The Remover of Obstacles: The Ganesha of the Asian Art Museum
http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/ROHO/projects/asianart/ for all Asian Art Museum Oral History Project transcripts. This video is an excerpt from interviews with Alice Lowe and Terese Tse Bartholomew. In 2012 and 2013 the Regional Oral History Office (ROHO) of the Bancroft Library at the University of California Berkeley conducted a new series of interviews on the history of the Asian Art Museum (AAM)—the Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture. The AAM is the largest single museum devoted to Asian art in the United States and it holds one of the most significant collections of its kind in the world. Opened to the public in 1966, the origins of the AAM can be traced at least to the 1930s when Chicago real estate developer Avery Brundage began collecting rare works of Asian art and when the Golden Gate International Exhibition on Treasure Island displayed an important collection of Asian art. Since 1958 when the Brundage Collection was first promised to San Francisco through 1969 when the Asian Art Commission and the Asian Art Museum Foundation were established to 2003 when the AAM moved to San Francisco's Civic Center, the museum has transformed from a fledgling collection into a world-class museum. This oral history project documents that transformation. Copyright © UC Regents 2013 Regional Oral History Office, The Bancroft Library- published: 27 Jan 2014

Reflections on Yoga
Reflections on Yoga
This video explores the present practice of yoga through the personal stories of eight people with unique relationships to the discipline of yoga. Providing multiple perspectives on the practice as a way of highlighting its breadth and diversity, the interview subjects share their thoughts on yoga, the ways in which it transforms their lives, and the qualities that make it relevant across cultures and time. Tanuja Bahal is Executive Director of the India Community Center in Milpitas, and is an innovative professional with over 20 years of experience in non-profit strategy, program management, marketing, communications, and event management. Monica Desai Henderson is a dancer, storyteller, muralist, and Iyengar yoga teacher. Monica has been a member of the Asian Art Museum's Storytelling program for over a decade and is an active member of the museum community (both her parents are museum docents). Amanda Giacomini is a prolific artist and yoga teacher, and is co-owner of Yoga Toes Studio in Pt. Reyes. Amanda is one-third of the band, MC Yogi and the Sacred Sound Society. Nicholas Giacomini, aka MC Yogi, is an American hip hop musician and yogi. Nick's music style characteristically contains themes promoting Hindu philosophy and he is often referred to as a "beat happy Krishna crazed love magnet." Judith Hanson Lasater is a founder of the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, founding editor of Yoga Journal magazine, is current president of the California Yoga Teachers' Association, and has taught yoga since 1971. John Marino is a yoga teacher, massage therapist, and thirty-five year survivor of rheumatoid arthritis. John embodies the benefits of traditional therapies, such as Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine. Meena Srinivasan is an international educator and leader in the field of mindfulness in education, is core faculty for the Mindful Education Institute, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Mindfulness in Education Network. Kaitlin Quistgaard recently finished a seven year stint as Editor in Chief of Yoga Journal magazine. Prior to that, Kaitlin served as Technology Editor for Salon.com and Business Editor for Wired News and as a frequent contributor to Wired magazine.- published: 21 Feb 2014
