STORYLINE:
Argentine leaders and Irish diplomats met on Saturday to celebrate the150th anniversary of the Irish-born Argentine independence hero Admiral William-Guillermo Brown, who died on 3 March, 1857.
Brown, an adventurer and businessman born in County Mayo in 1777, arrived in Argentina at the outset of the war to secure independence from Spain.
He died a hero after defeating a Spanish flotilla in the River Plate estuary.
The ceremony took place at the Argentine Naval dockyard in downtown Buenos Aires.
Nilda Garre, Defence Minister of the Argentine Republic, stressed the importance of the legacy of the liberators as Argentina nears the 200th anniversary of the first declaration of a republic in 1810.
She spoke first in English, in honour of the Irish guests.
"Thanks for all our Irish friends who are here today, on this very important day", she said.
"The Brown legacy, one of the liberators of our homeland, the bi-century of the May revolution coming up and the imminent commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Malvinas war, are all special personalities and events which make us reflect on the destiny of our nation towards its third century of life", she added.
Later a military band played accompaniment to a lone bagpiper, in celebration of Ireland, the country which Brown left when he was seven years old.

Argentine hurling team prepare to visit Ireland
A bagpiper calls the players to begin and the men run onto the field, hurley sticks in hand.
And they are off, a player bouncing a hard leather ball, known by its gaelic name sliotar, on the end of his bat (hurley) as he runs onto the pitch.
The ancient Irish sport of hurling is believed to be the oldest field game in the world, according to the Gaelic Athletics Association.
It's a game of great skill.
Protected only by a helmet the players may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air.
But this is Buenos Aires not Dublin or Cork.
These players are not training to compete in the All-Ireland Hurling Final on September 8 2013, but they will play in an international hurling festival that will take place between the 18th and 21st of September in Galway, on Ireland's west coast.
The Buenos Aires hurling club are the only Spanish speaking team from among 16 from all over the world that are set to play Ireland's first international hurling festival.
With names like Quinn, Wade, Scally and Dolan, most of the 20 man team have never set foot in the Emerald Isle but are descendants of the founders of the club which was started by Irish expats generations ago.
Many arrived in Argentina as economic migrants during the Irish famine in 1845 - 1852, when blight destroyed virtually all of Ireland's potato crops. More than 1 million died and about 2 million emigrated to the United States and other countries.
Coach Eduardo Punter says playing hurling on Irish soil would be like a homecoming in honour of his great grandfather.
"My great-grandfather, Miguel Punter, an Argentine was one of the pioneers of this sport and of this Hurling club. He was part of a national team that was put together in 1922 to compete against the Irish, which was played here. He was a goalkeeper and well Argentina won, so now we have the situation that a rematch will take place. Really for me it is personally something that really touches me because after so much time to return and be connected to the sport that my grandfather played really it moves me very much."
Since the announcement of their participation in the tournament the South American hurling team have been quickly and adeptly coached into shape.
Twice weekly hard knock sessions have seen the former rugby and hockey players master the skills of the hurl (stick) and sliotar (ball).
They have their own Irish man at the helm, helping to guide their progress.
Michael Connery, from the hurling heartland of County Kilkenny, in the South East of Ireland moved to Argentina just over four years ago.
Having become a regular visitor to the shamrock adorned Hurling club, an outpost of Irish-ness among the Latin hubbub, he decided to tap into the clubs tradition and re-establish hurling training.
Connery says the Argentines' passion for sport and particularly many players with a foundation in hockey has made for paved the way for the teams rapid progress in just under 10 months.
"Everything was very basic for them, but they picked it up very quickly. I think it was due to the hockey skills which helped out a good bit, but like they have improved so quickly from when we started, like ten months ago" he says.
Argentina is home to South America's largest Irish community and the world's fifth largest among the Irish diaspora according to The Society for Irish Latin American Studies.
When they first arrived to the far flung South American country they retained a strong cultural identity and a big part of that was hurling.
Dan Scally's great grandfather Luis Scally was a keen hurler.
Now Dan is in training for the trip to Ireland.
He says the event is all about giving people like him, from all over the world a chance to experience the land of his forefathers.

The first half did not witness much of the flamboyant, open and attacking play with which the Barbarians are associated.
But it was a competitive affair on a damp, uninviting night in Limerick.

THE WOLFE TONES ADMIRAL WILLIAM BROWN

Admiral William Brown (also known in Spanish as Guillermo Brown) (22 June 1777 – 3 March 1857) was an Irish-born Argentine Admiral. Brown's victories in the Independence War, the Cisplatine War, and the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata earned the respect and appreciation of the Argentine people, and today he is regarded as one of Argentina's national heroes. Creator and first admiral of the country's maritime forces, he is commonly known as the "father of the Argentine

WOLFE TONES ADMIRAL WILLIAM BROWN LYRICS
From a County Mayo Town came a man of great renown
As a sailor and a soldier was none bolder
He went to America at an early age they say
As a cabin boy to sail the wide world over
Then adventure took him south to the Del La Plata Mouth
San Martin was on the route in Argentina
So three whaling ships he bought and Brazil and Spain he fought
And freedom they he sought for Argentina
Now Admiral William Brown you're a man of courage shown
And in battles fought the odds were all against you
But your Irish heart was strong and in memory still lives on
And in Ireland there are some that don't forget you
On St. Patrick's Day it's told you had many victories bold
And you defeated all invaders thugs and bullies
Then through the Pampas rose and you found a happy home--
Las Islas Malvinas Argentina
He had heard of Irish hands in the noble gallant bands
That helped to free the land called Argentina
He had heard with great acclaim the Patricios name
And fame, when in 1806 the British came for slaughter
And to this very day in the Argentine they say
The English ran away from Buenos Aires
To the islands further down and they took them for the crown --
Las Islas Malvinas Argentina
We remember William Brown and his land of great renown
He, invader of the islands from your country
When 1833 where by pirates force to flee
And in Ireland sure we know the story fully
And the people that went too to the Argentine when new,
To escape the English laws and wars and famine
They proved a loyal crew just like all the Irish do--
Las Islas Malvinas Argentina
The old colonial days and the cruel English ways
With her thunder plunder we will teach the natives
For the Brits are going to war just like Whitelock did before
With her ships & guns & drums & flags & banners
In the Empire days of old when they murdered for the gold
And paraded it around the streets of London
Oh no human rights were given to the natives dead or living--
Las Islas Malvinas Argentina
In the Argentine he died Father Fahey by his side,
Fifty-seven was the year his father mourned him
A hero of the nation he's remembered with elation,
Throughout the world were freedom still abounds
And the Southern Cross take note were bold Willie Bulfin wrote
"The Irish still support you Argentina"
With the Empire tumbling down let no Paddies back the crown--

Che Guevara interview Ireland 1964
"the first thing to note is that in my son's veins flowed the blood of Irish rebels"-----Ernesto Guevara Lynch
The Second thing to note on my behalf is that the lady speaking to CHE is an Air Hostess pulled from the plane he was on at the last minute, not a translator, and more so ,Che understood what she was saying in English anyway!
One of Che Guevara's forebears, Patrick Lynch, was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1715. He left for Bilbao, Spain, and traveled from there to Argentina. Francisco Lynch (Guevara's great-grandfather) was born in 1817, and Ana Lynch (his grandmother) in 1868. Her son, Ernesto Guevara Lynch (Guevara's father) was born in 1900. Guevara Lynch married Celia de la Serna y Llosa in 1927 (one of her non-lineal ancestors was José de la Serna e Hinojosa, Spanish viceroy of Peru)

Journalist Ross Kemp's Amazing Confrontation With Gunmen In Papua New Guinea
Actor and journalist Ross Kemp is not only an award-winning performer and investigative reporter, he's also a badass.
During a recent journey to Papua New Guinea, Kemp stumbled across a group of militia while searching for a local general. While the gunmen he finds are initially friendly and offer him food and some form of cigarette, they quickly turn confrontational and demand that Kemp get on his knees.
"They're going, 'get down on your hands and knees, get down on your hands and knees.' Now, you know at that point, you're going to become a victim," Kemp says.
Rather than submit to victimhood, Kemp proceeds to grab the barrels of whatever gun is pointed at him and insist repeatedly that he is not going to be killed that day by them or anyone else.
"Are you going to kill me?" he asks. "No one's going to f***ing kill me."
Out of respect for this ballsy move, Kemp suggest, his would be killers were moved to back down.
