'Greatest light show on Earth'viewers inside mesmeric phenomenon of an aurora substorm When the sky over Yellowknife, Canada, lit up one cold March night with a spectacular Northern Lights display, Korean photographer Kwon O Chul was on hand to record the breath-taking phenomenon in real-time with his camera. Chul, who describes himself as astrophotographer, traveled to Canada's rugged Northern Territories south of the Arctic Circle in March 2013 to capture a celestial event known as an aurora substorm - a brief disturbance in the Earth's magnetosphere that causes energy to be released. Aurora substorms are dramatic, fast-moving and short-lived There are two types of auroras - Aurora Borealis, or ‘Northern Lights,’ and Aurora Australis, known as ‘Southern Lights.’ Auroras occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in the earth's atmosphere at altitudes from 20 to 200 miles above the planet’s surface. The interactions between the charged particles give off light. Auroral displays appear in many colors: red, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting. The common green hue is caused by colliding oxygen molecules at altitudes of up to 150 miles

EARTH-DIRECTED X-FLARE AND CME: Sunspot AR2158 erupted on Sept. 10th at 17:46 UT, producing an X1.6-class solar flare. A flash of ultraviolet radiation from the explosion ionized the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere, disturbing HF radio communications for more than an hour. More importantly, the explosion hurled a CME directly toward Earth. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory photographed the expanding cloud. Radio emissions from shock waves at the leading edge of the CME suggest that the cloud tore through the sun's atmosphere at speeds as high as 3750 km/s. That would make this a very fast moving storm, and likely to reach Earth before the weekend. Auroras are definitely in the offing. Stay tuned for a more detailed forecast in the hours ahead. STORM WARNING: A pair of CMEs is heading for Earth. The two solar storm clouds were launched on Sept. 9th and 10th by strong explosions in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2158. NOAA forecasters estimate a nearly 80% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Sept. 12th when the first of the two CMEs arrives. Auroras are in the offing, possibly visible at mid-latitudes before the weekend.

The sequence of shots was taken October 29, 2011 from 12: 49: 23 to 12: 54: 07 GMT, on a pass starting about 900 miles east of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean traveling southeastward. This brief video was compiled from a sequence of shots taken after the Progress 42P vehicle undocked from the ISS. This vehicle brought the crew supplies on October 29, 2011, and undocked later that day. This video shows the vehicle burning up in the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.
