ARIRANG NEWS 18:00(Weekend) (THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT FOR ARIRANG NEWS THAT AIRED ON 26 Apr 2014- 18:00 KST.) Title: TITLE Title: Opening Hello.... and thanks for joining us. To our viewers here in Korea and around the world, it's SIX P.M. on Saturday, April twenty-sixth here in Seoul. I'm Mark Broome... and you're tuned into our ongoing coverage of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster. Title: 1 Ferry disaster: Search operation slowed down Search operations are now into the eleventh day at the site of the accident. The pace of recovering bodies from the ferry has slowed as the authorities and divers struggle amid inclement weather conditions and powerful currents. For the latest, we are going to connect to our Song Ji-sun , at Paengmok-hang Harbor - the nearest point of land... to the accident site. Ji-sun... Mark. As you mentioned, it's been a slow day here. The sky has been grim since early afternoon and rain is forecast for the evening. With the wind and currents getting stronger, rescuers can only get into the water at certain times -- and only two time windows are open for later tonight at around six-thirty and after midnight.- published: 26 Apr 2014

Arirang Special M60Ep248 The Secret of K-pop Incubating K-pop: the core contents of the creative economy K-pop began to expand its ground to overseas in late 1990s with a young artist Boa paving the way. Since the turn of the millenium, K-pop made great headway with explosion of fans from around the world mesmerized with powerful performances on stage along with easy to follow music. Helped with the development of YouTube and social network services(SNS), fans of K-pop grew even more since 2009 and concert tickets were sold out, a phenomenon still witnessed to date. Such popularity in K-pop is attracting a great number of visitors from all over the world to the Gangnam area where K-pop talent agencies, such as Cube Entertainment, SM Entertainment and JYP, are located. However, the affect of K-pop popularity is far greater than just selling concert tickets and souvenirs. K-pop is helping to promote sales of a variety of Korean items overseas, such as cosmetics and electronics products. K-pop is proving itself to be the epitome of the creative economy. Systemizing incubation of K-pop star opening grounds for exporting training know-hows Nowadays, a K-pop star is recognized as a global superstar. The success of K-pop isn't just about artists performing overseas. Artists from Korea and other countries are working closely together and there have been exports of the so-called "K-pop incubating system", which applies method of nurturing K-pop stars to stars-to-be from abroad. Talent agencies from other countries are sending their singer apprentices to Korea to be trained, and learning the teaching know-hows and the system. However, there are concerns expressed on how the K-pop stars are made despite such methods have resulted in making huge changes in the global pop music front economically and culturally. Some express concerns that the training process is too harsh for young children to handle, agencies are mass producing technicians rather than popular culture artists, and that K-pop is just mostly about dancing idol groups. The Secret of K-Pop Incubating Then what methods do talent agencies use to nurther K-pop stars these days? Arirang Special program, [The Secret of K-Pop Incubating], looks into how K-pop stars are made, which everyone is curious to find out. The program also examines how the concerns expressed are dealt with. In finding the answers, we followed Sorn, a singer apprentice at Cube Entertainment, one of top four talent agencies in Korea. She is from Thailand and has been in training for two years in hopes of becoming the next big star after having been discovered at a TV talent search program. She is one of many examples on how hard many people work to produce a K-pop star. The program also follows U-KISS and AOA to show the hard efforts put in by the industry to make them shine so big. It isn't easy for the star themselves to maintain their popularity without help from surroundings. The program, in general, reveals the secret behind the "incubating system" of K-pop star, which has never been told so openly before by the talent agencies themselves. It also shows why K-pop will continue to make great headway. ARIRANG NEWS 21:00 Fifteen more bodies retrieved, raising death toll to 80
It's been more than five full days now since Korea's worst ferry disaster in two decades, with search-and-rescue operations continuing through the day and into night. Unfortunately... no survivors have been found and the death toll continues to rise. Let's go live to our Ji Myung-kil standing by at Paengmok-hang Harbor,... which is just 20 kilometers from the accident scene. Myung-kil... what's the latest body count? Within the past hour FIFTEEN more bodies have been recovered, raising the confirmed death toll to 80. Rescue teams are currently focusing their search on the third and fourth floors. More than 200 coast guard ships and navy vessels, 13 fishing boats, 35 aircraft and more than 500 divers have been deployed today. Two remotely controlled submersibles are also searching inside the sunken ferry with the help of two U.S. experts. How many people are we still missing? We are still missing 222 people from the sunken Sewol-ho ferry and nearly 90 percent of those are from Danwon High School in Ansan. Family members of the missing took a boat ride to the site of the sinking, earlier today. Search-and-rescue operations will also continue throughout the night as the divers will be working around the clock. Flares and fishing boats with powerful lights will help the divers operate in the dark. Currently,... six guide ropes are attached to the vessel. How will the weather conditions look tonight? The weather conditions seem favorable with winds reaching 5 meters per second and tidal waves reaching the 1-meter level. This has been Ji Myung-kil reporting from Paengmok-hang harbor.- published: 21 Apr 2014

ARIRANG NEWS 10:00 Captain, two crew members arrested for sunken ferry
ARIRANG NEWS 10:00 Captain, two crew members arrested for sunken ferry
More disappointment, anger and sorrow for the families of the missing passengers... as another day passed with no new survivors found and more confusion and miscommunication. Four days have now passed since search and rescue operations began... and hopes are dimming. But... families and rescuers are clinging onto the hope that the ferry - now completely submerged - may contain pockets of air that could sustain the missing. As of now... 29 passengers have officially been confirmed dead and 273 remain missing... out of 476 passengers and crew. For the latest on the ferry sinking and other updates,... we have Connie Lee standing by in the newsroom... Connie, we heard news earlier this morning... that divers have spotted bodies *inside the hull... for the first time since rescue operations began on Wednesday... what's the latest... Hey guys-- just a few hours ago... officials said divers may have found three possible bodies... inside the fourth floor of the sunken ferry. Divers were not actually able to get inside the ship early this morning, because they couldn't break through the windows... but officials say they are currently working on it at this time. We'll bring you more on that... as updates come in. In the meantime... there has been a change to the total number of passengers inside that ferry. Late Friday... government officials acknowledged that they made a mistake... in tallying up the numbers. One more person was added to the total number of passengers--- making it 4-hundred-76 people on that ferry... and NOT 4-hundred-75 as originally reported. But the number of rescued... has been reduced-- to 174... from 179-- as you can imagine.. this has caused outrage from relatives of those still unaccounted for. The number of dead... is currently at 29-- And... new this Saturday morning... here in Korea... The captain of the ferry and two other crew members are in custody right now and have been formally charged. The 68-year-old captain [ ] Lee Joon-seok... is charged with five violations. This includes... charges of negligence and a violation of a ship crew law... which requires crew to remain on the ship, until all passengers escape. [ ] You can finally see his face here--- After leaving a court hearing... early this morning... the captain spoke to reporters-- And here... he tells reporters that he told people to evacuate... Let's hear for ourselves--- : " ?" [ : "Did you give out evacuation orders?"] : " ." [ : "Yes."] : " ?" [ : "You told the passengers to evacuate?"] : " " [ : "Yes."] " ." [ : "It's not that I wasn't there -- I gave out clear orders for the ship's course, before I had to briefly go to my room. The accident had happened by the time I came back."] And there you hear it... here the captain is basically saying... it wasn't his fault that the ship had tipped over. And earlier... he clearly said... YES, he did tell passengers to evacuate-- but as we've continually heard from surviving passengers... they say they never heard those orders. Jinjoo, Mark? Yes, Connie, under maritime law, the long and short of it is that the captain is completely responsible for the ship, the safety of the passengers and the actions of the crew. And... it wasn't just the captain facing the law... two more crew members were charged and arrested... could you tell us more about that? The two other crew members who are also in custody... are a 25-year-old... third mate... with the surname [ ] Park... who was reportedly at the helm of the ferry when it sank. Another crew member is a 55-year-old man, of the surname [ ]. These people were apparently the first ones to escape the sinking ferry. Shocking if true... it is their responsibility to stay onboard to oversee an orderly evacuation... and we've heard countless stories... from surviving passengers that they were told to stay inside.... and not move even putting their life vests on and staying within the confinds of the ferry... Yes... and actually new amateur video released... taken by a passenger... shows people staying put inside their cabins... even though the ship was clearly severly tilted. You see here... passengers passing out life vests... and some already wearing them. Passengers say they thought about evacuating the ship earlier..... but because the announcement from the ship's crew told them to stay put... that's exactly what they did.--- *That's all I have for you right now from the newsroom, back to you guys, Jinjoo and Mark. Thanks, Connie for that.- published: 19 Apr 2014
