This video contains the dances that Tabitha and Napoleon D'Umo have been nominated for for Best Choreography at the 2014 Emmys. The dances are shown in the order that I personally like them, from least to most. Gold Rush (Hip-Hop): Jasmine Harper is a fantastic hip-hop dancer but I have to admit that that's most of what I like about this piece. The story is fun, but I feel like there isn't enough variation. Also, when I see anything with a western theme all I can think about is how amazing Lauren Froderman and tWitch's hip-hop routine to My Chick Bad was. Run the World (Hip-Hop): Again, Jasmine is crazy good. I love seeing two female dancers doing a hip-hop routine together, I feel like it's something we don't see enough of on SYTYCD. The choreography is good but I'm once again struggling with variation. Puttin' on the Ritz (Hip-Hop): I love this. I think the continuously changing surrounding add so much to the routine. I loved the use of that long hallway with all the doorways. I enjoyed that NappyTabs included some of the shows judges and choreographers in the dance. What I do get from this routine that was causing me to not love the other two nominated pieces is variation, which allows this dance to really stand out for me. Overall: Never count out NappyTabs. Though I don't think there's enough variation in tempo, style, and movement in two of the three nominated routines, a dance that I may not personally love is still incredible choreography if it's done by these two. This video contains the dances that Derek Hough has been nominated for for Best Choreography at the 2014 Emmys. The dances are shown in the order that I personally like them, from least to most. Too Darn Hot (Jazz): I must admit that I'm not impressed with the choreography in this dance and I think Derek is capable of much better. The use of a prop can really take a piece to the next level if used effectively (more on this in my video for Christopher Scott), but I don't believe that was achieved with the table in this routine. Human (Contemporary): The raw emotion that is so beautifully shown throughout this piece is the best part. Without Amy Purdy's ability to make the audience feel for her struggle this dance would not have been half as effective. Again, I don't think the choreography is out of this world and I think that's because viewers know that Amy is capable of more. Ameksa (Flamenco): This is where we get to see Derek really shine. This piece is fantastic. The choreography is wonderful and the dancers executed it incredibly well. Derek was really able to push himself with this routine and the result was a really great piece. Overall: Derek is great. I don't think there's anyone who would say he isn't one of the best up and coming choreographers out there. Though he wasn't my pick for a win at the 2013 Emmys I certainly wasn't disappointed that he walked away with the award. This year I don't think the three routines Derek is nominated for are strong enough to secure another win. I do commend Derek for the work he did with Amy Purdy, I can't imagine how different and difficult it must have been to figure out how to choreograph for her and what her body is physically capable of. I do think that there are pieces with Amy that showcase stronger choreography than Too Darn Hot and Human (their Freestyle and Argentine Tango/Cha Cha) and wish those would have been nominated instead. The dances are shown in the order that I personally like them, from least to most. Stars (Contemporary): There is no doubt that the girl featured in this routine, Brilynn Rakes, is a wonderful dancer and that the choreography is very beautiful. I didn't think that Allison Holker had any part in choreographing this number and I'm wondering if it was included in her joint nomination with Derek Hough as just a way to nominate Derek for an additional routine besides the three for his individual nomination. Very pretty dance. Heart Cry (Contemporary): I absolutely love this dance. I have gone back and watched it many times since it was originally performed on Dancing with the Stars. Each dancer featured is phenomenal and they each bring such beauty to the piece. I didn't think I would enjoy the parts of the dance that were done in slow-motion, but I didn't mind them at all. Really impressed by this choreography by Allison and Derek. Overall: I always think it's a disadvantage when a nominee isn't nominated for three routines. Being nominated for only one or two dances limits what voters see and that to me will always be a disadvantage, no matter how good the nominated pieces are. Do I think that a choreography can still win with one or two nominated pieces? Absolutely. Do I think Allison and Derek will? No. These are strong numbers but not strong enough in a year that has some really fantastic choreographers and dances being featured. This video contains the dances that Derek Hough has been nominated for for Best Choreography at the 2013 Emmys. The dances are shown in the order that I personally like them, from least to most. Walking on Air (Jazz): I don't know exactly why, but I'm not much of a fan of this dance. I think it's very visually interesting but at the expense of the quality of dance. I appreciate routines that are a bit more simple. Don't get me wrong, Derek and Jaimie Goodwin are great in this, but it just doesn't intrigue me. Hey Pachuco (Quickstep): I remember seeing this dance and thinking there was no way that Shawn Johnson was going to lose the All-Star season of Dancing with the Stars. Unfortunately she did lose to Melissa Rycroft, who is also great but not at all on the same level as Shawn. Regardless, this is a really fun, energetic, and athletic routine that shows off the best of Shawn. Really enjoy this number. Para Los Rumberos (Mambo): Wow! This is such a great dance. The actual Mambo content is great, the lifts are great, the freeze in the middle of the piece is great. I love it! Certainly the best of the three routines included in Derek's nomination and a really strong dance from him. Overall: I love Derek Hough. I think he's a really amazing choreographer and am so glad he's being given the opportunity to explore other styles of dance on Dancing with the Stars. While I think his three nominated pieces are strong, I don't think all of them were his best. I would have preferred if his nomination would have included his Argentine Tango, Bhangra, or freestyle with Shawn. I do think it's time someone from the ballroom world wins for Best Choreography but in a year where there's so much great talent, I think he's going to fall short.
