Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged. He saw an image comprised of various materials, in the form of a man. Nebuchadnezzar was the head of gold, followed by the breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, two legs of iron, and finally two feet [10 toes] made from a brittle mixture of iron and clay. A stone cut out from a mountain without hands then struck the image on its brittle feet, and destroyed the gold, silver, brass, iron and clay. A whirlwind carried them all away, and the stone grew into a mountain which filled the earth and will never pass away as the previous kings and kingdoms passed away. This is interpreted as the establishment of God’s eternal Kingdom on earth (Dan. 2:44). The stone is a fairly common symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ps. 118:22 cp. Mt. 21:42-44; Acts 4:11; Is. 8:14; 28:16; Rom. 9:32,33; Eph. 2:20; 1 Pet. 2:4,6-8), the Messiah of Israel (Gen. 49:24; Zech. 3:9; 4:7,10), the begotten Son of God, cut out without human hands. Bible prophecy can be understood on a number of levels. It would be legitimate to see these four empires as referring to the succession of kingdoms which had dominion over “all the earth”. We must remember that the Bible was written in Hebrew, Greek and Chaldee. We read through the mask of translation. The Hebrew word and concept of eretz, translated “the earth”, can refer either to the whole planet, or to the land promised to Abraham, between the Nile and the Euphrates. The word is used in modern Hebrew to refer to eretz Israel, the state of Israel. After Babylon’s domination of the land, there followed the Medo-Persian empire (breast and arms of silver), then the Greeks (belly and thighs of brass), followed by the Roman empire, divided as it was into Western and Eastern parts, symbolized by the two iron legs. Out of this arose the two feet with their ten toes. But after the Roman empire, the people of Israel were exiled from their land, only becoming a nation again in 1948. The two feet with their ten toes would then represent a brief period of mixed domination of the land, under a confederacy of ten groups broadly divided into two camps. I say ‘brief’ because in proportion to the size of the image, the feet are not very large. The proportions of the different parts of the body match the length of time over which the various empires dominated Israel. Thus Babylon dominated Judah for 70 years, and they are represented by the head, which is not a large part of the human body. The prophecy of Daniel goes further to provide more details of this series of empires. Daniel 7 describes the same succession in terms of four beasts, which also represent the same empires as the metals in the image of Daniel chapter 2. The fourth beast has ten horns, corresponding to the ten toes of Daniel’s image; and out of them, one particular horn is prominent. This beast becomes the prototype for the beasts we encounter in the book of Revelation, who likewise dominate God’s people and will be destroyed by Christ’s return. In a video message posted online, the men told the 47-year-old's captors that killing him would be against Islamic law. Mr Henning, a taxi driver from Salford, was delivering aid in Syria when he was captured in December near the town of al Dana. A video released on Thursday showed British journalist John Cantlie who is also believed to be held by IS. In the footage Mr Cantlie, who is dressed in orange and sitting behind a desk, says he wants "to convey some facts" about the conflict in the Middle East..

The French foreign ministry released a statement earlier this week referencing the Islamic State group as "Daesh." The new moniker is a transliteration of an acronym of the group's Arabic name "al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham. It is also similar to the arabic word that means "to trample." France's foreign minister Laurent Fabius explained that he views the organization as "a terrorist group, not a state." “I do not recommend using the term Islamic State because it blurs the lines between Islam, Muslims and Islamists. The Arabs call it ‘Daesh,’ and I will be calling them the ‘Daesh cutthroats,'" Fabius said, according to France 24. The Associated Press reported that the extremist group finds the term disrespectful. Many media organizations have adopted the term "Islamic State," including The Huffington Post. But Secretary of State John Kerry aligns with the French on this issue. At a hearing on Thursday, Kerry brought a new term to the table: the "enemy of Islam." "I call them the 'enemy of Islam' because that's what I think they are, and they certainly don't represent a state even though they try to claim to," Kerry said. It doesn't end there. Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan addresses members of parliament from his ruling AK Party during a meeting at the Turkish parliament in Ankara Tayyip Erdogan said the hostages were freed after 'intense efforts' "After intense efforts that lasted days and weeks, in the early hours, our citizens were handed over to us and we brought them back to our country," he added. The hostages, including diplomatic staff, soldiers and children, were taken from the Turkish consulate in Mosul in Iraq on June 11 after the city was overrun by Islamic State (IS) fighters. Mr Davutoglu did not provide further details on the circumstances of their release but added: "They have crossed into Turkey and I am on my way to see them. From my heart, I thank the families who maintained their dignity." Seizure of the hostages put Turkey in a difficult position as a summit of 30 countries met in Paris last week to co-ordinate their response to the IS threat. The nations agreed to "support the Iraqi government by any means necessary - including military assistance". Turkey resisted joining the coalition and the United States was careful not to push Ankara too hard as it worked to free the hostages.

After gaining control over Syria, the Islamic State terrorist group is now prohibiting thousands of children in the country from learning mathematics or social studies based on their newly released diktats. According to a report from CNN, Syrian children will no longer have the chance to learn about democracy and election as well as sports, and will instead be taught the radical teachings of the jihadists. Posters and fliers posted on street poles and billboards indicate the new educational demands and emphasize that anyone who disobeys "will be punished." It also stated that teachers will be given alternative courses to teach the children and that phrases like the 'Syrian Arab Republic' would no longer be used and should be replaced by 'Islamic State.' Ideologies and nationalistic virtues are also prohibited in the new education system and will be replaced with teachings which emphasize "the belonging to Islam ... and to denounce infidelity and infidels." Aside from this, books should no longer bear any reference to evolution and should indicate that laws of chemistry and physics are subject to "Allah's rules and laws." The directive concluded with a vehement warning stressing that obeying it is 'obligatory' and that "all violators will be punished." To make matters worse, the jihadist group was reported to have killed at least 200 people on Tuesday alone. The estimated number of casualties has risen to nearly 200,000 in the conflict between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's administration and the Sunni rebels who seek to end over 40 years of al-Assad's family's reign. For the past few weeks, ISIS militants have also made their opinion of the West clear after beheading two Americans and one British national while threatening another prisoner from the United Kingdom. However, ISIS executions have prompted the West to strike back as U.S. President Barack Obama vows to eliminate the terrorist group no matter what.

A former US ambassador to Turkey, Francis Ricciardone, told a media call in Washington last week, according to Reuters, that Turkey had cooperated with groups such as Al-Qaeda's Syrian branch al Nusra Front and the Islamic state. Kurds, academic experts and the Syrian opposition agree that Syrians, Turks (estimated to number 3,000), and foreign fighters (especially Saudis. CNN even broadcast a video on "The secret jihadi smuggling route through Turkey." First, ISIS is willing to accept Turkish support even while seeing the Islamist prime minister and his countrymen as kafirs (infidels) who need to be shown true Islam. 'Turkish spokesperson. Analyst: Islamic State Propaganda Seeks to Draw West to Battle

As a U.S.-led coalition coordinates strategy against the Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, the group’s tech-savvy public relations machine grabs headlines with shocking videos and other propaganda. But some regional analysts say while the Islamic State warns the coalition to stay away, its real goal is to draw the West into battle. In a video released Thursday, British journalist John Cantlie speaks like a newscaster, saying he is a prisoner of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS and ISIL. Cantlie was kidnapped in Syria two years ago while traveling with James Foley, an American reporter. The militants have beheaded Foley, another American journalist and a British aid worker. In the video, which looks professionally shot, Cantlie wears orange like the other men wore when they were killed. “Maybe I will live, and maybe I will die but I want to take this opportunity to convey some facts that you can verify," he said. "Facts that, if you contemplate, might help preserving lives.” Cantlie warns Western governments against invading Iraq, after their failure to secure Iraq and Afghanistan despite long wars. Another militant video released this week looks like a Hollywood movie preview - with blasts and threats of attacks. The final explosion is followed by a title card that says “Flames of War: Fighting has Just Begun” followed by “coming soon.” But some regional analysts say that while the Islamic State warns the West against attacking, what it really wants is for the West to fight. Daniel Wagner, head of the security firm Country Risk Solutions, says "their ultimate objective is to ensure that the U.S. and the West will engage them on the battlefield." "That’s what they ultimately want," he said. "It will also help them in their recruiting process and the U.S. and the West are doing exactly what it appears that ISIS wants them to do.” He says Western involvement will likely draw even more foreigners to join the Islamic State’s battle against what it calls “crusaders,” which basically means anyone who doesn’t support its extremist version of Islamic law. But Wagner adds, in the end, the Islamic State might not get the fight it wants. “I do find myself wondering whether this is the type of engagement they’ll want however," he said. "As long as it's being done by the air with drones and planes, I don’t know how ISIS can say that it’s actively engaging the U.S. on the battlefield.” As people flee Islamic State territories, some say that destroying the group is the only way to save the region and prevent terrorism from spreading. Over lunch in Lebanon, 25-year-old Firas describes what is happening in his hometown in Syria. The Islamic State has taken over most of the province, but other rebel groups still fight in the city. He says the state no longer functions because government workers all fled. Recently, at a checkpoint, soldiers asked three of his friends which group they support, he says. The friends asked the soldiers who they were with. The soldiers said they were from the Free Syrian Army rebel group. The young men, who backed no groups, lied and said they liked the Free Syrian Army the best. But Firas says the soldiers were actually from the Islamic State. The men were killed on the spot.
