The "Little Solemn Mass" strikingly stands out from among the works of the late years of Rossini's life. Rossini called his little composition the "last mortal sin of my old age", emphasizing that eye-winking, completely ironic distance that speaks out of the postscript addressed to the Almighty, with which the last page of the score closes: "Good God, behold completed this poor little Mass... Is it indeed music for the blest ("musique sacrée") that I have just written or just some blessed music ("sacrée musique")?" The play of these lines on the suggestive double meaning of the word "sacré", give eloquent testimony to the ambivalence that Rossini saw even in the style of writing of his church music. The title is also contradictory: the Mass is at the same time "petite" (because of its chamber music format) and "solennelle" (in view of its length and entirely weighty bearing). The music itself seems completely unmannered in style, more classicist than belcanto, though admirers of Rossini's art are bound to single out some operatic pieces. Surprisingly, there is a sense in which Rossini's continuously extraordinary musical facility is one of his weaknesses. He once remarked: "Show me a laundry list and I will set it to music!". To some extent, this is what he has done in the "Messe". Of course, there are many sections which beautifully reflect the words, but in other places one feels that Rossini has paid little regard to the essential meaning and form of the text. Yet at no point in the work does the music become remotely dull or routine. Such was Rossini's genius that even when the spirit of the music seems to depart from the spirit of the text one can't help but be captivated by the beautiful melodies and sheer joie-de-vivre of the piece. As he himself said: "delight must be the basis and aim of this art" - and that is what he has achieved: a work not of profound religious insight, but one that is a delightful, life-enhancing musical experience. Rossini originally specified twelve singers in all, with the soloists doubling the SATB chorus, and scored it for two pianos and harmonium. This version is considered by most the authentic and the only true one. The singular scoring for soloists, choir and yet quite compelling accompaniment by two pianos and harmonium is partially due to the occasion for which the piece was composed. Its first performance was at the dedication (16 March 1864) of the private chapel in the hôtel of Louise, Comtesse de Pillet-Will, to whom Rossini dedicated this refined and elegant piece which avoids the sentimental opulence of most contemporary liturgical works, such as those by Charles Gounod.
And yet, in 1867, Rossini himself revised the work for orchestra and chorus, for fear that someone else might accomplish the task if he did not. The performance of this version took place only on the 28th of February, 1869, at the Theatre-Italien of Paris, after the composer's death. I'm going with the latter version for many reasons, chief amongst them being my preference of a full orchestra and chorus over a piano accompaniment.
As in the previous pieces, I'm providing the whole structure of the piece, while only noting the sections I'm posting. Also I have to mention that I'm using (both in the above and following texts) sections from John Bawden's, the musical director for Fareham Philaharmonic Choir, excellent notes on the work for a scholar overview of the work.

Rossini is generally perceived as an operatic composer, and thus, his sacred works are sometimes perceived as lacking in the light of other pieces in a similar vein. Some have also remarked that Rossini's sacral works are simple continuations of the traditions he created during his compositional career. In many ways, it is so, as the presented two works show. But, like in most cases with Rossini and belcanto, the pieces never lose a certain irresistible charm and beauty.
In this new series of uploads I am pairing up two completely different but, nonetheless, both surprisingly refreshing masses by Rossini: an early, even a bit immature work, "Messa di Milano", and a later, more elaborate piece, "Messa di Gloria" (which comes from the 1820s). My goals fall into to two categories: first off, to present the selections that I have chosen for posting and to provide some short ideas on the works; and, secondly, as the pieces, like most masses, follows the same basic structure and share the same text, to compare them.
Little is known about the circumstances that led to the composition of the first mass. The name gives us a location of the premiere but no other information is truly clear. While the music forms a stylistic whole, it is not known exactly if the three set sections (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) are meant to be together: they might have been parts of a complete setting of the Mass Ordinary. Whatever the time, the place and the musical surroundings, the work, especially considering Rossini's young age, is very charming and entertaining, the presumed sacral nature of the piece notwithstanding.
I'm only uploading several selections, including the complete Kyrie, Gratias, the Domine Deus (both set as terzets) etc., which I consider rewarding in some way or another. I'm providing the whole structure of the piece to give you a basic idea of the way Rossini set up the classical Mass succession, while the presented pieces are marked by a "*".

This piece is certainly unusual, being primarily a terzet between the tenors and the bass with each of their ensemble passages continued in similar vein by the chorus. Unusual is the second terzettino which first features a more minor mood introduced by the bass but which soon returns to the original statement. The final terzettino features a simple exchange of a flowing melodic structure, then repeated to great effect by the chorus. The final section almost becomes one of Rossini's classical crescendos.
5. Laudamus (*; aria for contralto). A short three-part opening "cavatina" for the contralto soloist with the middle section overplaying with the bass' earlier unsure statement but vindicating itself in the following excited allegro.
6. Gratias (chorus).
7. Domine Deus (terzettino for tenor, contralto & bass).

Preparación de la receta
Para preparar la receta de Cebiche de pescado y marisco (Perú)
Pelamos las patatas y las cortamos en trozos grandes. Las ponemos a cocer en agua abundante. Cuando lleven más o menos 5 - 7 minutos, les añadimos el maíz. Dejamos que cueza todo durante 30 minutos aproximadamente.
Limpiamos bien el pescado y las gambas. Lo cortamos todo en trozos pequeños o medianos (según gustos). Se coloca en una fuente amplia y honda. Añadimos la cebolla cortada en aros y sazonamos con sal y pimienta. Opcionalmente podríamos añadir ajo.
Por último, se exprimen los limones y las naranjas agrias y el jugo se esparce sobre los trozos del pescado y las gambas, hasta que quede cubierto, para que absorban todo el zumo. Añadimos unas hojas de cilantro picadas, mezclamos y lo dejamos reposar durante 2 horas por lo menos en el frigorífico.
Truco del cocinero: si no tenemos naranjas agrias, podemos mezclar la misma cantidad de limón que de naranja normal.
Para servirlo, colocamos en una bandeja los pimientos cortados en aros o en tiras, la lechuga y el cilantro para decorar. Después colocamos la patata y el maíz. Finalmente añadimos el cebiche.

Simone Alaimo
Simone Alaimo (born 3 February 1950) is an Italian bass-baritone. He is particularly known for his performances of the bel canto repertoire.
A native of Villabate, Alaimo studied at the Palermo Conservatory and then the L'Accademia di La Scala in Milan before making his début in 1977 at the Teatro Fraschini in Pavia as the title hero in Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Shortly thereafter he joined the roster of singers at the Teatro Massimo in his home city. In 1980 he made his first appearance at the Piccola Scala in a production of Carlo Evasio Soliva's La testa di bronzo and performed for the first time at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Radamanto in Giulio Caccini's Euridice. That year also marked his debut at the Festival de Ópera de Las Palmas and the Teatro Carlo Felice, two places he has sung with some frequency. In 1982 he performed for the first time at the Teatro di San Carlo, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Liceu, and the Rossini Opera Festival. He sang the role of Mustafà in Gioachino Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri for his United States debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1987. He reprised the role the following year for his first performance in the United Kingdom at the Royal Opera, London.

Raúl Giménez
Raúl Giménez (born September 14, 1950), is an Argentine operatic tenor, particularly associated with the Italian bel canto repertory, in which he is considered one of the best exponent in recent years.
Giménez was born in the small town of Carlos Pellegrini, Argentina. He studied at the Music Conservatory of Buenos Aires and made his operatic debut at the Teatro Colón as Ernesto in Don Pasquale, in 1980. After appearing in concert and opera throughout South America, he came to Europe in 1984, where he made his debut at the Wexford Festival in Ireland, in Cimarosa's Le astuzie femminili.
He quickly established himself in Mozart and Rossini operas, appearing at all the great opera houses and festivals of Europe (Paris, Aix-en-Provence, London, Glyndebourne, Vienna, Salzburg, Milan, Venice, Pesaro, Martina Franca, Rome, Barcelona, Brussels, Munich, Lausanne, Geneva etc.).
He made his American debut in Dallas in 1989, as Ernesto in Don Pasquale, and at the Metropolitan Opera New York his debut was as Count Almaviva in "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" in 1996.

Susanne Mentzer
Susanne Mentzer (born January 21, 1957) is an operatic mezzo-soprano. She is best known for singing trouser roles, such as Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Idamante in Mozart's Idomeneo, Octavian in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier and the composer in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, as well as other music of Mozart, Strauss, Rossini, Berlioz and Mahler.
She created the role of the mother of Yueyang in Tan Dun's opera The First Emperor at the Metropolitan Opera on December 21, 2006. She has also premiered works by Libby Larsen, Daniel Brewbaker and Carlisle Floyd.
Biography
Mentzer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Maryland and New Mexico. She was first introduced to opera as a teenager, when she worked as an usher at the Santa Fe Opera. She studied music therapy at the University of the Pacific and received her bachelor's and master's degrees at the Juilliard School. She later participated in the Houston Grand Opera Studio.
Mentzer made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Cherubino on January 4, 1989. Other roles she has sung at the Met include Octavian, Idamante, Nicklausse in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the composer in Ariadne auf Naxos, Rosina in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dorabella in Mozart's Così Fan Tutte, Mélisande in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande and Meg Page in Verdi's Falstaff, in addition to her role in The First Emperor.

I'm only uploading several selections, including the complete Kyrie, Gratias, the Domine Deus (both set as terzets) etc., which I consider rewarding in some way or another. I'm providing the whole structure of the piece to give you a basic idea of the way Rossini set up the classical Mass succession, while the presented pieces are marked by a "*". Susanne Mentzer - contralto, Raul Gimenez & Ian Bostridge - tenors, Simone Alaimo - bass. 1. Kyrie (chorus). 2. Christe (arioso for tenor). 3. Kyrie (chorus & terzettino for tenors and bass). 4. Gloria (*; chorus & terzettino for the same). This piece is certainly unusual, being primarily a terzet between the tenors and the bass with each of their ensemble passages continued in similar vein by the chorus. Unusual is the second terzettino which first features a more minor mood introduced by the bass but which soon returns to the original statement. The final terzettino features a simple exchange of a flowing melodic structure, then repeated to great effect by the chorus. The final section almost becomes one of Rossini's classical crescendos. 5. Laudamus (*; aria for contralto). A short three-part opening "cavatina" for the contralto soloist with the middle section overplaying with the bass' earlier unsure statement but vindicating itself in the following excited allegro. 6. Gratias (chorus). 7. Domine Deus (terzettino for tenor, contralto & bass). 8. Qui tollis (aria for contralto). 9. Quoniam (aria for bass). 10. Cum sancto spiritu (a repeat, albeit to a different text, of the "Gloria" section). 11. Credo (chorus). 12. Crucifixus (aria for contralto). 13. Resurrexit (chorus). -

Preparación de la receta Para preparar la receta de Cebiche de pescado y marisco (Perú) Pelamos las patatas y las cortamos en trozos grandes. Las ponemos a cocer en agua abundante. Cuando lleven más o menos 5 - 7 minutos, les añadimos el maíz. Dejamos que cueza todo durante 30 minutos aproximadamente. Limpiamos bien el pescado y las gambas. Lo cortamos todo en trozos pequeños o medianos (según gustos). Se coloca en una fuente amplia y honda. Añadimos la cebolla cortada en aros y sazonamos con sal y pimienta. Opcionalmente podríamos añadir ajo. Por último, se exprimen los limones y las naranjas agrias y el jugo se esparce sobre los trozos del pescado y las gambas, hasta que quede cubierto, para que absorban todo el zumo. Añadimos unas hojas de cilantro picadas, mezclamos y lo dejamos reposar durante 2 horas por lo menos en el frigorífico. Truco del cocinero: si no tenemos naranjas agrias, podemos mezclar la misma cantidad de limón que de naranja normal. Para servirlo, colocamos en una bandeja los pimientos cortados en aros o en tiras, la lechuga y el cilantro para decorar. Después colocamos la patata y el maíz. Finalmente añadimos el cebiche. -

But, like in most cases with Rossini and belcanto, the pieces never lose a certain irresistible charm and beauty. The title is also contradictory: the Mass is at the same time "petite" (because of its chamber music format) and "solennelle" (in view of its length and entirely weighty bearing). The music itself seems completely unmannered in style, more classicist than belcanto, though admirers of Rossini's art are bound to single out some operatic pieces. Surprisingly, there is a sense in which Rossini's continuously extraordinary musical facility is one of his weaknesses. He once remarked: "Show me a laundry list and I will set it to music!". To some extent, this is what he has done in the "Messe". Of course, there are many sections which beautifully reflect the words, but in other places one feels that Rossini has paid little regard to the essential meaning and form of the text. Yet at no point in the work does the music become remotely dull or routine. Such was Rossini's genius that even when the spirit of the music seems to depart from the spirit of the text one can't help but be captivated by the beautiful melodies and sheer joie-de-vivre of the piece. As he himself said: "delight must be the basis and aim of this art" - and that is what he has achieved: a work not of profound religious insight, but one that is a delightful, life-enhancing musical experience. Rossini originally specified twelve singers in all, with the soloists doubling the SATB chorus, and scored it for two pianos and harmonium. This version is considered by most the authentic and the only true one. The singular scoring for soloists, choir and yet quite compelling accompaniment by two pianos and harmonium is partially due to the occasion for which the piece was composed. Its first performance was at the dedication (16 March 1864) of the private chapel in the hôtel of Louise, Comtesse de Pillet-Will, to whom Rossini dedicated this refined and elegant piece which avoids the sentimental opulence of most contemporary liturgical works, such as those by Charles Gounod.
And yet, in 1867, Rossini himself revised the work for orchestra and chorus, for fear that someone else might accomplish the task if he did not. The performance of this version took place only on the 28th of February, 1869, at the Theatre-Italien of Paris, after the composer's death. I'm going with the latter version for many reasons, chief amongst them being my preference of a full orchestra and chorus over a piano accompaniment.
As in the previous pieces, I'm providing the whole structure of the piece, while only noting the sections I'm posting. Also I have to mention that I'm using (both in the above and following texts) sections from John Bawden's, the musical director for Fareham Philaharmonic Choir, excellent notes on the work for a scholar overview of the work.

In this new series of uploads I am pairing up two completely different but, nonetheless, both surprisingly refreshing masses by Rossini: an early, even a bit immature work, "Messa di Milano", and a later, more elaborate piece, "Messa di Gloria" (which comes from the 1820s). My goals fall into to two categories: first off, to present the selections that I have chosen for posting and to provide some short ideas on the works; and, secondly, as the pieces, like most masses, follows the same basic structure and share the same text, to compare them.
Little is known about the circumstances that led to the composition of the first mass. The name gives us a location of the premiere but no other information is truly clear. While the music forms a stylistic whole, it is not known exactly if the three set sections (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) are meant to be together: they might have been parts of a complete setting of the Mass Ordinary. Whatever the time, the place and the musical surroundings, the work, especially considering Rossini's young age, is very charming and entertaining, the presumed sacral nature of the piece notwithstanding.

In this new series of uploads I am pairing up two completely different but, nonetheless, both surprisingly refreshing masses by Rossini: an early, even a bit immature work, "Messa di Milano", and a later, more elaborate piece, "Messa di Gloria" (which comes from the 1820s). My goals fall into to two categories: first off, to present the selections that I have chosen for posting and to provide some short ideas on the works; and, secondly, as the pieces, like most masses, follows the same basic structure and share the same text, to compare them.
Little is known about the circumstances that led to the composition of the first mass. The name gives us a location of the premiere but no other information is truly clear. While the music forms a stylistic whole, it is not known exactly if the three set sections (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) are meant to be together: they might have been parts of a complete setting of the Mass Ordinary. Whatever the time, the place and the musical surroundings, the work, especially considering Rossini's young age, is very charming and entertaining, the presumed sacral nature of the piece notwithstanding.
I'm only uploading several selections, including the complete Kyrie, Gratias, the Domine Deus (both set as terzets) etc., which I consider rewarding in some way or another. I'm providing the whole structure of the piece to give you a basic idea of the way Rossini set up the classical Mass succession, while the presented pieces are marked by a "*".

1. Kyrie (chorus).
2. Christe (arioso for tenor).
3. Kyrie (chorus & terzettino for tenors and bass).
4. Gloria (*; chorus & terzettino for the same). This piece is certainly unusual, being primarily a terzet between the tenors and the bass with each of their ensemble passages continued in similar vein by the chorus. Unusual is the second terzettino which first features a more minor mood introduced by the bass but which soon returns to the original statement. The final terzettino features a simple exchange of a flowing melodic structure, then repeated to great effect by the chorus. The final section almost becomes one of Rossini's classical crescendos.
5. Laudamus (*; aria for contralto). A short three-part opening "cavatina" for the contralto soloist with the middle section overplaying with the bass' earlier unsure statement but vindicating itself in the following excited allegro.
6. Gratias (chorus).
7. Domine Deus (terzettino for tenor, contralto & bass).
8. Qui tollis (aria for contralto).
9. Quoniam (aria for bass).
10. Cum sancto spiritu (a repeat, albeit to a different text, of the "Gloria" section).
11. Credo (chorus).
12. Crucifixus (aria for contralto).
13. Resurrexit (chorus).

Preparación de la receta
Para preparar la receta de Cebiche de pescado y marisco (Perú)
Pelamos las patatas y las cortamos en trozos grandes. Las ponemos a cocer en agua abundante. Cuando lleven más o menos 5 - 7 minutos, les añadimos el maíz. Dejamos que cueza todo durante 30 minutos aproximadamente.
Limpiamos bien el pescado y las gambas. Lo cortamos todo en trozos pequeños o medianos (según gustos). Se coloca en una fuente amplia y honda. Añadimos la cebolla cortada en aros y sazonamos con sal y pimienta. Opcionalmente podríamos añadir ajo.
Por último, se exprimen los limones y las naranjas agrias y el jugo se esparce sobre los trozos del pescado y las gambas, hasta que quede cubierto, para que absorban todo el zumo. Añadimos unas hojas de cilantro picadas, mezclamos y lo dejamos reposar durante 2 horas por lo menos en el frigorífico.
Truco del cocinero: si no tenemos naranjas agrias, podemos mezclar la misma cantidad de limón que de naranja normal.
Para servirlo, colocamos en una bandeja los pimientos cortados en aros o en tiras, la lechuga y el cilantro para decorar. Después colocamos la patata y el maíz. Finalmente añadimos el cebiche.

The title is also contradictory: the Mass is at the same time "petite" (because of its chamber music format) and "solennelle" (in view of its length and entirely weighty bearing). The music itself seems completely unmannered in style, more classicist than belcanto, though admirers of Rossini's art are bound to single out some operatic pieces. Surprisingly, there is a sense in which Rossini's continuously extraordinary musical facility is one of his weaknesses. He once remarked: "Show me a laundry list and I will set it to music!". To some extent, this is what he has done in the "Messe". Of course, there are many sections which beautifully reflect the words, but in other places one feels that Rossini has paid little regard to the essential meaning and form of the text. Yet at no point in the work does the music become remotely dull or routine. Such was Rossini's genius that even when the spirit of the music seems to depart from the spirit of the text one can't help but be captivated by the beautiful melodies and sheer joie-de-vivre of the piece. As he himself said: "delight must be the basis and aim of this art" - and that is what he has achieved: a work not of profound religious insight, but one that is a delightful, life-enhancing musical experience. Rossini originally specified twelve singers in all, with the soloists doubling the SATB chorus, and scored it for two pianos and harmonium. This version is considered by most the authentic and the only true one. The singular scoring for soloists, choir and yet quite compelling accompaniment by two pianos and harmonium is partially due to the occasion for which the piece was composed. Its first performance was at the dedication (16 March 1864) of the private chapel in the hôtel of Louise, Comtesse de Pillet-Will, to whom Rossini dedicated this refined and elegant piece which avoids the sentimental opulence of most contemporary liturgical works, such as those by Charles Gounod.
And yet, in 1867, Rossini himself revised the work for orchestra and chorus, for fear that someone else might accomplish the task if he did not. The performance of this version took place only on the 28th of February, 1869, at the Theatre-Italien of Paris, after the composer's death. I'm going with the latter version for many reasons, chief amongst them being my preference of a full orchestra and chorus over a piano accompaniment.
As in the previous pieces, I'm providing the whole structure of the piece, while only noting the sections I'm posting. Also I have to mention that I'm using (both in the above and following texts) sections from John Bawden's, the musical director for Fareham Philaharmonic Choir, excellent notes on the work for a scholar overview of the work.

The soloists enter in a wonderfully sombre piece, slowly growing in size and in emotion with each new soloist. Just like in the following section, the piece has a certain cyclical character.
5. Gratias (terzettino for the same). The piece follows the previous solo section by slowly adding new singers and elaborating the original simple vocal line and orchestration.

Rossini is generally perceived as an operatic composer, and thus, his sacred works are sometimes perceived as lacking in the light of other pieces in a similar vein. Some have also remarked that Rossini's sacral works are simple continuations of the traditions he created during his compositional career. In many ways, it is so, as the presented two works show. But, like in most cases with Rossini and belcanto, the pieces never lose a certain irresistible charm and beauty.
In this new series of uploads I am pairing up two completely different but, nonetheless, both surprisingly refreshing masses by Rossini: an early, even a bit immature work, "Messa di Milano", and a later, more elaborate piece, "Messa di Gloria" (which comes from the 1820s). My goals fall into to two categories: first off, to present the selections that I have chosen for posting and to provide some short ideas on the works; and, secondly, as the pieces, like most masses, follows the same basic structure and share the same text, to compare them.
Little is known about the circumstances that led to the composition of the first mass. The name gives us a location of the premiere but no other information is truly clear. While the music forms a stylistic whole, it is not known exactly if the three set sections (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) are meant to be together: they might have been parts of a complete setting of the Mass Ordinary. Whatever the time, the place and the musical surroundings, the work, especially considering Rossini's young age, is very charming and entertaining, the presumed sacral nature of the piece notwithstanding.
I'm only uploading several selections, including the complete Kyrie, Gratias, the Domine Deus (both set as terzets) etc., which I consider rewarding in some way or another. I'm providing the whole structure of the piece to give you a basic idea of the way Rossini set up the classical Mass succession, while the presented pieces are marked by a "*".

Preparación de la receta
Para preparar la receta de Cebiche de pescado y marisco (Perú)
Pelamos las patatas y las cortamos en trozos grandes. Las ponemos a cocer en agua abundante. Cuando lleven más o menos 5 - 7 minutos, les añadimos el maíz. Dejamos que cueza todo durante 30 minutos aproximadamente.
Limpiamos bien el pescado y las gambas. Lo cortamos todo en trozos pequeños o medianos (según gustos). Se coloca en una fuente amplia y honda. Añadimos la cebolla cortada en aros y sazonamos con sal y pimienta. Opcionalmente podríamos añadir ajo.
Por último, se exprimen los limones y las naranjas agrias y el jugo se esparce sobre los trozos del pescado y las gambas, hasta que quede cubierto, para que absorban todo el zumo. Añadimos unas hojas de cilantro picadas, mezclamos y lo dejamos reposar durante 2 horas por lo menos en el frigorífico.
Truco del cocinero: si no tenemos naranjas agrias, podemos mezclar la misma cantidad de limón que de naranja normal.
Para servirlo, colocamos en una bandeja los pimientos cortados en aros o en tiras, la lechuga y el cilantro para decorar. Después colocamos la patata y el maíz. Finalmente añadimos el cebiche.
