Work Integrated Learning

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is an term used for a variety of approaches and strategies that help you connect what you learn at university, with the workplace and the wider community. WIL can mean different things to different students – you may be required to do a placement, clinical practicum, field work or simulation.

However, the one thing all students have in common doing WIL is the need to be prepared to get the most of your experience and to make the best of opportunities presented. This just may be the start of your career.

International student resources

Australian based employers require you to have the legal right to work in Australia. This will require you to have either Australian citizenship or permanent residency (PR) status. The specific eligibility requirements will often vary between individual employers, therefore if you do not have your permanent residency (PR), it's important to check your eligibility to apply.

To be eligible to apply for most visas under the Australian Government's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, you need 12 months' post-qualification work experience and a high level of English language ability.

For more information on gaining permanent residency and all aspects of visa requirements for Australia visit the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Employer connections

Our partnerships with employers in a range of businesses, industries and community organisations provide opportunities for you to obtain work experience, complete part of your learning in the workplace or get a job.

Employers mentor students, advertise job vacancies and recruit students and graduates through the VU employment register. Our relationships with employers provide opportunities for you to establish networks and enhance your career.
