Ancylus Lake
Ancylus Lake is a name given by geologists to the body of fresh water that replaced the Yoldia Sea after the latter had been severed from its saline intake across central Sweden (with the eastern end of the channel near present Stockholm) by the isostatic rise of south Scandinavian landforms. The dates are approximately 9500–8000 BP calibrated, during the full Boreal period. The lake became the Littorina Sea when rising oceanic levels broke through the Great Belt.
The lake was named by Gerard de Geer after Ancylus fluviatilis, a gastropod found in its sediments.
Description
The elevation of southern Sweden did not entirely block the flow across central Sweden. Some egress continued from the lake through the Göta and Steinselva rivers, which exit Vänern to the Kattegat. Salt water did not enter the lake, however, which became entirely fresh as the lake rose above sea level. The date at which the flow was certainly blocked is about 8000 BP, when nearby Lake Vättern (part of the waterway system) became severed from Ancylus Lake.

Hur bildades Öresund? Lommabukten täcktes av is förra helgen, men för inte länge sedan var Öresund istället för is täckt med land. Östersjön var för runt 8000 år sedan en sötvattensjö som kallades Ancylussjön, och Danmark kunde nås till fots från Skåne. Efter en kombination av stigande havsnivåer och landhöjning fick havet kontakt med Ancylussjön. Saltvatten strömmade in i sjön och föregångaren till dagens Öresund bildades. Det nya bräckta havet har fått namnet Littorinahavet (efter en snäcka som trivdes i det nya salthaltiga vattnet). You have probably never heard of the Paratethys, but just a few million years ago, this giant was the largest lake in the world. Covering 2.800.000 square kilometers or over 1.000.000 square miles, it was the size of some of the largest countries which we have to today and during its 7 million year lifespan it boasted large variety of marine species which unfortunately went extinct together with the lake. The story of the #Paratethys is a story of the force of #Geography and a gentle reminder that nothing on this planet is forever, not even the largest things that have ever existed.

At the end of the last ice age, there was a time when glaciers reached their maximum. This period is called the Last Glacial Maximum, or LGM. After the LGM, glaciers melt over thousands of years. As a result, many changes have taken place in Fennoscandia.
This episode introduces the Fennoscandia ice sheet's thawing and the first Scandinavians' migration. It also introduces the uplift, the tsunami, and the formation of lakes caused by deglaciation.

Hur bildades Öresund? Lommabukten täcktes av is förra helgen, men för inte länge sedan var Öresund istället för is täckt med land. Östersjön var för runt 8000 år sedan en sötvattensjö som kallades Ancylussjön, och Danmark kunde nås till fots från Skåne. Efter en kombination av stigande havsnivåer och landhöjning fick havet kontakt med Ancylussjön. Saltvatten strömmade in i sjön och föregångaren till dagens Öresund bildades. Det nya bräckta havet har fått namnet Littorinahavet (efter en snäcka som trivdes i det nya salthaltiga vattnet). Spår av havsvallar från denna tid kan ännu ses i Skåne, exempelvis vid Lundåkrabukten vid Landskrona.

Ancylus Lake
Ancylus Lake is a name given by geologists to the body of fresh water that replaced the Yoldia Sea after the latter had been severed from its saline intake across central Sweden (with the eastern end of the channel near present Stockholm) by the isostatic rise of south Scandinavian landforms. The dates are approximately 9500–8000 BP calibrated, during the full Boreal period. The lake became the Littorina Sea when rising oceanic levels broke through the Great Belt.
The lake was named by Gerard de Geer after Ancylus fluviatilis, a gastropod found in its sediments.
Description
The elevation of southern Sweden did not entirely block the flow across central Sweden. Some egress continued from the lake through the Göta and Steinselva rivers, which exit Vänern to the Kattegat. Salt water did not enter the lake, however, which became entirely fresh as the lake rose above sea level. The date at which the flow was certainly blocked is about 8000 BP, when nearby Lake Vättern (part of the waterway system) became severed from Ancylus Lake.
