Demonstrators opposed to the construction of a 1-point-4 billion dollar telescope on a sacred site in Hawaii have gathered to picket the ground-breaking ceremony for the project.
If it goes ahead, the telescope would rise 30 meters above the summit of Mauna Kea, and opponents say it would damage the area culturally, environmentally and spiritually.

This young Kiwikiu is calling for his parents while he foraging in the native Hawaiian plant, Akala (Rubus hawaiensis). Kiwikiu are an endangered species, only 500 of them exist in the world.
