This Dhimay dance is the presentation of Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA) at the Nepalese Pavilion of NECASE during the 40th Edmonton Heritage Festival. The dance performance was directed by Mrs. Poonam Shrestha Malakar and the performers were Ms. Samridhi Shrestha, Prisha Shrestha and Rupiksha Nyachhyon.
The dance performers were from Newa Music and Dance Heritage Project run by Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA). The project was funded by the City of Edmonton. Meanwhile, NCSA has been conducting the music and dance heritage project in the community since last year with the support from the City of Edmonton. NCSA is a non-profit organization incorporated in April 22, 2013 under Societies Acts of Alberta to practice, promote and preserve Newa culture and tradition in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Hemanta Joshi is the founding president of NCSA.
Dhimay dance is one of the popular ethnic Newa dances of Nepal. This dance is especially performed by Jyapus (people with agricultural occupation) of Kathmandu valley playing the musical instrument of Dhimay (a special drum) along with Bhusyah (a pair of cymbals). Dhimay is considered as the oldest ethnic musical instrument of Nepal. According to the legend, this instrument was invented and played by Mahadev, the Hindu god of destroyer. It is played in almost all ceremonial occasions. Dhimay is constructed from cylindrical hollowed tree trunk with leather pads at both of its ends. Its left hand side sounds louder than the other side which carries a tuning paste inside. The main feature of this instrument is its capacity to produce a multiple reverberating echo. The left side (Mankhan) is played directly by hand and the right side (Nasah) is played with a thin stick, made of cane, which is normally curved at one end.

Dhimay
Dhimay, Dhimaya (Newar: धिमय्) or Dhime (धिमे) is a drum, and according to the Sachs-Hornbostel classification belongs to the category of double-headed cylindrical membranophone.
Description
The drum is rather big compared to other drums played by the Newar. The size of this instrument varies from diameter of 40 inches to 51 inches and length of 17 inches to 21 inches. The shell of the drum is made of wood or metal. Sometimes wooden drums are partly covered with metal foil. The shape of old Dhimay drums is mostly irregular, formed by the natural shape of the piece of wood being used to make the drum body (see image at the mimo-db). Modern drums are either cylindrical or slightly barrel-shaped. Both heads are made of goat skin. On the inside of the left membrane, called Mankhah (Haima in Bhaktapur) a red tuning paste (similar in function to the Syahi) is applicated, providing a deep sound.
Playing technique
The left side (Mankhah) is played directly by hand playing either at the upper part of the membrane (ghe), producing a long resonating sound, or a downward stroke (kha), producing a sharp crisp sound. The right membrane, called Nasah, is played with a thin stick, made of cane, which is normally curved at one end. In addition to this three basic strokes a fourth type of stroke(dha) is played, combining the low resonating sound of the left hand i.e. on upper part and the stroke of the right hand.

NCSA is a non-profit organization incorporated in April 22, 2013 under Societies Acts of Alberta to practice, promote and preserve Newa culture and tradition in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Hemanta Joshi is the founding president of NCSA.
Dhimay dance is one of the popular ethnic Newa dances of Nepal. This dance is especially performed by Jyapus (people with agricultural occupation) of Kathmandu valley playing the musical instrument of Dhimay (a special drum) along with Bhusyah (a pair of cymbals). Dhimay is considered as the oldest ethnic musical instrument of Nepal. According to the legend, this instrument was invented and played by Mahadev, the Hindu god of destroyer. It is played in almost all ceremonial occasions. Dhimay is constructed from cylindrical hollowed tree trunk with leather pads at both of its ends. Its left hand side sounds louder than the other side which carries a tuning paste inside. The main feature of this instrument is its capacity to produce a multiple reverberating echo. The left side (Mankhan) is played directly by hand and the right side (Nasah) is played with a thin stick, made of cane, which is normally curved at one end.

This Dhimay dance is the presentation of Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA) at the Nepalese Pavilion of NECASE during the 40th Edmonton Heritage Festival. The dance performance was directed by Mrs. Poonam Shrestha Malakar and the performers were Ms. Samridhi Shrestha, Prisha Shrestha and Rupiksha Nyachhyon.
The dance performers were from Newa Music and Dance Heritage Project run by Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA). The project was funded by the City of Edmonton. Meanwhile, NCSA has been conducting the music and dance heritage project in the community since last year with the support from the City of Edmonton.
