Inside the USS Bowfin
William Joel goes inside the USS Bowfin (SS/AGSS-287), Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the bowfin, a voracious, predatory fish native to the Great Lakes, the Mississippi valley, and nearby waters. This dull green, but iridescent fish is little used for food or sport. Reactivated because of the Navys need to expand the fleet to support United Nations-led forces during the Korean War, the submarine was recommissioned on 27 July 1951 and, following shakedown training, sailed for the Pacific. After arriving at San Diego, California on 6 October, she worked from that port for the next two years, devoting her time to training operations and local exercises. The nominal ending of hostilities in Korea in the summer of 1953 reduced the Navys need for active submarines and prompted Bowfins second inactivation. She arrived at San Francisco on 8 October 1953 and was placed out of commission, in reserve, at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 22 April 1954. The warship remained there until moving to Seattle, Washington, on 1 May 1960 to replace Puffer (SS-268) as the Naval Reserve training submarine there and to begin a bit over a decades service. Her name was finally struck from the Navy list on 1 December 1971, and she was taken back to Pearl Harbor, where she now serves as a memorial. before asking questions: that were previous, let's say first attempts of producing videos from ingame footage to upload it on YT. The intention was not(!) to show, how to or how not to fight against destroyers, but to create dramaturgic effects for the most intense experience, what was going on in a sub during the WWII and how the crew must have been felt, when they got hunted after discovery by any destroyers. It was no fun and according to reports of real WWII-sub-commanders, they did not always fire by accurately calculated solutions, but shot often just " from the hip", because torpedos mostly failed anyway. Often enough there was no time for best firering solutions during a hunt and beside that, crews experienced, that they were able as to accurately fire "from the hip" as to fire with firering solutions. Because fireing solutions cost a lot of time and when destroyers had you in sight already, it was pretty easy for them to avoid impacts, unless you could do a surprise attack or you got really close to it. ;-) But the reverse of the medal was, if you got too close, they could ram you, before you could duck again. And to show even that, how it looks like through a peri and how it must have been felt like was another intention as well for the dramaturgy of the vids. And of course, how realisticly and intensly or even not SH IV simulates the naval side of the WWII. It's a great game with a large modding community, because the codes of the game are really very <b>...</b>

My friend and I caught this bowfin in Bull Creek close to where the mouth of the stream reaches the Allegheny River. Of course we had no idea what it was nor were we prepared to land such a beast... So enjoy as hilarity ensues. Note: this fish was released shortly after this video was captured as it was a female and bowfins are considered endangered.

Bowfin
Bowfins are an order (Amiiformes, ) of primitive ray-finned fish. Only one species, the bowfin Amia calva of family Amiidae, survives today, although additional species in six families are known from Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Eocene fossils. The bowfin, the gar, and the sturgeons are among the few extant freshwater fish that were contemporaries of the dinosaurs.
Bowfins are found throughout eastern North America, typically in slow-moving backwaters, canals and ox-bow lakes. When the oxygen level is low (as often happens in still waters), the bowfin can rise to the surface and gulp air into its swim bladder, which is lined with blood vessels and can serve as a lung.
Description and biology
The most distinctive characteristic of the bowfin is its very long dorsal fin consisting of 145 to 250 rays, and running from mid-back to the base of the tail. The caudal fin is a single lobe, though heterocercal. They can grow up to in length, and weigh . Other noticeable features are the black "eye spot" usually found high on the caudal peduncle, and the presence of a gular plate. The gular plate is a bony plate located on the exterior of the lower jaw, between the two sides of the lower jaw bone.The bowfin is an indiscriminate predator that readily preys on a broad variety of arthropod and vertebrate prey, from insects and crawfish to other fish and frogs.
The male bowfin exhibits extensive parental care. The male clears an area in the mud for the female to lay eggs in, and then fertilizes them. He hovers nearby and aggressively protects the eggs and the fry after they emerge.
Fishing
Bowfin are usually not considered a good food fish compared to more popular freshwater gamefish species, such as pike or trout. They are generally regarded as trash fish by sportsmen in the United States, because they eat more desirable species, including crayfish. They will occasionally strike - and sometimes ruin with their powerful jaws - artificial lures, but they generally strike on live or cut fishes. When hooked, Bowfin fight powerfully. Bowfin should be handled carefully, as they have very sharp teeth. They will continue to struggle even when pulled out of the water, and will attempt to bite anyone who is handling them.The list of local and alternate names the bowfin is known by is lengthy, but common ones include "dogfish", "mudfish", "grindle" (or "grinnel"),"swamp muskie", "black fish", "cottonfish" "swamp bass", "poisson-castor", "Speckled Cat" "beaverfish", "Cypress trout" and "lawyer". In parts of Louisiana they are called "tchoupique" or "choupique".
