2016 Open Championship: 4 talking points
Cape Town - Hendrik Stenson claimed his first major victory in a thrilling final round of the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon, finishing at 20-under 264 on Sunday.
Here are some talking points and highlights from the 145th Open Championship:
1. Stenson’s historic win
It’s been a long time coming for the 40-year-old Swedish golfer, but he finally clinched his first major on Sunday in a nail-biting toe-to-toe contest with Phil Mickelson to become the first Scandinavian man to win a major.
His 20-under-par total of 264 was a record low at the Open at Royal Troon thumping past Justin Leonard’s 12-under-par win in 1997.
Stenson’s final-round 63 ties with Mickelson (who achieved this feat on day one at the Open) for the lowest score ever shot in a major. The Swede golfer is the first player to ever score 63 in the final round of the Open and he's 20-under ties with Australian Jason Day's record for score relative to par at a major.
2. Greatest duel - Stenson v Mickelson
It was the 2013 Open all over again, as Mickelson and Stenson were seen fighting it out for the Claret Jug. This time it was the Swedish golfer that prevailed over the five-time major American.
Stenson came into the final day leading by one-stroke at 12 under par, but Mickelson recovered with a birdie on the first to swap positions, but soon after the two were neck-on-neck in the ultimate duel.
Although Stenson won by three strokes, Mickelson was in the form of his life, as he shot a final-round 65 without a single bogey to finish on 17-under at Troon.
"I played a bogey-free round of 65 on the final round of a major, usually that's good enough to do it, and I got beat," said Mickelson after his defeat on Sunday.
The left-hander defeated Stenson by three strokes in 2013, finishing three-under par with a total of 281.

3. The 'Big Four' disappointment
The Open was a frustrating tournament for the 'Big Four' with only Rory McIlory finishing tied fifth with a final round of 67 and ending on a total of 280.
US Open champion and world No 2 Dustin Johnson finish two strokes behind (282) McIlroy, while world No 1 Jason Day finishing 10th on 285.
Twenty-two-year-old Jordan Spieth, who almost didn't make the cut, scored 68 in the final round to end with a total of 286.
4. Andrew 'Beef' Johnston
Andrew Johnston, who made his debut at the Open, was greeted on every putt with a loud reverberated 'Beeeef' chant from the Scottish crowd as ended the final round on 73 with a total of 281.
The big and bearded Johnston stood on third when he picked up birdies in the first, third and fourth holes, however
four bogeys led to him slipping and ending off in eighth position.
The 27-year-old, who is currently ranked 104th in the world, loved every minute of his time on the course and rejoiced at the home crowds attention, grinning and showing thumps up with every round of applause. It was pretty refreshing to see and certainly put a smile on spectators and critics alike.

The 2016 Open Championship was the 145th Open Championship, played 14–17 July at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the ninth Open Championship played at the Old Course of Troon, and the fifth since gaining royal status. The Open was won by Henrik Stenson who achieved a record 20 under par. He became the first Scandinavian man to win a major title.
This was the first Open Championship with live domestic television coverage on Sky Sports, after it had been shown on the BBC from 1955 to 2015.[3] BBC TV coverage was a two-hour highlights programme each evening.[4] The Open Championship was covered by Group B of the Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events which meant that highlights must be made available to all television viewers, particularly those who do not have subscription television.[5]
In the United States, it was the first Open Championship to be televised by NBC (Golf Channel's parent network), after 55 years of being televised in the U.S. by ESPN/ABC; Golf Channel broadcast the first and second rounds of the tournament, marking the first time that Golf Channel had coverage of a men's major championship. For two decades (1995–2014), NBC televised the U.S. Open and other championships of the USGA, which switched to Fox in 2015.

Phil Mickelson shot an 8-under-par 63 to take a three-shot lead over Martin Kaymer and Patrick Reed. His 63 tied him with 27 others for the lowest round in a major championship.[22][23] Mickelson had a 16-foot putt at the 18th to become the first player to score 62 at a major championship, but the putt lipped out of the hole.

In what was considered one of the greatest final-round duels in major championship history,[29] Henrik Stenson broke the major championship scoring record while establishing a new Open Championship record on his way to his first career major championship. After Stenson began the round with a one-shot advantage over Phil Mickelson, Mickelson quickly jumped into the lead with a birdie at the 1st while Stenson three-putted for bogey. Stenson, however, rebounded with five birdies on the front nine while Mickelson recorded a birdie and an eagle at the par-5 4th, giving Stenson back a one-shot lead.[30] Both birdied the 10th hole, then Stenson made bogey at the 11th to draw level with Mickelson.[31] Beginning at the 14th Stenson recorded three consecutive birdies, including a 51-foot putt from off the green on the 15th to open up a two-shot lead. Mickelson narrowly missed an eagle putt on the 16th while Stenson got up and down from the greenside rough for a birdie to maintain the advantage. With another birdie at the 18th, Stenson tied the major championship scoring record with a round of 63 (−8).

OAKMONT, Pa. — As Dustin Johnson teed off in the final round of the 116th United States Open, his mind-set was simple.
He would ignore the ghosts of majors past. Forget about Shane Lowry’s four-stroke lead. Ignore top-ranked Jason Day and all the other players giving chase at Oakmont Country Club. “It’s just me and the course,” he told himself.
But on the way to victory Sunday, it would become more complicated for Johnson, seemingly one of the most uncomplicated athletes to roam a golf course. Jordan Spieth, the defending champion, described Johnson this month as “a freak golf athlete,” and it is true. His opening drive of the fourth round traveled 378 yards. Enough said.
Aside from being known as a freak athlete, Johnson had a reputation for losing majors in freaky fashion. He lost the 2015 United States Open to Spieth when he three-putted the 72nd hole from 12 feet. He lost the 2010 tournament with a final-round 82 that was like a summons server, materializing out of nowhere.
Johnson held the lead at the halfway point of last year’s British Open, but finished tied for 49th when he could not break par in the final two rounds. He lost the 2010 P.G.A. Championship when he grounded his club in a bunker on the 72nd hole and incurred a penalty that kept him out of a playoff, won by Martin Kaymer.
After his brain cramp at the P.G.A. Championship, Johnson drew criticism for not summoning a rules official to assess if the spot where his ball had come to rest was in one of the hundreds of bunkers that pockmark Whistling Straits.
Fast-forward six years to Sunday, when Johnson saw his ball move on the fifth green. He did not believe he had caused the ball to oscillate, but to be on the safe side, he called a rules official. After a brief discussion, the official determined that no infraction had occurred, and Johnson stepped up and made the par putt to remain one under for the round and four under for the tournament.
Johnson made the turn in two-under 33. On the 12th tee, he was approached by United States Golf Association officials, who explained that a video review had indicated that he might have caused the ball to move in the process of placing his putter behind it at address. He was told that he most likely would be assessed a one-stroke penalty after his round.
At that moment, Johnson was two strokes clear of the field, but it was not just him and the course anymore. It was him and the course and the U.S.G.A. rules committee and his 0-for-28 record in the majors. There were enough factors to clog his head and cloud his thinking.
But Johnson kept calm. Despite a bogey at the 14th hole, he played the final seven holes in even par, making clutch par putts at Nos. 16 and 17 and a birdie at the 18th, which rendered the one-stroke penalty a moot point.
Johnson finished four under par at 276, three strokes ahead of Jim Furyk, Scott Piercy and Lowry.
In the final round at Chambers Bay last year, Johnson had hit two of his best shots of the week on the 18th hole, only to miss a 12-foot putt for eagle to win and three-footer for a birdie that would have forced an 18-hole playoff with Spieth.
On Sunday, with the crowd lining the 18th hole chanting his initials, Johnson hit two of his best shots of the week and made the five-foot putt for birdie to finish with a 69 (with the penalty).
Furyk, the 2003 champion who tied for second at the 2007 Open when it was at Oakmont, closed with a four-under 66 and was the leader in the clubhouse for almost two hours at one under.
Lowry and Piercy were the last two players with a chance to pass Johnson, but Piercy played the back nine in one over for a 69, and Lowry bogeyed three of the last five holes en route to a 76.
Johnson, Furyk, Piercy and Lowry were the only players to break par. Sergio García (70) and Branden Grace (71) tied for fifth at even-par 280.
In his first major, Andrew Landry, who had been at or near the top during the first three days, closed with a 78 to finish in a tie for 15th at five over.

Dustin Johnson wins the 2016 US Open at Oakmont
Ater six near misses in major championships, each seemingly more excruciating than the last, Dustin Johnson is finally a major champion. There was no near miss this year. No rimmed-out putt. No blown opportunity. Even despite some unusual circumstances, the 31-year-old was unflappable and brought home his first elusive major championship victory.
Johnson has long been considered the best player without a major championship. Much of that has been to his own doing as he's faltered in key moments. Johnson had a short par putt to force a playoff at the US Open last year only to miss and add another near miss to his résumé. There were questions of whether he would ever be able to break through and win the big one.
Those questions are now a forgotten thing of the past.
Johnson answered every question on Sunday. He opened the final round trailing Shane Lowry by four shots, but mounted an impressive charge. Then came the weirdness. Prior to grounding his club on a par putt on No. 5, Johnson's ball appeared to move. He asked a rules official and was cleared of any wrong doing. He made the putt and continued his round. Then as he stood on the No. 12 tee, he was alerted that the USGA was going to review the situation and he could be accessed a penalty stroke. He could have been crumbled by the distraction. Instead, he eliminated any possibility of it impacting the outcome. Johnson bogeyed just one hole on Sunday and this time on No. 18 he made the putt. Johnson rolled in a birdie on his 72nd hole to improve to 5-under and eliminate any doubt.
The USGA eventually ruled that Johnson had committed a penalty. He was assessed a one-stroke penalty to finish at 4-under. Had he not closed the way he did, this could have been another career-defining moment of failure. Instead, Johnson wrote his own script.
Johnson has never been among the more emotional players on tour, but it was obvious how much this meant. He let out a fist pump as the birdie dropped before hugging his brother and caddie on the green. He was then greeted by his son and fiancée. It was finally here, the moment he came so close to so many times only to let slip through.
It was a winding path, but Dustin Johnson is now a major champion. He claimed the elusive US Open that he's been so close to for so long and he did it at one of the great courses in golf. There will always be questions of what if with Johnson's major championship career, but there is no questioning how exceptional he played this week and if he deserves his place among the major champions.

The 2015 United States Open Championship was the 115th U.S. Open, played June 18–21, 2015 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, southwest of Tacoma on the shore of Puget Sound. Jordan Spieth won his first U.S. Open and consecutive major titles, one stroke ahead of runners-up Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. This was the first U.S. Open televised by Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports, which was the beginning of a 12-year contract with the United States Golf Association.
Spieth, age 21, became the youngest U.S. Open champion in 92 years, since Bobby Jones in 1923. Also the reigning Masters champion, Spieth is the youngest to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year, passing Tiger Woods, who won both in 2002 at age 26. Others to win the first two majors of the year were Craig Wood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, 1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), and Jack Nicklaus (1972).
This was the first U.S. Open played in the Pacific Northwest and the third major played in the state of Washington, which hosted the PGA Championship in 1944 and 1998.

Louis Oosthuizen again had the low round of the day, 66 (−4), moving him into a tie for 5th place. Despite suffering from vertigo Jason Day scored 68 (−2), the second lowest round of the day.
The 1st hole was set as a 499-yard par-4 and the 18th hole as 577-yard par-5, with the total yardage at 7,637. The scoring average for the field was 73.13 (+3.13) and only 6 players had under-par rounds.

Four players began the final round tied for the lead for the first time at the U.S. Open since 1973. In the final pairing with Jason Day at 3 pm PDT, Dustin Johnson recorded two birdies on the front nine to take sole possession of the lead, then lost it with bogeys on three out of four holes to begin the back nine. In the penultimate pairing, Jordan Spieth and Branden Grace both birdied the par-4 12th to tie, but Grace fell from contention on the 16th after his drive went out of bounds and he made double bogey. Spieth holed a 25-foot (8 m) birdie putt at the 16th to open up a three-stroke lead, but then three-putted for double bogey on the par-3 17th to fall into a tie with Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen began the round three shots off the lead and quickly dropped further behind with three consecutive bogeys on the front-nine. Beginning at the 12th, however, Oosthuizen birdied six out of his last seven holes to tie Spieth. At the par-5 18th, Spieth hit the green in two and proceeded to two-putt for birdie. Johnson recovered from his bogey streak with a birdie at the 17th, then also found the 18th green in two. Faced with a 12-foot (3.7 m) eagle putt to win the championship, Johnson's attempt rolled three feet (0.9 m) past the hole, then missed his birdie putt to tie. Expecting a Monday playoff, Spieth suddenly gained a one-stroke victory for his second consecutive major title.
With the win, Spieth became the sixth to win both The Masters and U.S. Open in the same year and the first since Tiger Woods in 2002. He also became the first to win two majors before the age of 22 since Gene Sarazen in 1922, and the youngest U.S. Open champion since Bobby Jones in 1923. After opening with a round of 77 (+7), Oosthuizen shot 199 over his last three rounds, tying the U.S. Open record for lowest 54-hole score. His score of 29 on the back-nine also tied a tournament record.
The first hole was set as a par-4 at 443 yards (405 m) and the 18th hole as a par-5 at 601 yards (550 m), with the total at 7,384 yards (6,752 m). The scoring average for the field was 71.29 (+1.29) and 22 players had under-par rounds. Adam Scott had the low round of the championship, a 6-under-par 64 to tie for fourth.

U.S. Open 2016: Shane Lowry leads, Jason Day on the move
OAKMONT, Pennsylvania -- Do they have Turnpikes in Ireland? There's something about the Pennsylvania Turnpike that connects Shane Lowry with his inner golf soul.
The burly, bearded Irishman whose only PGA Tour victory was last year at the Bridgestone Invitational is in a position to win the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, which is cut in half by I-76, the same highway that is around the corner from Firestone Country Club.
As light faded over the Allegheny Mountains on Saturday, Lowry held the provisional lead at 5 under par, two strokes ahead of tournament surprise Andrew Landry and three up on second-round leader Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. All were on the back nine of the third round when it was suspended by darkness.
Lowry was 3-under through the 15 holes in the third round. Landry was even through 13 holes.
Westwood was 1-under on the round and had three holes left to play. Johnson, who was sharp in the second round completed earlier in the day, began with a birdie, but put his tee shot on No. 2 into a concession stand. He scrambled for a par, and struggled on the greens the rest of the day. His round was two-over through 13 holes.
Branden Grace and Jason Day made the biggest moves Saturday. Both shot 66, the best third-round score thus far. Grace was 1-under and Day was tied for eighth at 1-over with Zach Johnson.
None of the top seven has ever won a major.
The third and fourth rounds are expected to be completed Sunday under sunny skies, in a tournament that has needed all weekend to catch up from a Thursday downpour.
For Lowery, this week has a familiar feel. As a World Golf Championship event, Bridgestone features an exclusive field, a big purse and a lot of pressure. Winning there could help Lowry here.
"It (winning Bridgestone) means a lot, because I beat a field of this quality already,'' Lowry said. "So, there's no reason I can't go out and do it again tomorrow.''
Lowry will be back in Akron in two weeks for the Bridgestone Invitational, which was moved up from its normal August date because the Olympics compressed this year's PGA Tour schedule. The new Bridgestone date forced Lowry to make a tough choice: Play in Europe and gather points toward Ryder Cup qualification, or go to Bridgestone, which this year does not offer Ryder Cup points.
Lowry's short game, which created some memorable, tree-climbing shots last year at Firestone, was in fine form Saturday, though with fewer theatrics. But at Oakmont, accuracy off the tee is key, and he leads the tournament with fairways hit -- 90 percent.
He overcame a penalty in the second round earlier in the day. Lowry called a one-stroke penalty on himself after his ball moved when he addressed on the 16th green. He was facing a 30-foot putt.
Landry, a 28-year-old qualifier from Texas, continues to be one of the biggest stories of the week. He's ranked 624th in the world and told his father before the tournament he would win the U.S. Open. The final round is on Father's Day.
"I think I did a really good job out there. No nerves, very comfortable,'' Landry said.
Day and Zach Johnson are the only former major tournament winners in the top 10.
Cleveland native Jason Dunfer moved into position for a top-10 finish with a 68 that had him 2-over.
The third round is to resume at 7 a.m. Sunday with the final round to follow.
Day had a great afternoon on greens, with birdies on four of his first five holes after starting on No. 10, and his chip-in for eagle on No. 4 put him in contention.
Day and Grace get to sleep in Sunday while the leaders are in for another long day.
"So, they're going to be waking up around 5:00, play the rest of their holes. It's going to be warm tomorrow and then have to come back and play 18 holes in the afternoon,'' Day said.
"That may -- obviously, it wouldn't, or it shouldn't, but it may have it physically and mentally a little bit tougher on those guys that have to come back and finish in the a.m.''
Lowry didn't mind knocking off before finishing Saturday. He teed off at 8:50 a.m.
"It's been a long day,'' Lowry said. "I was getting tired toward the end. I wasn't hitting any bad shots or anything. I was making good decisions and I was hitting good shots.
"Yeah, I mean, if I had to play another four holes, it would have been quite difficult."
The third round did not begin until 3 p.m. Saturday.
A key moment soon followed when Johnson stumbled into a double-bogey on 4 at the same time Westwood holed an eagle shot next door on 5.
"I felt like I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in the hole, just burning the edges. A few lip-outs,'' Johnson said.
Garcia skipped the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago to hone in on the Open. He and Westwood are both European Tour stars, and neither has won a major.
Closing has been a issue for Garcia.

Captain Hook
Captain James Hook is a fictional character, the antagonist of J. M. Barrie's play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up and its various adaptations, in which he is Peter Pan's archenemy. The character is a pirate captain of the brig Jolly Roger; Barrie describes him as Blackbeard's former bo'sun. His two principal fears are the sight of his own blood (supposedly an unnatural colour) and the crocodile who pursues him after eating the hand cut off by Pan. An iron hook replaced his severed hand, which gave the pirate his name. After getting a taste of Hook, the crocodile pursues him relentlessly, but the ticking clock it has swallowed warns Hook of its presence.
Creation of the character
Hook did not appear in early drafts of the play, wherein the capricious and coercive Peter Pan was closest to a "villain", but was created for a front-cloth scene depicting the children's journey home. Later, Barrie expanded the scene, on the premise that children were fascinated by pirates, and expanded the role of the captain as the play developed. The character was originally cast to be played by Dorothea Baird, the actress playing Mary Darling, but Gerald du Maurier, already playing George Darling (and the brother of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies), persuaded Barrie to let him take the additional role instead, a casting tradition since replicated in many stage and film productions of the Peter Pan story.

OAKMONT, Pa. — As Dustin Johnson teed off in the final round of the 116th United States Open, his mind-set was simple. He would ignore the ghosts of majors past. Forget about Shane Lowry’s four-stroke lead. Ignore top-ranked Jason Day and all the other players giving chase at Oakmont Country Club. “It’s just me and the course,” he told himself. But on the way to victory Sunday, it would become more complicated for Johnson, seemingly one of the most uncomplicated athletes to roam a golf course. Jordan Spieth, the defending champion, described Johnson this month as “a freak golf athlete,” and it is true. His opening drive of the fourth round traveled 378 yards. Enough said. Aside from being known as a freak athlete, Johnson had a reputation for losing majors in freaky fashion. He lost the 2015 United States Open to Spieth when he three-putted the 72nd hole from 12 feet. He lost the 2010 tournament with a final-round 82 that was like a summons server, materializing out of nowhere. Johnson held the lead at the halfway point of last year’s British Open, but finished tied for 49th when he could not break par in the final two rounds. He lost the 2010 P.G.A. Championship when he grounded his club in a bunker on the 72nd hole and incurred a penalty that kept him out of a playoff, won by Martin Kaymer. After his brain cramp at the P.G.A. Championship, Johnson drew criticism for not summoning a rules official to assess if the spot where his ball had come to rest was in one of the hundreds of bunkers that pockmark Whistling Straits. Fast-forward six years to Sunday, when Johnson saw his ball move on the fifth green. He did not believe he had caused the ball to oscillate, but to be on the safe side, he called a rules official. After a brief discussion, the official determined that no infraction had occurred, and Johnson stepped up and made the par putt to remain one under for the round and four under for the tournament. Johnson made the turn in two-under 33. On the 12th tee, he was approached by United States Golf Association officials, who explained that a video review had indicated that he might have caused the ball to move in the process of placing his putter behind it at address. He was told that he most likely would be assessed a one-stroke penalty after his round. At that moment, Johnson was two strokes clear of the field, but it was not just him and the course anymore. It was him and the course and the U.S.G.A. rules committee and his 0-for-28 record in the majors. There were enough factors to clog his head and cloud his thinking. But Johnson kept calm. Despite a bogey at the 14th hole, he played the final seven holes in even par, making clutch par putts at Nos. 16 and 17 and a birdie at the 18th, which rendered the one-stroke penalty a moot point. Johnson finished four under par at 276, three strokes ahead of Jim Furyk, Scott Piercy and Lowry. In the final round at Chambers Bay last year, Johnson had hit two of his best shots of the week on the 18th hole, only to miss a 12-foot putt for eagle to win and three-footer for a birdie that would have forced an 18-hole playoff with Spieth. On Sunday, with the crowd lining the 18th hole chanting his initials, Johnson hit two of his best shots of the week and made the five-foot putt for birdie to finish with a 69 (with the penalty). Lowry and Piercy were the last two players with a chance to pass Johnson, but Piercy played the back nine in one over for a 69, and Lowry bogeyed three of the last five holes en route to a 76. Johnson, Furyk, Piercy and Lowry were the only players to break par. Sergio García (70) and Branden Grace (71) tied for fifth at even-par 280. There was no near miss this year. No rimmed-out putt. No blown opportunity. Even despite some unusual circumstances, the 31-year-old was unflappable and brought home his first elusive major championship victory. Johnson has long been considered the best player without a major championship. Much of that has been to his own doing as he's faltered in key moments. Johnson had a short par putt to force a playoff at the US Open last year only to miss and add another near miss to his résumé. There were questions of whether he would ever be able to break through and win the big one. Those questions are now a forgotten thing of the past. Johnson answered every question on Sunday. He opened the final round trailing Shane Lowry by four shots, but mounted an impressive charge. Then came the weirdness. Prior to grounding his club on a par putt on No. 5, Johnson's ball appeared to move. He asked a rules official and was cleared of any wrong doing. He made the putt and continued his round. Then as he stood on the No. 12 tee, he was alerted that the USGA was going to review the situation and he could be accessed a penalty stroke. He could have been crumbled by the distraction. Instead, he eliminated any possibility of it impacting the outcome. Johnson bogeyed just one hole on Sunday and this time on No. 18 he made the putt. Johnson rolled in a birdie on his 72nd hole to improve to 5-under and eliminate any doubt. The USGA eventually ruled that Johnson had committed a penalty. He was assessed a one-stroke penalty to finish at 4-under. Had he not closed the way he did, this could have been another career-defining moment of failure. Instead, Johnson wrote his own script. Johnson has never been among the more emotional players on tour, but it was obvious how much this meant. He let out a fist pump as the birdie dropped before hugging his brother and caddie on the green. He was then greeted by his son and fiancée. It was finally here, the moment he came so close to so many times only to let slip through. It was a winding path, but Dustin Johnson is now a major champion. He claimed the elusive US Open that he's been so close to for so long and he did it at one of the great courses in golf. There will always be questions of what if with Johnson's major championship career, but there is no questioning how exceptional he played this week and if he deserves his place among the major champions. -

Final round Sunday, June 21, 2015 Four players began the final round tied for the lead for the first time at the U.S. Open since 1973. In the final pairing with Jason Day at 3 pm PDT, Dustin Johnson recorded two birdies on the front nine to take sole possession of the lead, then lost it with bogeys on three out of four holes to begin the back nine. U.S. Open 2016: Shane Lowry leads, Jason Day on the move OAKMONT, Pennsylvania -- Do they have Turnpikes in Ireland? There's something about the Pennsylvania Turnpike that connects Shane Lowry with his inner golf soul. The burly, bearded Irishman whose only PGA Tour victory was last year at the Bridgestone Invitational is in a position to win the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, which is cut in half by I-76, the same highway that is around the corner from Firestone Country Club. As light faded over the Allegheny Mountains on Saturday, Lowry held the provisional lead at 5 under par, two strokes ahead of tournament surprise Andrew Landry and three up on second-round leader Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. All were on the back nine of the third round when it was suspended by darkness. Lowry was 3-under through the 15 holes in the third round. Landry was even through 13 holes. Westwood was 1-under on the round and had three holes left to play. Johnson, who was sharp in the second round completed earlier in the day, began with a birdie, but put his tee shot on No. 2 into a concession stand. He scrambled for a par, and struggled on the greens the rest of the day. His round was two-over through 13 holes. Branden Grace and Jason Day made the biggest moves Saturday. Both shot 66, the best third-round score thus far. Grace was 1-under and Day was tied for eighth at 1-over with Zach Johnson. None of the top seven has ever won a major. The third and fourth rounds are expected to be completed Sunday under sunny skies, in a tournament that has needed all weekend to catch up from a Thursday downpour. For Lowery, this week has a familiar feel. As a World Golf Championship event, Bridgestone features an exclusive field, a big purse and a lot of pressure. Winning there could help Lowry here. "It (winning Bridgestone) means a lot, because I beat a field of this quality already,'' Lowry said. "So, there's no reason I can't go out and do it again tomorrow.'' Lowry will be back in Akron in two weeks for the Bridgestone Invitational, which was moved up from its normal August date because the Olympics compressed this year's PGA Tour schedule. The new Bridgestone date forced Lowry to make a tough choice: Play in Europe and gather points toward Ryder Cup qualification, or go to Bridgestone, which this year does not offer Ryder Cup points. Lowry's short game, which created some memorable, tree-climbing shots last year at Firestone, was in fine form Saturday, though with fewer theatrics. But at Oakmont, accuracy off the tee is key, and he leads the tournament with fairways hit -- 90 percent. He overcame a penalty in the second round earlier in the day. It's going to be warm tomorrow and then have to come back and play 18 holes in the afternoon,'' Day said. "That may -- obviously, it wouldn't, or it shouldn't, but it may have it physically and mentally a little bit tougher on those guys that have to come back and finish in the a.m.'' Lowry didn't mind knocking off before finishing Saturday. He teed off at 8:50 a.m. "It's been a long day,'' Lowry said. "I was getting tired toward the end. I wasn't hitting any bad shots or anything. The Open was a frustrating tournament for the 'Big Four' with only Rory McIlory finishing tied fifth with a final round of 67 and ending on a total of 280.
US Open champion and world No 2 Dustin Johnson finish two strokes behind (282) McIlroy, while world No 1 Jason Day finishing 10th on 285.
Twenty-two-year-old Jordan Spieth, who almost didn't make the cut, scored 68 in the final round to end with a total of 286.
4. Andrew 'Beef' Johnston
Andrew Johnston, who made his debut at the Open, was greeted on every putt with a loud reverberated 'Beeeef' chant from the Scottish crowd as ended the final round on 73 with a total of 281.

This was the first Open Championship with live domestic television coverage on Sky Sports, after it had been shown on the BBC from 1955 to 2015.[3] BBC TV coverage was a two-hour highlights programme each evening.[4] The Open Championship was covered by Group B of the Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events which meant that highlights must be made available to all television viewers, particularly those who do not have subscription television.[5]
In the United States, it was the first Open Championship to be televised by NBC (Golf Channel's parent network), after 55 years of being televised in the U.S. by ESPN/ABC; Golf Channel broadcast the first and second rounds of the tournament, marking the first time that Golf Channel had coverage of a men's major championship. But on the way to victory Sunday, it would become more complicated for Johnson, seemingly one of the most uncomplicated athletes to roam a golf course. Jordan Spieth, the defending champion, described Johnson this month as “a freak golf athlete,” and it is true. His opening drive of the fourth round traveled 378 yards. Enough said.
Aside from being known as a freak athlete, Johnson had a reputation for losing majors in freaky fashion. He lost the 2015 United States Open to Spieth when he three-putted the 72nd hole from 12 feet. He lost the 2010 tournament with a final-round 82 that was like a summons server, materializing out of nowhere.
Johnson held the lead at the halfway point of last year’s British Open, but finished tied for 49th when he could not break par in the final two rounds. He lost the 2010 P.G.A. Championship when he grounded his club in a bunker on the 72nd hole and incurred a penalty that kept him out of a playoff, won by Martin Kaymer.
After his brain cramp at the P.G.A. Championship, Johnson drew criticism for not summoning a rules official to assess if the spot where his ball had come to rest was in one of the hundreds of bunkers that pockmark Whistling Straits.
Fast-forward six years to Sunday, when Johnson saw his ball move on the fifth green. He did not believe he had caused the ball to oscillate, but to be on the safe side, he called a rules official. After a brief discussion, the official determined that no infraction had occurred, and Johnson stepped up and made the par putt to remain one under for the round and four under for the tournament.
Johnson made the turn in two-under 33. On the 12th tee, he was approached by United States Golf Association officials, who explained that a video review had indicated that he might have caused the ball to move in the process of placing his putter behind it at address. He was told that he most likely would be assessed a one-stroke penalty after his round.
At that moment, Johnson was two strokes clear of the field, but it was not just him and the course anymore. It was him and the course and the U.S.G.A. rules committee and his 0-for-28 record in the majors. There were enough factors to clog his head and cloud his thinking.
But Johnson kept calm. Despite a bogey at the 14th hole, he played the final seven holes in even par, making clutch par putts at Nos. 16 and 17 and a birdie at the 18th, which rendered the one-stroke penalty a moot point.

Johnson answered every question on Sunday. He opened the final round trailing Shane Lowry by four shots, but mounted an impressive charge. Then came the weirdness. Ater six near misses in major championships, each seemingly more excruciating than the last, Dustin Johnson is finally a major champion. There was no near miss this year. No rimmed-out putt. No blown opportunity. Even despite some unusual circumstances, the 31-year-old was unflappable and brought home his first elusive major championship victory.
Johnson has long been considered the best player without a major championship. Much of that has been to his own doing as he's faltered in key moments. Johnson had a short par putt to force a playoff at the US Open last year only to miss and add another near miss to his résumé. There were questions of whether he would ever be able to break through and win the big one.
Those questions are now a forgotten thing of the past.
Johnson answered every question on Sunday. He opened the final round trailing Shane Lowry by four shots, but mounted an impressive charge. Then came the weirdness. Prior to grounding his club on a par putt on No. 5, Johnson's ball appeared to move. He asked a rules official and was cleared of any wrong doing. He made the putt and continued his round. Jordan Spieth won his first U.S. Open and consecutive major titles, one stroke ahead of runners-up Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. This was the first U.S. Open televised by Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports, which was the beginning of a 12-year contract with the United States Golf Association.
Spieth, age 21, became the youngest U.S. Open champion in 92 years, since Bobby Jones in 1923. Also the reigning Masters champion, Spieth is the youngest to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year, passing Tiger Woods, who won both in 2002 at age 26. Others to win the first two majors of the year were Craig Wood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, 1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), and Jack Nicklaus (1972).
This was the first U.S. Open played in the Pacific Northwest and the third major played in the state of Washington, which hosted the PGA Championship in 1944 and 1998.

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania -- Do they have Turnpikes in Ireland? There's something about the Pennsylvania Turnpike that connects Shane Lowry with his inner golf soul.
The burly, bearded Irishman whose only PGA Tour victory was last year at the Bridgestone Invitational is in a position to win the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, which is cut in half by I-76, the same highway that is around the corner from Firestone Country Club.
As light faded over the Allegheny Mountains on Saturday, Lowry held the provisional lead at 5 under par, two strokes ahead of tournament surprise Andrew Landry and three up on second-round leader Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. All were on the back nine of the third round when it was suspended by darkness.
Lowry was 3-under through the 15 holes in the third round. Landry was even through 13 holes.
Westwood was 1-under on the round and had three holes left to play. Johnson, who was sharp in the second round completed earlier in the day, began with a birdie, but put his tee shot on No. 2 into a concession stand. He scrambled for a par, and struggled on the greens the rest of the day. His round was two-over through 13 holes.
Branden Grace and Jason Day made the biggest moves Saturday. Both shot 66, the best third-round score thus far. Grace was 1-under and Day was tied for eighth at 1-over with Zach Johnson.
None of the top seven has ever won a major.
The third and fourth rounds are expected to be completed Sunday under sunny skies, in a tournament that has needed all weekend to catch up from a Thursday downpour.
For Lowery, this week has a familiar feel. As a World Golf Championship event, Bridgestone features an exclusive field, a big purse and a lot of pressure. Winning there could help Lowry here.
"It (winning Bridgestone) means a lot, because I beat a field of this quality already,'' Lowry said. "So, there's no reason I can't go out and do it again tomorrow.''
Lowry will be back in Akron in two weeks for the Bridgestone Invitational, which was moved up from its normal August date because the Olympics compressed this year's PGA Tour schedule. The new Bridgestone date forced Lowry to make a tough choice: Play in Europe and gather points toward Ryder Cup qualification, or go to Bridgestone, which this year does not offer Ryder Cup points.
Lowry's short game, which created some memorable, tree-climbing shots last year at Firestone, was in fine form Saturday, though with fewer theatrics. But at Oakmont, accuracy off the tee is key, and he leads the tournament with fairways hit -- 90 percent.
He overcame a penalty in the second round earlier in the day. Lowry called a one-stroke penalty on himself after his ball moved when he addressed on the 16th green. He was facing a 30-foot putt.
Landry, a 28-year-old qualifier from Texas, continues to be one of the biggest stories of the week. He's ranked 624th in the world and told his father before the tournament he would win the U.S. Open. The final round is on Father's Day.
"I think I did a really good job out there. No nerves, very comfortable,'' Landry said.
Day and Zach Johnson are the only former major tournament winners in the top 10.
Cleveland native Jason Dunfer moved into position for a top-10 finish with a 68 that had him 2-over.
The third round is to resume at 7 a.m. Sunday with the final round to follow.
Day had a great afternoon on greens, with birdies on four of his first five holes after starting on No. 10, and his chip-in for eagle on No. 4 put him in contention.
Day and Grace get to sleep in Sunday while the leaders are in for another long day.
"So, they're going to be waking up around 5:00, play the rest of their holes. It's going to be warm tomorrow and then have to come back and play 18 holes in the afternoon,'' Day said.
"That may -- obviously, it wouldn't, or it shouldn't, but it may have it physically and mentally a little bit tougher on those guys that have to come back and finish in the a.m.''
Lowry didn't mind knocking off before finishing Saturday. He teed off at 8:50 a.m.
"It's been a long day,'' Lowry said. "I was getting tired toward the end. I wasn't hitting any bad shots or anything. I was making good decisions and I was hitting good shots.
"Yeah, I mean, if I had to play another four holes, it would have been quite difficult."
The third round did not begin until 3 p.m. Saturday.
A key moment soon followed when Johnson stumbled into a double-bogey on 4 at the same time Westwood holed an eagle shot next door on 5.
"I felt like I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in the hole, just burning the edges. A few lip-outs,'' Johnson said.
Garcia skipped the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago to hone in on the Open. He and Westwood are both European Tour stars, and neither has won a major.
Closing has been a issue for Garcia.

"I felt like I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in the hole, just burning the edges. A few lip-outs,'' Johnson said.
Garcia skipped the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago to hone in on the Open. He and Westwood are both European Tour stars, and neither has won a major.
Closing has been a issue for Garcia.

Rory McIlroy won the Deutsche Bank Championship to claim his first PGA Tour title for 16 months.
The Northern Irishman started six shots behind overnight leader Paul Casey, but seven birdies in a six-under-par 65 saw him finish two shots clear at 15 under.
England's Casey, 39, missed an eagle putt on the final hole at TPC Boston that would have forced a play-off.
It was 27-year-old McIlroy's first tournament win since the Irish Open in May and first PGA title since May 2015.
The victory comes just a week after he changed his putter and putting coach.
"I knew my game was in good shape, I just needed to do something with the putting," said McIlroy. "I found something.
"I still need to keep going with it, it's definitely not the finished article, but it's a big step in the right direction.
"I'm excited with how my game is and what I've found this week, and hopefully I can keep it going for the next couple of tournaments, but ultimately into the Ryder Cup."
The Deutsche Bank Championship is the second of the four that make up the season-ending FedEx Cup.
McIlroy will rise 34 places to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings - and nearer the $10m (£7.52m) prize for the winner - as a result of his victory.
The competition features the top 100 players in the world. The leading 70 after this weekend progress to next week's BMW Championship, where the field will be reduced to 30 for the Tour Championship on 22-25 September.

Also the reigning Masters champion, Spieth is the youngest to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year, passing Tiger Woods, who won both in 2002 at age 26. Others to win the first two majors of the year were Craig Wood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, 1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), and Jack Nicklaus (1972).
This was the first U.S. Open played in the Pacific Northwest and the third major played in the state of Washington, which hosted the PGA Championship in 1944 and 1998.

In the final pairing with Jason Day at 3 pm PDT, Dustin Johnson recorded two birdies on the front nine to take sole possession of the lead, then lost it with bogeys on three out of four holes to begin the back nine. In the penultimate pairing, Jordan Spieth and Branden Grace both birdied the par-4 12th to tie, but Grace fell from contention on the 16th after his drive went out of bounds and he made double bogey. Spieth holed a 25-foot (8 m) birdie putt at the 16th to open up a three-stroke lead, but then three-putted for double bogey on the par-3 17th to fall into a tie with Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen began the round three shots off the lead and quickly dropped further behind with three consecutive bogeys on the front-nine. Beginning at the 12th, however, Oosthuizen birdied six out of his last seven holes to tie Spieth. At the par-5 18th, Spieth hit the green in two and proceeded to two-putt for birdie. Johnson recovered from his bogey streak with a birdie at the 17th, then also found the 18th green in two. Faced with a 12-foot (3.7 m) eagle putt to win the championship, Johnson's attempt rolled three feet (0.9 m) past the hole, then missed his birdie putt to tie. Expecting a Monday playoff, Spieth suddenly gained a one-stroke victory for his second consecutive major title.
With the win, Spieth became the sixth to win both The Masters and U.S. Open in the same year and the first since Tiger Woods in 2002. He also became the first to win two majors before the age of 22 since Gene Sarazen in 1922, and the youngest U.S. Open champion since Bobby Jones in 1923. After opening with a round of 77 (+7), Oosthuizen shot 199 over his last three rounds, tying the U.S. Open record for lowest 54-hole score. His score of 29 on the back-nine also tied a tournament record.
The first hole was set as a par-4 at 443 yards (405 m) and the 18th hole as a par-5 at 601 yards (550 m), with the total at 7,384 yards (6,752 m).
