The Sethians were a Gnostic sect during the Roman era. Alongside Valentinianism, Sethianism was one of the main currents of Gnosticism during the 2nd to 3rd centuries. Their thinking, though it is predominantly Judaic in foundation, is arguably strongly influenced by Platonism. Sethianism attributed its gnosis to Seth, third son of Adam and Eve and Norea, wife of Noah (who also plays a role in Mandeanism and Manicheanism).
The Sethians (Latin Sethoitae) are first mentioned, alongside the Ophites, in the 2nd century, by Irenaeus and in Pseudo-Tertullian (Ch.30).
According to Frederik Wisse (1981) all subsequent accounts appear to be largely dependent on Irenaeus. Hippolytus repeats information from Irenaeus. According to Epiphanius of Salamis (c.375) Sethians were in his time found only in Egypt and Palestine, although fifty years before they had been found as far away as Greater Armenia (Panarion 39.1.1 2; 40.1). One of the sources of Epiphanius, the lost Syntagma of Hippolytus of Rome, was also the source for Christian heresies before Noetus in Philaster's Catalogue of heresies. Nathaniel Lardner (1838) noted that Philaster places the Ophites, Cainites, and Sethians as pre-Christian Jewish sects. However, since Sethians identified Seth with Christ (Second Logos of the Great Seth), Philaster's belief that the Sethians had pre-Christian origins, other than in syncretic absorption of Jewish and Greek pre-Christian sources, has not found acceptance in later scholarship.

Not only was Sethianism the fountainhead of so many Gnostic schools in antiquity, including the Valentinians, Mandaeans & Manichaeans, they might be the Christianity before Christianity. We also discuss the ideas of other Gnostic sectarians like the Ophites and Barbelorites; and the intimate theology behind the Sethian Gospel of Judas and other so-called Gnostic texts. The Secret Book of John, also called the Apocryphon of John, is a second-century Sethian Gnostic Christian text of secret teachings. Since it was known to the church father Irenaeus, it must have been written before around 180. It describes Jesus appearing and giving secret knowledge (gnosis) to John the Apostle. The author describes this having occurred after Jesus "has gone back to the place from which he came". This book is reputed to bear this revelation. Many Christians in the second century hoped to receive a transcendent personal revelation such as Paul the Apostle was able to report to the church at Corinth (2 Corinthians 12:1-4) or that John experienced on the isle of Patmos, which inspired the Book of Revelation. As Acts narrates what happened after the time Jesus ascended to h...

Scholarship not only supports the idea that Judas was a demonic villain, but the actual incarnation of the Demiurge on Earth. He is a Supreme Archon with both Gnosis and dominance of the universe, destined to battle the Cosmic Christ. These new revelations also takes us deep into Sethianism, including their heavy use of magic and magical gems; their essential reliance on astrology and astrotheology; and the dark reasons they rebelled so vehemently against the early Christian church. Sitting on the side of a lonely road
Beyond middle of nowhere
"Trace the memories of our times
For the ones who had to fall
You may die before the end
But the end is yet so far"
All around the world the lonely bloodstone
Walks in search of another year
"For there is something new
You will find each passing day
Come together for the way
The life you were born to lead"
Come heed the call of the wild
The east and west are mine
Another chapter in the story
Let's make some history
Down the dirty road I look again
The footprints join and divide
"Ask again for some consolation
Burn these bridges down
You may die before the end
But the end is yet so far"
