1st stage of Colombo Outer Circular Road complete The Colombo Outer Circular Road is being constructed from Kottawa to Kaduwela, Kaduwela to Kadawatha and Kadawatha to Kerawalapitiya in three stages. The road that links the three main expressways from Colombo to Katunayake, Matara and Kandy, marks a turning point in road development. A notable feature is the development of Kaduwela and Kadawatha areas as urban centres with the construction of the road. The construction of the road which will be 29.2 kilo metres in length is being carried out at the expenditure of 143 billion rupees. Currently the work under the 1st stage is successfully being carrying carried out. The first stage that consists of 11 kilo metres is being constructed at the expenditure of 27 billion rupees. Project Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said that arrangements have been made to vest this stretch in the public during January. He said that 3 ½ kilo metres out of the 11 kilo metre highway constitutes a flyover with the highest number of pillars. This road is linked to the highway network of the country. The construction of the northern Colombo expressway will start in January and it will be also linked to this highway. The second stage of the Outer Colombo Circular Road consists of 8.9 kilo metres and the construction will cost 49 billion rupees. It will be vested in the public before the end of next year. The third stage which consists of 9.3 kilo metres will be constructed at the expenditure of 67 billion rupees. The entire highway stretching from Kottawa to Kerawalapitiya will be vested in the public in 2015. The road is being constructed in an environmentally friendly manner minimising damage to property and it will provide a sustainable solution for the traffic congestion in many roads around Colombo. It will enable the motorists to reach their destinations in the minimum possible time.
