Entry Title: "Laid Back in Lamu"
Entry:
"What a great week this was. Lamu is a little island off the North-East Coast of Kenya. Old Muslim-Swahili trading place, with tiny little alleyways winding through the tall coral buildings. No cars here, (except a few for police), donkeys is the way of travel, apparently there is 3000 of them. Ok, well not just donkeys, the beautiful dhow boats out on the water can hop you from island to island, as well as your feet, my week of bare feet took its toll (local people kept coming up to me saying 'you are true Lamu, bare feet, respect', little did they know I was barefoot as 2 tiny little cuts on my feet prevented me from getting my sandles on.....).
It is naturally stunning with a sand-dune backed beaches with as many palm trees and mango trees as you can shake a stick at. Near-perfect weather every day. And walking around getting lost in the tiny donkey or cat lined streets, with you're neck craned up looking at all the nooks and cranies of these tall old buildings, some crumbling apart, some lovingly restored.
But really the best thing was the people here. Whether it was the easy going waterside 'rastas', smiley and always friendly local Lamu-ites (ites??), or the chilled inlanders who had moved for work, you were never far from a happy face or a fun conversation. Many good friends made here, invited in to a Muslim wedding meal, or just random people's homes, such a great way to end the trip.
Hmm, not sure where I'm going with this but as a last minute choice, I'm very happy, as its one of the best weeks I've had while travelling. Last-week fatigue, that's just an excuse..
Oh and while I was here the referendum for the newly proposed constitution went off. Yes won with 67%. But more important, totally peaceful. After the problems in 2008, so much was made about possible problems (not here in Lamu) in the Rift Valley again. Lets hope this goes a long way to restoring some self-confidence to a country which deserves so much more :)"
