Roy Harold Scherer, Jr., later Roy Harold Fitzgerald (November 17, 1925 – October 2, 1985), known professionally as Rock Hudson, was an American film and television actor, most recognized as a romantic leading man during the 1950s and 1960s, most notably in Magnificent Obsession (1954), Giant (1956) and several popular comedies with Doris Day. Later roles included the leads in Ice Station Zebra and the popular television series McMillan & Wife along with a role in the hugely successful series Dynasty.
Hudson was voted "Star of the Year", "Favorite Leading Man", and similar titles by numerous movie magazines. The 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) tall actor was one of the most popular and well-known movie stars of the time. He completed nearly 70 motion pictures and starred in several television productions during a career that spanned over four decades.
Hudson died in 1985, being the first major celebrity to die from an AIDS-related illness.
Hudson was born Roy Harold Scherer, Jr., in Winnetka, Illinois, the only child of Katherine Wood (of English and Irish descent), a telephone operator, and Roy Harold Scherer, Sr., (of German and Swiss descent) an auto mechanic who abandoned the family during the depths of the Great Depression. His mother remarried and his stepfather Wallace "Wally" Fitzgerald adopted him, changing his last name to Fitzgerald. Hudson's years at New Trier High School were unremarkable. He sang in the school's glee club and was remembered as a shy boy who delivered newspapers, ran errands and worked as a golf caddy.
Jennifer Jones (March 2, 1919 - December 17, 2009) was an American Oscar-winning actress during the Hollywood golden years. Jones, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1943 The Song of Bernadette, was also nominated four-times for Academy Awards. She married three times; most notably to film producer David O. Selznick.
Jones, who starred in more than 20 films over a thirty year career, semi-retired from acting following the death of her husband, David O. Selznick, in 1965. In 1980, she founded the Jennifer Jones Simon Foundation For Mental Health And Education after her daughter's suicide. In later life, Jones withdrew from public life to live in quiet retirement with her son and his family in Malibu, California.
Jones was born Phylis Lee Isley in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the daughter of Flora Mae (née Suber) and Phillip Ross Isley. An only child, she was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic school. Her parents toured the Midwest in a traveling tent show that they owned and operated. Jones attended Monte Cassino, a girls' school and junior college in Tulsa and then Northwestern University in Illinois, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, before transferring to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1938. It was there that she met and fell in love with fellow acting student Robert Walker. The couple married on January 2, 1939.
Vittorio De Sica (7 July 1901 or 1902 – 13 November 1974) was an Italian director and actor, a leading figure in the neorealist movement.
Four of the films he directed won Academy Awards: Sciuscià and Ladri di biciclette were awarded honorary Oscars, while ieri, oggi, domani and Il giardino dei Finzi Contini won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Indeed, the great critical success of Sciuscià (the first foreign film to be so recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) and Ladri di biciclette helped establish the permanent Best Foreign Film Oscar. These two films generally are considered part of the canon of classic cinema.Ladri di biciclette was cited by Turner Classic Movies as one of the 15 most influential films in cinema history.
Ironically, for an artist considered one of the Italian cinema's greatest and most influential directors, De Sica's sole Academy Award nomination was for acting, when he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for playing Major Rinaldi in American director Charles Vidor's 1957 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, a movie that was panned by critics and proved a box office flop. De Sica's acting was considered the highlight of the film.
Carlotta Mercedes McCambridge (March 16, 1916 – March 2, 2004) was an American actress. Orson Welles called her "the world's greatest living radio actress."
McCambridge was born in Joliet, Illinois, the daughter of Irish American Catholic parents Marie (née Mahaffry) and John Patrick McCambridge. She graduated from Mundelein College in Chicago before embarking on a career.
She began her career as a radio actor during the 1940s while also performing on Broadway. Her radio work in this period included her portrayal of Rosemary Levy on Abie's Irish Rose and various characters on the radio series I Love A Mystery in both its West Coast and East Coast incarnations (most notably as "Charity Martin" in The Thing That Cries in the Night, "Nasha" and "Laura" in Bury Your Dead, Arizona, "Sunny Richards" in both The Million Dollar Curse and The Temple of Vampires and "Jack 'Jacqueline' Dempsey Ross" in The Battle of the Century). She frequently did feature roles on the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, and was an original cast member on The Guiding Light, before the Bauers took over as the central characters. She also starred in her own show, The Defense Attorney as Martha Ellis Bryant.
A Farewell to Arms is a 1957 American drama film directed by Charles Vidor. The screenplay by Ben Hecht, based in part on a 1930 play by Laurence Stallings, was the second feature film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1929 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. It was the last film produced by David O. Selznick.
Frederick Henry is an American serving as an ambulance driver for the Italian Army during World War I. While recovering from a wound in a British base hospital in northern Italy, he meets Catherine Barkley, a Red Cross nurse, and the two engage in an affair. Frederick's friend, the doctor, convinces the army that Frederick's knee is more severely wounded than it actually is and the two continue their romance but do never get married.
Catherine discovers she is pregnant but after sneaking alcohol into the hospital for Frederick, the head nurse discovers the duplicity and separates them. She informs Frederick's superiors that he has fully recovered from his wounds and is ready for active duty. During their separation, Catherine comes to believe Frederick has abandoned her.
A farewell to arms
A man with his charms
You can die if you want to
You can live in a penthouse ???
A farewell to arms
A jacket in with his charms
Another man with a ???
A farewell to arms
Every boy ???
A farewell to arms...
Can you hear their cries?
Nowhere the children run to hide
Crimson rivers flow down hills, atone our ills
And woe to all her songs of love
A farewell to arms
Mutilated lives blackening as coffin line the sides
Filled with fathers
Who has won when only sons
Who hold their grieving heads and mourn
A farewell to arms
Always our souls entwine
Erase this vast divide
Deaf ears our voices rest
Tyrant, this is protest
Who has won?
Yes, who has won?
I'll wave this flag of white
So the avenged see the light
We'll pay for closed eyes
Before genocide
Pissing the masquerade
March to death parade
Trade not humanity
For pearls of the slavery
In the depth of mind the heart will find
The truth of our leaders
We'll try the facts so through the cracks
May fall the lying cheater
Who has won when we're all dead?
I'll wave this flag of white
So the avenged see the light
We'll pay for closed eyes
Before genocide
So is this how we live?
Or is this how we die?
Black blood dripping from platinum fangs
Rich blood flees while
Our poverty hangs, oh
Oh, shepherds, they herd the mindless trance
As the flock follows the puppet's dance
In a fatal romance
Oh, all that they needed was
A pretext, war's next
Heads to the chopping blocks
And our necks are next
For those who died
Who fought for our rights
Whose children now slaves
They're turning in their graves
Oh, war hawks and senators
They sit right so trite
Never their sons will know
What it's like to fight
Soldiers are dead
And children have bled
And the silence is numb
What have we become?
What have we become?
What have we become?
What have we become?
God save us
I've been letting down my guard, letting you back in again
"We all make mistakes", she said
Forgive and forget who was wrong or right
Because it's all the same tonight
I want to be the one that you never forget
Baby all I ever wanted was to wake up to the sound of your breathing
To know we made it through the night holding one another so tight
Holding onto everything that just felt so right
Now I wish I could say all the words that you said
They never mattered anyway
All the words that you said never mattered anyway
You are everything I want and all that I can't live without
I know you have your share of doubt, but I can't forget
Laying in your car, staring at the stars
Only wishing on the brightest ones
