Blu & Exile are an American hip hop duo, formed in 2007, composed of rapper Blu and hip hop producer Exile.
Blu and Exile first met in the mid-2000s while Blu was serving as a hype man for various hip hop groups including Slum Village, Platinum Pied Pipers, and Exile's own group, Emanon. He was personally introduced to Exile through Emanon's other member, Aloe Blacc. In 2007, Blu & Exile released their debut album, Below the Heavens, which was described by XXL as "one of 2007's most celebrated hip-hop releases". In 2012, the duo released their second album, Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them.
Exile means to be away from one's home (i.e. city, state or country), while either being explicitly refused permission to return and/or being threatened with imprisonment or death upon return. It can be a form of punishment and solitude. It is common to distinguish between internal exile, i.e., forced resettlement within the country of residence, and external exile, deportation outside the country of residence. Although most commonly used to describe an individual situation, the term is also used for groups (especially ethnic or national groups), or for an entire government. Terms such as diaspora and refugee describe group exile, both voluntary and forced, and government in exile describes a government of a country that has been forced to relocate and argue its legitimacy from outside that country. Exile can also be a self-imposed departure from one's homeland. Self-exile is often depicted as a form of protest by the person that claims it, to avoid persecution or legal matters (such as tax or criminal allegations), an act of shame or repentance, or isolating oneself to be able to devote time to a particular pursuit. Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile."
Below the Heavens is the debut studio album by American hip hop duo Blu & Exile, released July 17, 2007 on independent record label Sound in Color. It serves as Blu's debut album, while Exile had previously released his solo album Dirty Science and two albums as a member of the duo Emanon.
Blu provides rap vocals on all of the album's songs, while Exile produces all of the songs and raps just on the bonus track "I Am..". In addition, the album features guest performers Ta'Raach, Aloe Blacc, and Miguel. The album received universal acclaim from critics and is widely considered an underground classic; many labeled Blu a "rising star" due to the album.
Below The Heavens has been reissued twice since going out of print in 2009. In 2011, the album was reissued on Vinyl Call Records. On January 21, 2014, the album was reissued on Fat Beats Records on compact disc with three bonus tracks, limited edition cassette with one bonus track, and vinyl with a 7 inch vinyl with two unreleased instrumentals.

This song is undoubtedly a hip hop classic, and this version simply put this joint as one of my favorite songs of all time. Poetic and soulful. Thanks to Blu and Exile for dropping this hip hop masterpiece! It samples Aretha Franklin - One Step Ahead. Enjoy, Peace!

The producer-MC tandem's latest offering, Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them comes out of nowhere and I couldn't be happier. The LP was apparently recorded in 2009 and after getting about halfway through it, I can attest that it's a worthy follow up to Blu & Exile's debut. Hello! So yeah, as I promised here's the album! In my opinion it's a great album but for some of you it might be kinda weird. There are plenty of cuts from radio (propably made by himself) and it also says something if u really listen to it. I'll past a text describing the whole album: "Radio is not your average instrumental album. Exile did not want to just put beats on a record. He wanted everything to be unique and different, from the starting concept to the final message of Radio. Sampling vocals off the radio, Exile overcame the challenge and succeeded in creating a positive message on an instrumental album. As Exile says, "Good and evil are present on the radio. With this record I express love in contrast to evil. I did not want to put an album out showing only my talent... I needed...

It's been a long 5 year hiatus since the last Blu & Exile collaboration. Since their last project together, the brilliant Below The Heavens in 2007 the pair have been exceptionally busy on an array of individual projects, with both continuing to gather huge plaudits and an ever-expanding fanbase in the process. Their latest release, Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, has had a relatively controversial start, with Blu releasing an un-mastered raw version of the record on Bandcamp, prior to the official release through Fat Beats. Some loved the idea, others didn't, but with the Exile-polished version now on general release, DUBCNN caught up with the duo at their show for More Bounce in Manchester, in what was their debut UK show as Blu and Exile. In this segment Blu gives Hard Knock TV insight into his new album and Major label debut, No York, which is going through its mixing stages right now and will be out this summer. Blu states "It's not a State, It's a state of mind, No York state of mind, it a West Coast album with no references to New York" Blu says he has enough songs to make it a triple album and that he is experimenting with a new sound with more of an electric hip hop feel, in the vain of his Johnson and Jonson project. Miss Special interviews Exile for Special Sundays Radio Show on KSFS at San Francisco State University. Last Wednesday before his show at 330 Ritch with Blu, I got to chat with one of my favorite producers, Exile. We spoke about the craziest thing he ever sampled, his second album with Fashawn "The Ecology", a new project as Emanon with Aloe Blacc and a Dag Savage project (including a free mixtape beforehand). We also spoke about working early with Miguel, his phone call with Jay Electronica, and his fascination with the radio.

Miss Special interviews Blu for Special Sundays Radio Show on KSFS at San Francisco State University. Before his show last night in SF I got to sit down with Blu and talk about a few things. We spoke about working with Quelle and Chuuwee on songs dropping later this year, the status of his "UCLA" project with Madlib and the idea behind the song "Doin Somethin" with U-N-I, Pac Div, TiRon, Ayomari, J*Davey etc. We also spoke about his newest release "Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them" including the reason for the "un-mastered" sound, if there will be a mastered version and why the tracks were from 2009. In addition, we spoke about the samples he's chosen for Exile, the many more songs from "No York" and hard copies of "Below The Heavens".

I was cold hearted and young, a dumb kid with a gun
Cause fun days don't last, the last nigga to laugh
So rap fell on my tongue, numb feelings remain
And pain comes and it goes
But my wounds shows the room where my pops beat my moms
Moms screamin' for help, myself hot as a sun
Cold hearted and young, a dumb kid with a gun
That I got from my pops top drawer
When he left my momma twice in a week
My momma lifeless and weak, spendin' her nights in the sheets
With seed killer number (one)
Seed killer number (two)
Seed killer number (three)
Got heat from the newborns scorned brother
Blu black hearted and young
Raps fell off his tongue
Numb feelings remain
The pain comes and it goes
But my wounds show the tomb that now shelters my boy
My boy needed my help, myself not in the game
The game heartless and young
Dumb niggas with guns cause fun days don't last
The last nigga that blast got shots all in his back
Wrath fell on his soul but in my soul he remains
Pain comes and it goes
But my wounds show the moon shining off of his blood
His blood ran through his moms
His moms ran outside
5 niggas with guns
Seed killer number (one)
Seed killer number (two)
Seed killer number (three)
Pulled the heat and he was through
Threw dirt on his casket his mom will re-mask it
Still couldn't hide tears years pass her son
Numb feelings remain
Pain comes and it goes
But my wounds show the groom that still married my mom
My mom still had a son
Dumb kid with a gun, that I got from my pops
Top drawer when he left
My momma fightin' for years
My momma fightin' her tears
Now she gotta explain the game of her life to her son
But the sun still shines
Nine children and a newborn scorn brother two
Blu, life isn't young
Dumb kid with a tongue, that I got from Hip Hop
But she left me for you, so I'm a give her to you
