Einstein and Szilard's Bomb (Part 1) - Einstein predicts atomic bomb impossible
Einstein's great equation E=MC^2 explains how the sun burns but can it be used to create a bomb? Einstein doubted whether that energy could ever be released. By 1935 he was convinced it would never be practical. At the Winter Session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Pittsburgh, he is quoted as telling journalists: "The likelihood of transforming matter into energy is something akin to shooting birds in the dark in a country where there are only a few birds."

Leó Szilárd
Leó Szilárd was an Austro-Hungarian physicist and inventor who conceived the nuclear chain reaction in 1933, patented the idea of a nuclear reactor with Enrico Fermi, and in late 1939 wrote the letter for Albert Einstein's signature that resulted in the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb. en.wikipedia.org

The Ascent of Man (5 of 6) Knowledge or Certainty - Jacob Bronowski
Leo Szilard "Into this pond were flushed the ashes of some four million people. And that was not done by gas. It was not done by arrogance. It was done by dogma. I was done by ignorance. When people believe that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave. This is what men do when they aspire to the knowledge of gods." Continuing Dr Bronowski's personal view of man's major discoveries and the evolution of his thought. This programme highlights the achievement of twentieth century physics in proving that absolute certainty inside or outside science is outside our grasp.

Einstein and Szilard's Bomb (Part 2) - Leo Szilard convinces Einstein to build The Bomb
In the summer of 1939 Albert Einstein was on holiday in a small resort town on the tip of Long Island. His peaceful summer, however, was about to be shattered by a visit from an old friend and colleague from his years in Berlin. The visitor was the physicist Leo Szilard. He had come to tell Einstein that he feared the Nazis could soon be in possession of a terrible new weapon and that something had to be done. Szilard believed that recent scientific breakthroughs meant it was now possible to convert mass into energy. And that this could be used to make a bomb. If this were to happen, it would be a terrible realisation of the law of nature Einstein had discovered some 34 years earlier.

Dogma or Science, a few words by Jacob Bronowski
A response to Ben Stein's "Science leads to killing people" (youtube.com formulated in 1973 by Jacob Bronowski. This video is a clip from his famous documentary series: The Ascent of Man, episode 11 - Knowledge or Certainty. Bronowski talks about his friend Leo Szilard, his views on science, ethics and the human condition. A little background on Leo Szilard: He was a Hungarian-American physicist who conceived the nuclear chain reaction and worked on the Manhattan Project that built the first atomic bomb. As a survivor of a devastated Hungary after World War I, and having witnessed the subsequent terror of the Reds and the Whites, Szilárd developed an enduring passion for the preservation of human life and freedom, especially freedom to communicate ideas. He hoped that the US government, which prior to World War II had staunchly opposed the bombing of civilians, would not use nuclear weapons because of their potential for use against civilian populations. Szilárd hoped that the mere threat of such weapons would force Germany and/or Japan to surrender. He drafted the Szilárd petition advocating demonstration of the atomic bomb. However with the European war concluded and the US taking heavy casualties in the Pacific, the new US President Harry Truman sided with advisors and chose to use atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki over the protestations of Szilárd and other scientists.

Beyond The Cloud trailer
Highly Sprung return with their distinctive style of performance blending dance and theatre to tell a story unlike any other. A true story that changed the world forever. Leo Szilard, the man attributed with the title, 'Inventor of the Nuclear Bomb' started his working life in Germany alongside fellow Jew, Albert Einstein. When the Nazi's came to power they only had one option- RUN!

Men Destroying Worlds- The Atomic Bomb
Men Destroying Worlds is a documentary I made for class about the making and use of the atomic bomb during World War 2. The documentary mostly focuses on the scientists, Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard, who informed FDR about the use of the bomb but then later tried but failed to warn about the dangers of using such a bomb on humanity. Nuclear warfare is a real issue and it has the potential to wipeout the world population. Enjoy.
