Communicating with VU

During your time at VU, we will send you updates relating to your studies, services we offer and events and opportunities on campus using the VU website, Student email and MyVU Portal. These are your most up to date resources for what’s happening at VU so make sure you check them regularly.

VU website

Our website is the best place to start when looking for information. It is mobile friendly and searchable, allowing you to find information wherever you are.

Student email

All students are provided with a VU email address when you enrol. Remember to check it at least weekly to read email and announcements from the University regarding the management of your course/program, key student administration matters and communication from your lecturers. We send you a weekly e-newsletter to let you know about news, events and opportunities that you may find interesting.

MYVU Portal

MYVU Portal provides you with access to a variety of applications and tools relating to your individual enrolment and study including your class timetable, exam timetable, results and much more. We update the announcement channel in MYVU Portal if we need to let you know about anything that may impact on enrolment or study such as scheduled maintenance to systems and important administrative dates. More information on MYVU Portal is available at Access to MYVU Portal.

ASKVU and Chat

ASKVU is an interactive web portal for current VU students to view frequently asked questions (FAQs) and make and manage enquiries. AskVU includes FAQs related to student administration, enrolments, fees, admissions, library, graduations, examinations and more. If you can't find what you are looking for you can ask a question or speak directly to one of our staff through our online chat function.

Social media

We have a number of presences on social media. If you have something you would like to share with us then tag us, tweet us or check in with us!

If you have a site that you would like us to link to from out VU Facebook page or follow on Twitter, please let us know, we are happy to support you.

Email us at social.media@vu.edu.au, post on our Facebook wall or send us a tweet.

Social media can be a great way for you to connect with other students and we understand that you may want to use the University's name in the title so that other students can find your group or page.

Acceptable behaviour

Remember that if you are using Victoria University's name (or a derivation of it such as VU or Vic Uni) please ensure that you do not tarnish or misrepresent VU. This means images and comments should abide by applicable laws, legislation and policies including Victoria University's Student Charter and our Discrimination, Harassment and Bullying Policy.

Basically, comments that are racist, sexist, promote illegal activity or degrade a group or individual should not be made in the first place, or should be removed as soon as possible. Students who are being harassed by other VU students should seek support from counselling or student advisory. Stalking and harassment claims will be treated seriously and the offender may face disciplinary action.

We understand that many slang terms are used colloquially and in good fun but please remember that they often have other meanings and may be taken offensively by others. Social media can be seen by a range of people (including potential employers) so think about how you are representing yourself.

Social media and study

There are some social media tools within VU that provide you with helpdesk support and a secure login through your VU identity. These include the:

When you are using these sites, here are some things to look out for:

  • Make sure you know where to set your privacy settings, and set them to a comfortable and secure level.
  • Don't post your or other people's private/confidential or identifying information online. For example, you may not want to use a photo of yourself as a profile picture
  • You should be aware of copyright and other intellectual property issues when uploading video, music, images, logos, designs, and text that others have created. Make sure that you have the right to use the intellectual property or ask for permission. Be sure to cite the creator/owner. There are copyright-free alternatives such as Creative Commons licensed work.
  • Keep your participation respectful. Cyberbullying or other kinds of harassment will not be tolerated. Your behaviour is still bound by the Student Charter.
  • The quality and accuracy of your posts matters. Do not make disparaging remarks about others. Remember that you are participating as a student of VU.

SMS (text messages)

Keeping your details up to date is essential - we may occasionally SMS you important information such as census dates to the mobile number you provided on your enrolment form. If your number has changed, make sure to update it online through the MYVU Portal.
