Dan Halloran (born March 16, 1972)^[1] is a Republican member of the New York City Council. He was also endorsed by the Libertarian, Independence and Conservative parties^[2] in his 2009 election to the New York City Council. He represents nerarly 200,000 residents of New York City in the 19th Council District, of Queens. Elected on November 3, 2009,^[3] he succeeded Tony Avella, who made a failed bid to become the Democratic nominee for mayor. As of 2009 he was reportedly the highest-elected person to have run on the Libertarian Party line in the United States.^{[4][dubious – discuss]}

Halloran sits on the Fire & Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Land Use (including Landmarks, Public Siting & Maritime Uses sub-committee), Public Housing, and Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Disability Services committees.^[5]

Personal life[link]

Halloran was raised in a "traditional Irish household" and was an attorney prior to running for office.^[6] He earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from St. John's University Law School and a B.A. in history and anthropology from the City University of New York. He worked in the NYPD and several District Attorneys' offices before entering private practice as a lawyer in a firm with offices in Queens and Long Island. He has been of counsel to the New York City Patrolman's Benevolent Association (PBA), worked on the Felony Panel of the 18B Assigned Counsel Plan of NYC, and is a Court Designated Referee in the Queens Supreme Court. His family has been in public service in New York City for five generations, going back to 1800's. ^[7]

Political views[link]

Halloran is a registered life-long Republican, a fiscal conservative and libertarian. He opposes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, best-known as "Obamacare".^[8] He has appeared as a regular commentator on the Strategy Room on Fox News^[9] where he has discussed matters ranging from Healthcare reform to government spending, off-shore oil exploration, and other conservative and libertarian principles.^[10]

He was purportedly asked to run for U.S. Congress in the 2010 election cycle in the 5th District of New York by Republican, Libertarian, and Conservative leaders.^[11] Despite being courted by the NRCC and Congressman Peter King to run, he withdrew from consideration citing the economic crisis in the New York City and state budgets and the need to set the city's finances in order before he could consider taking on a run for any other office.^[12]

Halloran, whose cousin, Lieutenant Vincent G. Halloran, an FDNY First Responder, died on 9/11^[13], became the first elected official in New York City to publicly criticize the Park51 Cordoba House project near Ground Zero of the World Trade Center site, stating: "If we want a nation of peace ... then peace comes with understanding. And they need to understand that this is sacred ground to New Yorkers."^[14] "New York City is the greatest city in the world [a place of religious tolerance, but that tolerance] starts when you say 'I understand your pain, and I am not going to inflict more on you'", he added, describing Ground Zero as "sacred ground to New Yorkers".^[15]

Allegation of work slowdown[link]

Halloran attracted widespread attention when he stated that five municipal employees had told him of a deliberate slowdown in clearing snow after a blizzard in December 2010; the slowdown was allegedly organized to put Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a bad light. His comments precipitated multiple criminal investigations. The two workers he identified, however, did not corroborate his story, and he refused to name the three others, citing alleged "attorney-client privilege".^[16]

Religion[link]

Halloran's study of Norsemen and Viking archaeology and field research in Ireland led him to develop an interest in Germanic mythology and lore, and eventually to Theodism,^[8] which has attracted widespread attention. He is a member of the New Normannii Reik, a branch of Heathenism.^[17] The Village Voice described Halloran as "America's First Elected Heathen";^[18] another Reconstructionist Neopagan adherent, Jessica Orsini (who is Hellenic), had previously been elected to the city council of Centralia, Missouri in 2006.^[19]

His religion became an issue during the campaign after it was revealed that he was an adherent of Theodism. On his group's website, Halloran offered the following descriptions of his beliefs: "We believe in and honor the Gods and Goddesses of the North, spirits of the land, and the memories of our ancestors"^[6] and described his group as "a cultural, religious and martial organization; dedicated to reviving the folkways of the Norman peoples of Northern Europe."^[20] Odin, Tyr and Freyr are among the deities worshipped by the group. Halloran also stated that "It is our hope to reconstruct the pre-Christian religion of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European peoples, within a cultural framework and community environment." When asked about his beliefs, Halloran said "I was raised a Roman Catholic^[17] right here in Auburndale. I was baptized into the Catholic Church and took my confirmation at 13. I attended Jesuit schools. Then and now, faith is a cornerstone of my life." Halloran served as legal counsel and incorporating attorney for the New York City Pagan Pride Project.^[17]

State Senator Frank Padavan stated he felt Halloran's religion should not be an issue: "We have every religion under the sun in this district ... It's all here; so what? As long as everybody is properly motivated, so be it." These sentiments were echoed by the Queens County Republican Party chairman, Phil Ragusa, who additionally described Halloran as "a traditional person" and "a regular guy".^[6] Halloran has lectured and discussed his theology on a national level.^[8]

The Village Voice reported on Halloran's two years in office in the paper's November 30 – December 6, 2011 edition in a report entitled "Odin Himself Might Have Had A Hard Time Predicting Dan Halloran's Strange Career On New York's City Council". The report pointed out that when Halloran was elected in an off-year campaign, he was the "'First Atheling' or prince, of his own Theodish tribe, called New Normandy. He had 'thralls' who swore their allegiance to him ... he led his flock, about 100 people at its height, in their polytheistic celebration of the gods".^[21] However, on election night, November 4, 2009, Halloran thanked his law partner, promising "The next time you give me advice to take a website down, I'll do it", referring to the now defunct New Normandy website, which had contained "images of Halloran in medieval garb, hoisting drinking horns and other regalia that he [Halloran] had apparently found embarrassing."^[21]

2012 Congressional Campaign[link]

On March 26, 2012 Halloran announced that he would campaign for a vacant US Representative seat in the newly redistricted 6th congressional district. He is the only Republican nominee, and has been cross-endorsed by the New York State Conservative Party and will be their nominee.^[22] He will also be nominated by the Libertarian Party and receive their endorsement at their state convention this month as well. ^[23]

Foster Stephen Friess (born April 2, 1940) is an American businessman and supporter of conservative Christian causes. In a 2001 article, BusinessWeek suggested Friess "may be the longest-surviving successful growth-stock picker, having navigated markets for 36 years, in his own firm since 1974."^[1]

Personal life[link]

Friess was born in 1940 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, a small town with a current population of 8,000. As a high school student, Friess held a variety of leadership positions, including valedictorian, class president, and captain of the basketball, track, golf and baseball teams.^{[citation needed]}

A first-generation college graduate, Friess attended the University of Wisconsin (now University of Wisconsin–Madison), where he earned a degree in business administration. As a student, he served as president of Chi Phi Fraternity, enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, and was named one of the "ten most outstanding senior men". In 1962 he married fellow student Lynnette Estes.^{[citation needed]}

Friess identifies as a born-again evangelical Christian. Despite his professional success, he was unhappy due to a "marriage flirting with divorce and emotionally distant children"; in October 1978, Friess "did one of those 'born again' things".^[2] He often refers to God as the "Chairman of my board" and his personal website quotes Galatians 6:2 and Matthew 25:35–40. He attributes all of his subsequent success, both personal and professional, to his faith.^{[citation needed]}

Career[link]

After graduating from college, Foster trained to be an infantry platoon leader and served as the intelligence officer for the First Guided Missile Brigade, Fort Bliss, Texas. In 1964, he began his investment career, joining the Brittingham family-controlled NYSE member firm in Wilmington, Delaware, where he eventually rose to the position of Director of Research.

In 1974, Friess and his wife launched their own investment management firm, Friess Associates, LLC. Although success came slowly in its early years, the firm grew to over $15.7 billion in assets managed. Forbes named the Brandywine Fund, a Friess Associates flagship that boasted an average of 20% annual gains in the 1990s, as one of the decade's top performers.^[3]

In 2001, Friess Associates partnered with Affiliated Managers Group (AMG), an asset-management firm, to facilitate succession planning and to spread ownership among its partners. AMG acquired a majority interest in Friess Associates in October 2001 and held a 70% interest as of September 2011. A broad group of Friess partners, including senior management and researchers, held 20% equity ownership, while the Friess family retained 10%.^[4]

Political activism[link]

Friess has been an active patron of religious and conservative causes. He has been instrumental in keeping the political campaign of the 2012 presidential hopeful Rick Santorum alive by financing a super PAC, the Red, White and Blue Fund, which runs television advertisements on behalf of Santorum, who was unable to run a television campaign with his own funds. According to campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, Friess's contributions to the Red, White and Blue Fund amount to more than 40% of its total assets – or, $331,000 as of 31 December 2011.^[5][6] He had donated $250,000 to Santorum's re-election campaign in 2006, and at least that amount to the Republican Governors' Association.^[7] In the wake of the New Hampshire Republican primary, 2012, and before the South Carolina primary, Friess told Politico that he was "putting together a challenge grant to encourage other wealthy donors to give to the Red, White and Blue Fund, ... he said [the fund] received a $1 million check" the day after the New Hampshire vote.^[8] The Million-dollar donation was conveyed in four checks between November, 2011 and January, 2012.^[6]

In addition to Santorum's faith, pro-life stance, and hawkish foreign policy leanings, the possibility of defeating incumbent President Barack Obama was a major component of Friess's decision to back Santorum's campaign.^[9] Friess is reportedly considering major contributions to American Crossroads in hopes to influence key 2012 senate races.^[10]

Friess has also donated $100,000 to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to help defeat the Democrats' recall effort in 2011. In addition, he has reportedly donated more than $3 million to the conservative commentator Tucker Carlson's The Daily Caller website.^[7] At one of the semi-annual, private seminars held by the Koch brothers in June 2011, Friess was recognized for his donation exceeding $1 million to the Kochs' political activities.^[11]

While being interviewed by Andrea Mitchell, regarding contraception, Friess said, "And this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it's so – it's such – inexpensive, you know, back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly."^[6][12] The remark caused considerable embarrassment to Santorum's campaign.^[12] Santorum labeled it "a bad off-color joke."^[12] Following a loss in the Wisconsin primary, Santorum announced the suspension of his campaign on April 10, 2012.^[13][14]

Philanthropy[link]

Friess has been involved in numerous charitable activities. He and his wife run the Friess Family Foundation, whose activities include supporting Christian mobile medical services, sponsoring Water Missions International's work to provide clean water in Malawi, and donating to relief and recovery efforts following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Indonesian tsunami, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.^[15] Friess sponsored a matching grant program to raise $2 million for relief efforts for the 2004 Indonesian tsunami and personally traveled to the areas most affected by the earthquake and tsunami in order to speak with local church and organization leaders to identify the best efforts to support.^[16] He sponsored another matching grant for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, raising more than $4 million to support Katrina victims.^[16]

He supported a YMCA development in Maryvale, Arizona, along with several local mentoring and ministry programs.^[17] He is the principal donor behind the Friess Family Community Campus, a $3.7 million complex equipped with football, baseball, softball fields, and a track at Rice Lake High School in his hometown.^[18]

Friess has won a number of awards for his religious work, including the Canterbury Medal from the Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty,^[19] the Adam Smith Award from Hillsdale College^[20] the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award from Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation^[21] the David R. Jones Award for Leadership in Philanthropy^[22] and a Medal of Distinction from the University of Delaware.^[23] He has been awarded honorary degrees from Pepperdine University, Regent University, and Goldey Beacom College.^{[citation needed]}

David Joseph Weldon, (known as Dave Weldon) (born August 31, 1953, Amityville, New York) is an American politician and physician. He was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Florida's 15th congressional district.

Weldon served in the United States Army from 1981 to 1987 and the United States Army Reserve from 1987 until 1992. In 1978, he received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University at Buffalo, and in 1981 a medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine. He practiced as a physician in Florida after becoming an MD.

Terri Schiavo controversy[link]

In response to the legal battle over the removal of the feeding tube of Terri Schiavo, Weldon introduced legislation to force review of the case by the federal government. Weldon, who has a medical degree, believed that Schiavo was not in a vegetative state. He supported his belief saying, "She responds to verbal stimuli, she attempts to vocalize, she tracks with her eyes, she emotes, she attempts to kiss her father."^[1]

2006[link]

Weldon faced Democrat Bob Bowman in the general 2006 election. Weldon raised significantly more campaign funds than Bowman: By the end of September, Weldon's total was $673,321 versus $21,944 for Bowman.^[2] Weldon also refused to debate Bowman during the campaign.^[3] In the November election, Weldon received 125,596 votes to Bowman's 97,947.^[4]

2008[link]

On January 25, 2008, Dave Weldon claiming "He never wanted to be a career politician" announced he would not seek another term and would be returning to his medical practice.^[5] He endorsed state Senator Bill Posey to succeed him.

Weldon resides in Indialantic, Florida, with his wife, Nancy, and their two children, Katie and David.

In December, 2005, Weldon joined with several other Congressmen to form the Second Amendments, a bipartisan rock and country band set to play for United States troops stationed overseas over the Holiday season. Weldon plays the bass guitar.[1]

John Corabi (born on April 26, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a heavy metal singer and guitarist who has worked with such bands as Angora, The Scream, Mötley Crüe, Union and ESP (both with former KISS lead guitarist Bruce Kulick), Ratt (as a guitarist), Twenty 4 Seven (with his then Ratt bandmate Bobby Blotzer), Zen Lunatic, Brides of Destruction, and Angel City Outlaws (with his then Ratt bandmates Robbie Crane and Bobby Blotzer, and former Ratt guitarist Keri Kelli, who he replaced in Ratt). John is now recording and touring on his own, with a new unplugged CD due out in Feb 2012

Mötley Crüe[link]

After Mötley Crüe parted ways with lead singer Vince Neil in 1992, Corabi was hired as his replacement. Bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee stated that the band would benefit from the addition of John's voice and having another musician contribute to the songwriting. However, Corabi's voice did not have the same effect as his predecessor which alienated some fans and the record label. Corabi recorded the self-titled Mötley Crüe album in 1994 and the EP Quaternary. Though the music was heavier and more elaborate than the rest of the Mötley Crüe catalog, it did not sell as well as previous releases from the band. During the early stages of the writing of a new album which would become Generation Swine, Mötley Crüe's record label refused to provide funds to record the album unless Vince Neil was let back in the band. Mötley Crüe accepted the request and by 1997 Corabi was replaced by the returning Vince Neil. Many of the songs from the early writing session were used on the album and Corabi is credited on the liner notes for co-writing some of the songs.

Union[link]

Union was formed from recently released musician Bruce Kulick of Kiss, John Corabi, Brent Fitz, and Jamie Hunting. John and Bruce wrote what would become the first Union album (self titled) and proceeded with a nationwide acoustic tour, to promote the album, featuring just Corabi and Kulick (both on guitar). Soon the full band went on a world tour headlining small venues in support of the Union album. The second album "Live in the Galaxy" was a live recording with 2 acoustic tracks recorded in a mobile studio. The third and final Union album, The Blue Room, was a more polished sound than the first studio CD. Union never officially called it quits (playing live shows every so often with guest drummers and bass players), but with Kulick playing along with Grand Funk Railroad, Corabi playing with many bands, most notably Ratt, and both members being tied up in solo projects, Union will probably never return to write new studio material..

ESP (Eric Singer Project)[link]

ESP also featured guitarist Bruce Kulick, bassist Karl Cochran, and drummer Eric Singer. Ace Frehley makes a special appearance on the Hendrix cover Foxy Lady.

Twenty 4 Seven[link]

Twenty 4 Seven, a collaboration with Corabi, drummer Bobby Blotzer (Ratt, Contraband), and guitarist Rob Marcello (Ironhorse, Obsession, Danger Danger) recorded 10 hard rock tracks entitled Destination Everywhere (US, 2002).

Brides of Destruction[link]

Corabi was featured as second guitarist on Brides of Destruction's 2004 album Here Comes The Brides. He had multiple reasons for leaving the band. One was the fact that he was told it would be an effort much like the "Mötley Crüe" album. Secondly, he did not get along very well with Tracii Guns. He also said in an interview that "when Nikki told me about the band, I was really into the idea of writing another CD with the heavy sound of the Mötley Crüe album, but as we got more into recording, we had our drummer singing what was supposed to be the best song on the CD, when Nikki and Tracii were saying that our singer was the hot new thing, it just did not make sense to me."

Other projects[link]

Corabi performed songs on the Karl Cochran solo album Voodooland - Give Me Air released in 2005.

2005 also saw the release of the first Union DVD, Do Your Own Thing Live, containing two full-length concerts.

Union performed in Tokyo, Japan in January, 2005 and toured Europe in November and December 2005.

Corabi toured Europe with ESP in May 2005 and the USA with RATT in summer of 2005.

In February 2006, Corabi returned to Japan with ESP for live appearances and meet-and-greets with fans. ESP also performed in Australia in April 2006 for shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

In late 2006, Corabi played the last show with RATT fronted by Jizzy Pearl in Guadalajara, Mexico before the band reunited with original vocalist Stephen Pearcy.

Corabi contributed vocals on a song for Liberty N' Justice (a Christian group that does all-star rock albums) called "Doubting Thomas." The track was released in 2007 on the "Independence Day" album.

In the Summer of 2007, John toured with reunited RATT while on tour with Poison and Vains of Jenna.

In November 2007 John played 4 shows in Japan and 2 shows in Australia with Ratt while touring with Winger.

In December 2007, John returned to Mexico City with ESP (Eric Singer Project) for one show and meet-and-greets with fans. The set included songs from Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, Kiss and other favorites.

Early in 2008, John Corabi attended the MOTLEY CRUISE, a 4-day cruise in the Caribbean (Miami, Key West and Cozumel, MX) including performers such as Vince Neil, Skid Row, Ratt, Slaughter, Endeverafter and Lynam. On this cruise, Corabi joined Vince Neil on stage to perform "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC. This performance was a unique event as fans witnessed the two Mötley Crüe vocalists share the same microphone. As of August 2008, John Corabi has parted ways with Ratt in order to pursue his solo career.^[1]

Corabi makes a vocal appearance on Bruce Kulick's 2010 release "BK3". He covered "Life" by Siam Shade for the 2010 tribute album, Siam Shade Tribute.

Plans[link]

Corabi plans to release a solo album on Universal in May 2012 called John Corabi Unplugged followed by a tour performing songs from the bands he's worked with throughout his career. He just performed on the first Monsters of Rock cruise in February 2012.

Corabi played three dates, his first as a solo artist, in the Midwest with his new band in early December, 2009. Corabi performed songs from throughout his career, some of which have not been played live since his days with THE SCREAM and MÖTLEY CRÜE. Among the songs performed were "Hooligan's Holiday", "I Don't Care", "Outlaw", "Til Death Do Us Part", "Power To The Music", "Uncle Jack", "Love (I Don't Need It Anymore)", "Shine" and "Father, Mother, Son". A show in Nashville, Tennessee was performed on December 10, 2009 and broadcast on the Internet.^[2]

John Corabi is scheduled to perform in the Octoberfest show at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 1 opening for ex-Gun's & Roses drummer Steven Adler's solo band Adler's Appetite.^[3]
