In the South African, Namibian, Zambian, Botswana and Zimbabwean context, the term Coloured (also known as Bruinmense, Kleurlinge or Bruin Afrikaners in Afrikaans) refers to an heterogeneous ethnic group who possess ancestry from Europe, various Khoisan and Bantu tribes of Southern Africa, West Africa, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaya, India, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Saint Helena.
Besides the extensive combining of these diverse heritages in the Western Cape — in which a distinctive 'Cape Coloured' and affiliated Cape Malay culture developed — in other parts of Southern Africa, their development has usually been the result of the meeting of two distinct groups. Genetic studies suggest the group has the highest levels of mixed ancestry in the world, second only to the United States of America. However, the maternal (female) contribution to the Coloured population, measured by mitochondrial DNA studies, was found to come mostly from the Khoisan population.
In KwaZulu-Natal, most Coloureds come from British and Zulu heritage, while Zimbabwean Coloureds come from Shona or Ndebele mixing with British and Afrikaner settlers. Griqua, on the other hand, are descendants of Khoisan and Afrikaner trekboers. Despite these major differences, the fact that they draw parentage from more than one 'naturalised' racial group means that they are 'coloured' in the southern African context. Such people did not necessarily self-identify this way; some preferred to call themselves 'black' or 'Khoisan' or just 'South African'. The history of racial segregation and labelling in South Africa and neighbouring countries has meant that the governments placed all such 'mixed race' people in a certain relationship together. The imperial and apartheid governments categorized them as Coloureds. In addition, other ethnic groups also traditionally viewed them as a separate group.
Cocteau Twins were a Scottish alternative rock band active from 1979 to 1997, known for innovative instrumentation and atmospheric, non-lyrical vocals. The original members were Elizabeth Fraser (vocals), Robin Guthrie (guitar, drum machine) and Will Heggie (bass guitar), who was replaced by Simon Raymonde (also bass guitar) early in the band's career.
While the entire band earned much critical praise, Elizabeth Fraser's distinctive vocals received the most attention. At times barely decipherable, Fraser seemed to veer into glossolalia and mouth music. Allmusic reviewer Ned Raggett writes that "part of her appeal is how she can make hard-to-interpret lyrics so emotionally gripping."
Robin Guthrie and Will Heggie (bass guitar), both from Grangemouth, Scotland, formed the band in 1979. At a local disco, Nash, they met Elizabeth Fraser, who would eventually provide vocals. The band's influences at the time included Joy Division, The Birthday Party, Sex Pistols, Kate Bush, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The band was named after the song "The Cocteau Twins" by fellow Scotsmen 'Johnny and the Self-Abusers' (who later renamed themselves Simple Minds; the song "The Cocteau Twins" was also re-penned as "No Cure"). Their debut recording, Garlands (released by 4AD Records in 1982), was an instant success, as was the subsequent Lullabies EP. Around that time, NME's Don Watson compared the style of the band to goth bands like Gene Loves Jezebel and Xmal Deutschland.
Beverley Knight MBE (born 22 March 1973) is an English singer, songwriter, and record producer who released her debut album in 1995. Heavily influenced by soul greats such as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin, Knight has released six studio albums to date. Widely labelled as one of Britain's greatest soul singers, Knight is best known for her hit singles "Greatest Day", "Get Up!", "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" and "Come as You Are".
In 2006, Knight solidified her transmission into the mainstream by starring in BBC One music TV show, Just the Two of Us, a role she reprised in 2007. After releasing a platinum-selling compilation album in 2006, Knight went on to tour the UK with a reformed Take That. She has also hosted four series of the [[BBC Radio 2] show Beverley's Gospel Nights, which explores the origins and impact of gospel music. To date the show has run for four seasons and has featured interviews with stars such as Destiny's Child and Shirley Caesar.
Knight is an ambassador for many charities such as Christian Aid and has travelled to areas affected by disease and poverty to help raise awareness. She is an active campaigner for anti-Aids organisations such as the Stop AIDS Campaign and The Terrence Higgins Trust and is also a vocal campaigner against homophobic lyrics in urban music. On Saturday 15 August 2009 she performed live at the 4th annual UK Black Pride event in Regents Park.
Laurent Garnier (also known as Choice), (born 1 February 1966, Boulogne-sur-Seine, France) is a French techno music producer and DJ. Garnier began DJ-ing in Manchester during the late 1980s. By the following decade, he had a broad stylistic range, able to span deep house, Detroit techno, trance and jazz. He added production work to his schedule in the early 1990s, and recorded several albums.
During the late 1970s, Garnier discovered clubbing with his brother in Paris, where his family lived. He loved disco but also listened to all other contemporary musical genres including reggae, funk, and punk. At the age of 16, Garnier had started recording and mixing music on tape recorders.
In 1984, Garnier started working as a waiter for the French Embassy in London. He stayed there for a year and a half before moving to Manchester in 1986. Living in England he discovered the booming UK house scene and started DJing.
In 1987, he discovered the The Haçienda in Manchester, and met Mike Pickering the resident DJ. Chicago house and Detroit techno became popular, and Garnier started mixing there under the name of DJ Pedro.
This is a story called, When is enough, enough?
When that line is drawn in the sand
and your birthright is more than circumstance.
Well, instead of extending that American helping hand,
Sometimes we extend the iron fist, to brothers and sisters caught in the mix.
Check it out.
Let me kill, a little bit more,
Let me have, a little bit more,
Le me steal, a little bit more,
A little bit more, a little bit more.
You got power, need a little bit more,
How bout people, need a little bit more,
Oh, the police, need a little bit more,
Need a little bit more, need a little bit more.
Let me build a bigger bomb for you, let me build a bigger bomb for me.
Lets blow em all away, Third nations got pay.
Let me build a bigger bomb for you, let me build a bigger bomb for me.
Lets blow em all away, I'll blow them all away
When will it be enough?
(x4)
Let me crush, a little bit more
Let me sell, a little bit more,
Let me rape, a little bit more, A little bit more, a little bit more.
You've got children, need a little bit more, Little babies, need a little bit more,
Your inner soul, need a little bit more, Need a little bit more, need a little bit more.
Let me build a bigger bomb for you, let me build a bigger bomb for me.
Lets blow them all away, Third nations got pay.
Let me build a bigger bomb for you, let me build a bigger bomb for me.
Lets throw em all away, I'll throw them all away.
When will it be enough? When will it be enough?
Gotta have everything. Everything.
When will it be enough? (x18)
It's never enough, oh its never, never
Let me kill, a little bit more
Let me steal, a little bit more
Let me rape, a little bit more
Don't run us off the road,
We'd just like ourselves a lane
We've got nothing to lose,
cause our race is not in vain
So treat us like a dog
because we eat from your floor
We'll take care of ourselves
Cause you're taking care of yours
We raise a new flag as we dance on your street
we may be your children, but we wont stay in our seat
Where go we, it's unknown
Where go we, it's unwritten
Where go we, come what may
But how much can it hurt to stop and think
We're the pulse of the fire
throwing gas back on the pyre
watch those flames crach right back with their attitudes to inspire
we're the slaves to the grind, in the belly of the beast
gotta eat your way out now, if you, if you want to succeed
we clear a new path so we can share this view
we may be your children but we wont wear your costume
Where go we, it's unknown
Where go we, it's unwritten
Where go we, come what may
but how much can it hurt to stop and think
Cause i don't mind a little dose of pain
We raise a new flag so we can share this view
Where go we, it' unknown
Where go we, it's unwritten
Where go we, come what may
but how much can it hurt to stop and think
it' unknown, where go we
it' unwritten, where go we come what may
but how much time does it need to take
cause i don't mind a little does of pain
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's gone to deep.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's later than you think.
I need your opinion like I need a bullet in my head.
You didn't care then, so why care now unless you're cashing in on the dividends.
I'm not gonna sit by the side of the road. Turn your cheek.
I know what I saw, I'll forget what I'm told. - That's not me.
I'm not gonna sit by the side of the road, watching brothers die, or pretend it's kosher.
Cause that soldier could well have been me.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's gone to deep.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's later than you think.
(x2)
I had plans to be an officer, till I realized our guns point in the wrong direction.
So drop the bombs on the other bombs,
destroy the missiles put away your guns.
and stop acting like big children, I can't take this heat anymore.
I'm not gonna be the calm in the storm. That's not me.
I'm not gonna take it anymore. Not in my name.
I'm not gonna sit by the side of the road,
watch my sisters sell their souls.
But I don't believe all the things they say.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's gone to deep.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's later than you think.
(x2)
It's revolutionary to want this thing called peace
As fevers and revenge spread like a state of emergency
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's gone to deep.
Pull out, pull out, pull out, it's later than you think.
American Politicians have scarred our good name
There are those too scared to see the terror threat hyperbole
Were not all blood thirsty, ignorant, flag waving government sycophants
See through the lies, in corporate ties
We singing we want a change
And ignoring the Log in our eye, sending thousands off to die
watch them lose their ass on page 23, then they save their face on your TV
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Questioning what they are selling me
Questioning what they are selling me
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Questioning what they have done to me
what they have done to me
Hell bent on Nation building, Governments run amuck
In the name homeland security, its the worldwide manifest destiny
International bully, with a disregard for sovereignty
I see health care shutting down but, Baghdad needs a mall downtown
how can we, how can we, how can we..
Well, how can we find the speck in our brothers eye,
when were the ones going blind, going blind, going blind
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Questioning what they are selling me
Questioning what they are selling me
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Questioning what they have done to me
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Questioning what they have done to me
what they have done to me
How can we save anybody else when we cant save ourselves
How can we change anybody else, when we fail to change ourselves.
How can we give away what we don't already have, anyway
I got to be the good American
I don't want to be no President
Got to be the good American
I don't want to be no Patriot
Our darkest fears, our wars alone, our war is here, our wars alone
Now we cant waste, we cant waste our feelings on if they will hate or love us
we will overcome
Got to be the good American
Got to be the good American
Relgion serves a purpose - this I realize
but when they organize it - when they commit the crimes,
the crimes upon the weak and the crimes upon the poor
spreading filthy money baskets under stained glass windows
and pockets full of water are placed at the door
and they call it holy - you get your money's worth
what it's worth? Oh I'll tell you what it's worth
'cause they go away, we go home to repent - yeah
So let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
Time is wasted in seeking out a redemption's bliss
'cause I won't be afraid, and I can't be ashamed
of my life - or my past mistakes
'cause they go away, we go home to repent
So let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
Pockets full of water placed at the door
they call it holy - you get your money's worth
what it's worth? Oh I'll tell you what it's worth
let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
let's stop feeding the rich
they've got enough to live
stop feed - stop feed - stop feed - stop feed -
Do you know what they say
Do you know what they say, what they say about you
Do you know what they do
Do you know what they do when you leave the room
(x2)
Never thought twice about holding your tongue
Once upon a time you were so young
Everywhere you carried around your soul
In the night they stole it, left you skin and bones â knife in your back
Laughing aloud at your expense, fed themselves on innocence â knife in your back
Their attacks inserted doubt, now you're stranded in the cold with a knife in your back
Do you know what they feel
Do you know what they feel, what they feel for you
Do you know how they play
Do you know how they play, how they play inside you
Do you know what they steal
Do you know what they steal, what they steal from you
Do you know how they prey
Do you know how they prey, how they prey upon you
Never thought twice about holding your tongue
Once upon a time you were so young
Everywhere you carried around your soul
In the night they stole it, left you skin and bones â knife in your back
Laughing aloud at your expense, fed themselves on innocence â knife in your back
Their attacks inserted doubt, now you're stranded in the cold with a knife in your back
Tell me did you grow after all these years?
Giving up control and buying into fear
Nights slip into mornings and days remain unchanged
but their mighty appetites will not be tamed.
Do you care, Do you care
Do you care what they say
Do you care what they say, what they say about you
Do you care how they prey
Do you care how they prey, how they prey upon you
Do not think to punish will be your protection
or that the crown will save your head...
No matter where I go, your always there
'Cause no matter where I sit man, I sit in fear
A Marshall law has taken effect,
They stole the right to be defiant, while we're turning our heads.
The informed citizen became un-American,
for reading a book instead of watching the television.
Supporting peace and not the president.
Rather die on the cross than for a fucking republican.
Speaks about sacrifice, National honor,
Take one for the team, man just do what you're ordered.
Well I won't go out like that. Don't care what you say.
Bet that ass would think different if you're at the draft age.
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Watching You)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Cause you're watching Me)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Watching You)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Best start watching Me)
The simple fact remains, that it's more than just me.
There's a whole generation taking over the streets.
Ready to smash back the system that made our lives useless.
Masses think you're Jesus, but we know that you're Judas.
Slaving us out, hate all the bosses.
Put in all the work, but you make all the profits.
No more bullshit talk, reform is just retarded,
Start a revolution, get the party started.
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Watching You)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Cause you're watching Me)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Watching You)
A.M.E.R.I.K.A. (Watching you watch me)
Know you by waste and not by your face.
Not by introduction, not by handshake.
Not by the things that you own, but the things you dispose
It's not a case of theft but a case of loan
Scavenger have you heard
I'm sifting through your trash still I'm gonna make it last well
scavenger survivor's find a way
Still sticky fingers find sticky situations
but in the wake of swept rugs we all need assistance.
So now I'm living off the spoils of leftover generations
equipped with wit and long legs if I need them
to hold my ground but not be found
I'm quicker than the wind but half as
Scavenger have you heard, sifting through your trash
Still I'm gonna make it last well
Scavenger survivor's find a way
Scavenger have you heard
Sifting through your trash,
Still I'm gonna make it last well
Scavenger survivors find a way
they find a way, they find a way, a way
Are you done give me some, Cause I'm fucken hungry
don't need pride with an empty belly.
Got no shame cause I know we're all whores,
Trying to pull the hustle, just trying to pull the
Scavenger. Have you heard
Sifting through your trash still
I'm gonna make it last well
Tokyo, Tokyo... Tokyo Tokyo
Cause im feelin' great in Tokyo
I believe, the place I belong to, is the best my baby.
It's a place where I can be happy, where I can be dancing, I can be dancing now.
This is what I can feel, run away, turn away, never from Japan.
Easy to love, I want just to play in the game forever.
I don't wanna live in Bruxles or in New York, I just wanna live in Tokyo.
I don't wanna go to London, or Africa, cause im feelin' great in Tokyo.
I don't wanna live in Washington, or in Spain, I just wanna live in Tokyo.
I don't wanna go to Paris, or Germany, cause im fellin' great in Tokyo
Let me stay, never ask me to leave now, I'll be by my baby.
If you are, if you'll be arround me, when enjoying the sound and we can be dancing now.

Summer Time (Clarita)
I can feel the summer’s heat
Only in the summer will I see
The blossoming and the talking trees
Smell of raspberries
Roses lingering a soft fragrance
Sweet breeze with such tenderness
Almost taste the morning dew
Sky painted the perfect blue
Chorus
I got summer in my mind
Cotton clouds in a summer sky
Watching how they float by, changing each time
Like a child
Sitting underneath a tree
Reading my favourite poetry
Buzz of a bumble bee, so happily
Feels like the perfect dream
It’s a beautiful summers day
Blooming flowers in full array
All the children want to play
Glad that they’re not in school today
Watching the early flight of butterflies
The beauty of mornings sunrise
Sometimes looks like heaven shines
Swallows jetting through the skies
Chorus
I got summer in my mind
Cotton clouds in a summer sky
Watching how they float by, changing each time
Like a child
Sitting underneath a tree
Reading my favourite poetry
Buzz of a bumble bee, so happily
When you break everything around,
It’s hard, hard to breathe.
And it’s hard to rebuild
What you’ve never seen.
Can you tell me I’ll be just fine?
Will I be better now?
Everyone is watching me.
I can feel my chest rot. It crumbles like the diamonds in your eyes did.
And sometimes when I wonder or I wish for something else, my nightmares come out
to haunt me, and they pull me back down.
I'm not sure if my heart belongs here anymore.
I'm not sure if my heart belongs here anymore.
I don't know how to tell you that you're holding onto nothing, and nothing is here to stay.
And if you'd like you can stay a while and you can sit by me. Yea you can sit by me.
I quit treading water years ago and I've been drowning ever since.
I know we’re getting old and we’re falling away,
but I hope that this will change.
I can feel the pressure crushing down on my face,
but I hope that this will change.
So when you say goodbye, well I hope you know it means
that I will see you on the other side.
And keep that promise to your mom you made
because she’ll be the only one to catch you when you fall.
No one to catch you when you fall.
Do you remember that note I wrote when we were young?
“Hey man, I’ve been holding up just fine. I’ve been holding up."
So when you say goodbye, well I hope you know it means
that I will see you on the other side.
And keep that promise to your mom you made
because she’ll be the only one to catch you when you fall.
