James Barbour (June 10, 1775 - June 7, 1842) was an American lawyer, a member and speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, the 18th Governor of Virginia, the first Governor to reside in the current Virginia Governor's Mansion, a U.S. Senator from 1814–1825, and the United States Secretary of War from 1825-1828.
Barbour was a renowned statesman and orator. His abilities to persuade by speech were noted by several of his peers, including John Quincy Adams. Barboursville, Virginia located in Orange County was named after James Barbour. The ruin of Barbour's mansion, Barboursville, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and can be found on the grounds of Barboursville Vineyards in the Madison-Barbour Rural Historic District in Barboursville, Virginia. The mansion was designed by James Barbour's friend, Thomas Jefferson. Barbour County, Alabama is named in his honor. Barbour County in West Virginia, as well as Barbourville, Kentucky and Barboursville, West Virginia are all named in honor of James Barbour. He was the brother of Philip Pendleton Barbour, as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court as well as the first cousin of John S. Barbour and first cousin, once removed of John S. Barbour, Jr..
James Barbour (February 26, 1828 – October 29, 1895) was a prominent American lawyer, planter, delegate from Virginia to the 1860 Democratic National Convention, delegate to the 1861 Virginia secession convention, and a major in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Barbour was born on February 26, 1828 at Catalpa in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was the son of John S. Barbour, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's 15th congressional district, and his wife Ella A. Byrne.
Barbour attended Georgetown College from September through December 1840. and attended the University of Virginia School of Law between 1841 and 1842. Barbour studied law under John Tayloe Lomax in Fredericksburg, Virginia and was admitted to the bar in 1844.
Barbour participated as a delegate representing Virginia at the 1860 Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. A year later, Barbour was a delegate to the 1861 Virginia secession convention.
James Barbour (born April 25, 1966), is a singer and Broadway actor.
Barbour was born April 25, 1966 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He graduated from Hofstra University.
In late 2007, he performed the role of Sydney Carton in a world premiere pre-Broadway musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.
It was announced in January 2015 that Barbour would take the role of Phantom in the Broadway musical Phantom of the Opera. He was cast once more as Sydney Carton in the Broadway musical adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities, which opened for preview on August 19, 2008, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York.
He also starred on Broadway in such Tony Award-winning and nominated shows as Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Carousel, Jane Eyre (for which he was nominated for a Drama League Award), Urinetown, and Stephen Sondheim's Assassins.
As of February 9, 2015, he has been performing the title role in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.
