This organization was founded more than forty years ago on the basis of a number of common goals and traditions. Member schools include The Hill School, Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy, The Lawrenceville School, The Taft School, The Hotchkiss School, St. Paul's School, Loomis Chaffee, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Phillips Academy Andover. The Hill is also accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
As of July 2015, The Hill's endowment was approximately $155 million.
The Hill School was founded in 1851 by the Rev. Matthew Meigs as the Family Boarding School for Boys and Young Men. The School opened on May 1, 1851, enrolling 25 boys for the first year. The Family Boarding School was the first of its kind in America. According to Paul Chancellor’s The History of The Hill School: 1851-1976, “He [Meigs] wanted to stress that he was not founding still another academy, but a type of school quite new and rare in America. There is a tendency to think that the boys’ boarding school as we know it existed as long as there have been private schools. It has not. Most of the 12 to 15 schools generally considered the “core” group were established in the last half of the nineteenth century. Of this whole group of schools, The Hill was the first to be founded as a family boarding school, i.e., a school where the students lived on campus, as opposed to boarding with families in the town. Upholding The Family Boarding School tradition are the approximately 30 percent of today's Hill students who have a legacy connection. Today's student body includes young women who were first admitted to The Hill in 1998.

Probably one my most epic races so far - the Quarter final of Henley Royal Regatta 2009, against Belmont Hill School, USA. So epic in fact, my lips went numb during it. This was our final - if we won this, we had a straightforward Saturday to reach the final. Belmont came over saying they were the only crew who could challenge Eton - that, after how Eton embarrassed everyone at National Schools, none of the British crews were up to snuff. Into a small stream, and with a mild headwind, they went out hard to try and kill us off before the Barrier. They even had clear water, as the stream advantage switched to us. But we were known for our relentless pace in the second half, and wore them down through Fawley. The guys always believed, trusted me when I told them they could still win. Even ...

The emperor penguin is a social animal in its nesting and its foraging behaviour; birds hunting together may coordinate their diving and surfacing.[51] Individuals may be active day or night. A mature adult travels throughout most of the year between the nesting area and ocean foraging areas; the species disperses into the oceans from January to March.[13] The American physiologist Gerry Kooyman revolutionized the study of penguin foraging behaviour in 1971 when he published his results from attaching automatic dive-recording devices to emperor penguins. He found that the species reaches depths of 265 m (869 ft), with dive periods of up to 18 minutes.[51] Later research revealed a small female had dived to a depth of 535 m (1,755 ft) near McMurdo Sound. It is possible that emperor penguin...
