Ayatollah (UK /aɪəˈtɒlə/ or US /aɪətoʊlə/; Persian: آيتالله āyatollāh from Arabic: آية الله, āyatu l-Lāh "Sign of God") is a high ranking title given to Usuli Twelver Shī‘ah clerics. Those who carry the title are experts in Islamic studies such as jurisprudence, ethics, and philosophy and usually teach in Islamic seminaries.[citation needed] The next lower clerical rank is Hojatoleslam wal-muslemin. Ayatollah is similar in rank to a Bishop in Christianity.[citation needed]
The name "ayatollah" originates from the Quran where the Shi'a, unlike the Sunni, interpret that human beings can also be regarded as signs of God, the literal translation of the title. 51:20–21 of the Quran states:
The title is currently granted to top Shia mujtahid, after completing sat'h and kharij studies in the hawza. By then the mujtahid would be able to issue his own edicts from the sources of Islamic religious laws: the Qur'an, the Sunnah, ijmāʻ, and 'aql ("intellect", rather than the Sunnī principle of qiyas). Most of the time this is attested by an issued certificate from his teachers. The ayatollah can then teach in hawzas according to his speciality, can act as a reference for their religious questions, and act as a judge. There is an important difference from Shi'a ayatollahs and "saints" in other religions and Sunni Islam: ayatollahs are not regarded as enlightened by God Himself, but by the Word of God.
Grand AyatollahSayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei (Persian: سید علی حسینی خامنه ای, Azerbaijani: سید علی حسینی خامنهای – Seyyid Əli Xameneyi, pronounced [ʔæˈliː hoseiˈniː xɒːmeneˈʔiː] ( listen); born 17 July 1939) is the Supreme Leader of Iran, and a Twelver Shi'a marja. He had also served as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1981 to 1989. In 2010, Forbes selected him 26th in the list of 'World's Most Powerful People'.
Holding absolute power in his country, he has been described as one of only three people having "important influence" during the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran . Khamenei was the victim of an attempted assassination in June 1981 that paralyzed his right arm, although so far the biggest challenge to his leadership has been the mass protests following the June 2009 presidential elections during which he strongly supported president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. They have had a falling out since.
Khamenei holds the title of Sayyed, which means that he claims direct patrilineal descent from Ali ibn Abi Talib. Some[which?] of Khamenei's ancestors are from Tafresh in today's Markazi province, and had migrated from their original home in Tafresh to Tabriz. Born in Mashhad, he is second eldest of eight children, and two of his brothers are also clerics. His younger brother, Hadi Khamenei, is a renowned newspaper editor and cleric. Khamenei is Iranian Azeri on his father's side and his mother is a Yazd-native Persian.
"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

He played for Lloyd "Matador" Daley in 1968 and 1969.

The Shah of Iran, he ran from terror
People's revolution taking over th land
It wasn't always like that
There's a new superman - Ayatollah Khomeini
Put a spell on Iran - a dark eye genie
Oh Ayatollah man - he rules the way
He's got a head the size of Hitler
And they call him Ayatollah
He's just another Mussolini
And his name is Khomeini
I'm singing
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ay-oh-oh tollah Khomeini
Aye-oh-aye
He does what he does in the name of religion
There are no answers, there are no questions
Makes his own rules, just another dictator
A game for fools of the gambling nature
Oh Ayatollah man - he rules the way
He's got a head the size of Hitler
And they call him Ayatollah
He's just another Mussolini
And his name is Khomeini
I'm singing
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ayah, Aya-tollah Khomeini
ay-oh-oh tollah Khomeini
Aye-oh-aye
Ayatollah, Ayatollah, Ayatollah, Khomeini!
kho-kho-kho-meini
He's got a head the size of Hitler
And the call him Ayatollah
He's just another Admiral Tojo
and this is how the song goes
Puedes llevarme al Irán
y presentarme al Imán
pasearme por Teherán
y mandarme al frente de Iraq.
Puedes colgarme de los pies
y fusilarme también
cortarme las manos sin piedad
y llevarte a mi chica ye-yé.
Sólo vine a comprar pan
y a mí todo me sale mal
sólo vine a comprar pan
