This video has been taken in thakhek, the biggest city of khammuane, in the middle part of Laos, it is located in 332 km south of Vientiane Capital. this is a Yaphor sikhodtabong status parade on 3/2/2009 which was heading to the Muangkao Temple.. Many local people have participated the event.

This time I made sure I had a good seat. It was a comfortable, enjoyable ride. Click here for some random scenery videos that I shot from the bus, mind the lovely kitsch music and video clip: Video 1 Video 2 I consider bus and train rides as one of the 'attactions' of travelling. This was sort of like a 5 hour documentary! At certain parts we drove alongside the Mekong river. We came past various towns and small settlements, elaborate temples, swamps, rice fields with people working on them (wearing their chraracteristic straw hats), and after 3 pm as always loads of kids in school uniforms, returning home after school. Thakhek seems like a bleak and widespread town. There are not a lot of people out on the streets and most of its buildings (some of them French colonial) are in poor shape. I seemed to be the only one walking; all other people move from A to B in cars or on mopeds / motorbikes. I am here because it is a good base for trekking in the Phu Hin Bun national park which is supposed to be full of caves, waterfalls, limestone karst mountains rising straight up into the sky and valleys inbetween. Entry from: Thakhek, Lao Peoples Dem Rep Entry Title: "Thakhek" Entry: "The four of us caught the bus to Thakhek from Vientiane, it took all day so we arrived late, found a guest house and went for some dinner. Thakhek is a little town along the Mekong river in Central Laos and we came here to do some trekking in the Phu Hin Bun National Protected Area. The next day we went and found out our options for trekking. There was only one option with the Tourist Information Centre for a two day, one night trek into the Phu Hin Bun NPA so we signed up for that to leave the next morning, it cost 550000 kip each. We spent the rest of the day exploring the town. It is a tiny little town with not much going on, there is a lot of French colonial style buildings and a big fountain square and then lots of restaurants lining the Mekong. We spent the afternoon on the Mekong having a few Beer Laos. The next day we set off for trekking at 8am, our two guides Black ant and Pet came and picked us up and we drove to the start of the trail. The Phu Hin Bun NPA is 158 square km and straight from the start had amazing countryside. We were surrounded by a mixture of dense jungle, huge limestone cliffs, streams and caves, it was fantastic. A long story - if only it was as exciting as the actual action ;-) Arriving at the old colonial town of Thakhek, I planned to stay only one day to see a few caves and then move on South. As always things didn't turn out quite as expected... Guinea pigs At the bus station I saw an advertisement for eco-tours. These treks, run by the provincial tourism office and a Dutch NGO called SNV were in their test phase. The participants on the two day trek to Phan Hin Boun NBCA (National Biodiversity Conservation Area) consisted of two German guys, two French girls, a Dutchman and me, led by a team of guides and villages guides, and an SNV supervisor. It turned out that we were actually the first tourists ever to do the trek! Not that you could tell though. Apart from the guides lacking some maturity and assertiveness, the trek was a big success! A wonderful itinerary with day walks partially trough rice paddies surrounded by karst mountains, a bamboo forest (the guide had to use a machete to clear the path), caves, with the occasional swimming hole. Overnight stay was at a local village (homestay). Not a walk in the park, but also not too stressing, the trek was just <b>...</b>

The city has many French colonial style official buildings, villas and shops. Western scientists first encountered the Laotian rock rat - kha-nyou (Laonastes aenigmamus) in Thakhek's market.
Construction of the Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, linking Thakhek to Nakhon Phanom, started in 2009 and is expected to be commemorated on 11/11/11.
The population is 35,000 people according to 2006 census data.
