Young Victorian of the Year 2012

Student Victor Victor.

In 2012, Bachelor of Psychological Studies student Victor Victor was named Young Victorian of the Year while studying for his Diploma of Liberal Arts.

Young Victorians are nominated for the award because of their outstanding community and public service.

Victor was nominated for his work improving the lives of Melbourne's young migrants and refugees. Earlier in 2012, Victor was also awarded the City of Greater Dandenong's Young Achiever award.

Garry Kuan is also a trained violinist

An award-winning Victoria University PhD student with a passion for community service has been named international student of the year by the national body representing Australia's 500,000 overseas students.

Garry Kuan, a Footscray resident who left Malaysia in 2008 to study a PhD in sport psychology at VU, received the award from the Council of International Students Australia (CISA) in Brisbane.

Two-time Sydney City to Surf winner is Male Athlete of Year

Two-time Sydney City to Surf winner Liam Adams

Bachelor of Exercise Science and Human Movement student Liam Adams won Sydney's biggest road running race for the second year in a row finishing the 14-kilometre Sydney City2Surf in 41 minutes 31 seconds - 20 seconds behind his 2011 winning time. A seasoned competitor, he also claimed a silver medal in the prestigious Stanford University Payton Jordan Invitational 10km event in the U.S and represented Australia at the World Half Marathon Championships in Bulgaria finishing 23rd. Among his busy schedule Liam represented the University in cross country at the Southern University Games winning gold and is VU's 2012 Male Athlete of the Year.

Distinguished Alumni Award

Li is a VU MBA graduate

Kevin Qiang Li, an alumnus now living in China, received VU's 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to China–Australia relations. A graduate of VU's Master of Business Administration in 1996, Li has forged strong links between his homeland and Australia as President of the south China region of the Australian Chamber of Commerce. Li is also a successful entrepreneur, his company Kunlun Advertising, is now the largest outdoor media operator in south China.

Sport psychologist wins inaugural student award

Sport psychology masters graduate Natalie Kyan was awarded the inaugural Australian Psychological Society College of Sport and Exercise Psychologists Student Award. She won the award for achieving a high level of academic and practical work.

The APS College of Sport and Exercise Psychologists Student Award was established to recognise the significant role that VU Professor Tony Morris has played in the development of both the research and applied fields of sport and exercise psychology in Australia.

Singapore alumnus wins Australian Alumni Award

Kim Swee at the ceremony

In March 2012, VU's Singapore Alumni Chapter President Mr Kim Swee Seah, was one of five Distinguished Australian Alumni Award recipients announced at the Distinguished Alumni Networking Night.

The award was announced by Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, His Excellency Mr Doug Chester. The awards are chosen on very strict criteria, and Kim Swee was the only awardee from a Victorian university.

Staff and alumnus a Living Legend

Elleni Bered-Samuel, a Living Legend

VU graduate and staff member Elleni Bereded-Samuel was named one of the 100 most influential African Australians for her contribution to education, training, employment and social inclusion. Recognised as a Living Legend, Bereded-Samuel has worked with several migrant and refugee groups and changed many people's lives in the process.
