In America, a sideshow is an extra, secondary production associated with a circus, carnival, fair or other such attraction.
There are four main types of classic sideshow attractions:
The "Ten-in-One" offers a program of ten sequential acts under one tent for a single admission price. The ten-in-one might be partly a freak show exhibiting "human oddities" (including "born freaks" such as midgets, giants or persons with other deformities, or "made freaks" like tattooed people, fat people or "human skeletons"- extremely thin men often "married" to the fat lady, like Isaac W. Sprague). However, for variety's sake, the acts in a ten-in-one would also include "working acts" who would perform magic tricks or daredevil stunts. In addition, the freak show performers might also perform acts or stunts, and would often sell souvenirs like "giant's rings" or "pitch cards" with their photos and life stories. The ten-in-one would often end in a "blowoff" or "ding," an extra act not advertised on the outside, which could be viewed for an additional fee. The blowoff act would be described provocatively, often as something deemed too strong for women and children, such as pickled punks.
Barry Biggs (born 1947, although some accounts list 1953;St. Andrew, Jamaica) is a reggae singer, best known in the UK for his cover of the Blue Magic song, "Sideshow", which got to #3 in the UK Singles Chart in 1977.
Biggs worked as an recording engineer and cameraman with the Jamaican Broadcasting Company, and also spent time as a member of the band the Astronauts, before becoming the lead singer for Byron Lee's Dragonaires.
It was at Lee's Dynamic Sounds studio (where he also worked as a producer and engineer) that Biggs recorded his first Jamaican hit, a cover of The Osmonds' "One Bad Apple". He broke through to international success in 1976 with "Work All Day", which had been recorded seven years earlier. Biggs had six hit singles on the UK Singles Chart between 1976 and 1981, the most successful of these, "Sideshow", reaching #3 in January 1977. He recorded two songs with Bunny Lee; "Sincerely" and "You're Welcome" which did well in reggae charts. He topped the reggae chart in the UK with "Wide Awake in a Dream" and "A Promise is a Comfort to a Fool".
Emily Skinner (also known as Emily Scott Skinner) (born June 29, 1970) is an American musical theatre actress and singer. She has performed in such Broadway shows as Side Show, James Joyce's The Dead, The Full Monty, Dinner at Eight and, most recently, in Billy Elliot. She has performed Off-Broadway and regionally and sung on the concert stage and on recordings.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Skinner attended college at Carnegie Mellon University. She moved to New York in 1992 and took part in a workshop of Jekyll and Hyde. A few years later, she created the role of "Emily" (young Scrooge's love interest) in the 1994 musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol at the Paramount Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
In 1997, Skinner joined the original Broadway cast of Jekyll and Hyde as an ensemble member and understudy for the leads of Emma and Lucy. During previews, Linda Eder, who played Lucy, developed laryngitis, and Skinner sang some of Lucy's songs from backstage, while Eder acted and sang some songs onstage. Other Broadway credits include "Side Show" (1997), James Joyce's The Dead (1999; with Christopher Walken), The Full Monty (2001), Dinner at Eight, the Encores! stagings of the Gershwin musical Pardon My English, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and "No Strings", all at New York City Center, and Broadway Actor's Fund benefit concert performances of Dreamgirls and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Alice Ripley is an American actor, singer, songwriter, and mixed media artist known for her various roles on Broadway in musicals, including the Pulitzer Prize winning Next to Normal (2009 Tony Award, Best Actress in a Musical) and Side Show (1998 Tony nomination). She has also written and produced albums with her band, RIPLEY.
RIPLEY's new single, "Beautiful Eyes", was released on 2/21/12 and the accompanying music video on 4/17/12.
On 2/15/11, co-producer Sh-K-Boom Records released Alice Ripley Daily Practice, Volume 1, a stripped-down collection of acoustic rock covers with Ripley accompanying herself on guitar.
Ripley stars opposite Kathleen Chalfant in the upcoming feature, Isn't It Delicious?, by Aquapio Films, a black comedy to be released this year.
Ripley went to DePauw University, majoring in Vocal Performance. She then transferred to Kent State University and received a BFA in Musical Theatre.
While at DePauw University and Kent State University, Ripley performed in numerous stage productions. Her first paid acting job was summer stock at the Red Barn Theatre in Frankfort, IN. Following college, she was active in community theatre in San Diego, CA, and subsequently received her Actor's Equity card at the La Jolla Playhouse through a production of Silent Edward, a musical written by Des McAnuff, who was Artistic Director of the La Jolla Playhouse at the time and who would later direct Ripley in her Broadway debut, The Who's Tommy.
I ain't got no fun today
It's just like yesterday, oh yeah
Only different shades of grey
I'm bored right out of my skull
I'd have to get high just to be dull
I'm institutional
My TV screen spins around and around
And around and around
I need a sideshow
Some kinda creepshow
They ran the circus out of town
But the ring master said:
"Boy, you can stick around"
I pay to see all the freaks
Some finger licking chicken-eating geek
Hey, that sounds cool to me
I just want to step inside
I want a scary ride, oh yeah
See Jeckyll turn to Hyde
I fell my head spinning round and around
and around and around
I need a sideshow, oh yeah
Some kinda creepshow, oh yeah
I just want someplace to go, oh yeah
I tried to be the circus clown
But even my monkey wouldn't hang around
And the hunchback midget and his twisted friends
Offer me a world of thrills that never end
I need a sideshow
Some kind of freaky show
Down where the neon glows
Just like a psychedelic video
Or a 24 hour party, go go go
Not a gozio, no
I need a sideshow
I have seen the streets and alleyways
Of a million faceless towns
The camera comes, the camera goes
Filming our blues for the late night news
We gather round
Never searching for our innocence
Our faith, our truth, our love
They're only there when things go wrong
Filming our blues for the late night news
We gather round
Show us peace and understanding
Brother love for fellow man
Cure us, we are sick from violence
In your sideshow of life
Impartiality is like
A coin they have to spend
The currency of the chosen few
They place their bets
Switch on your sets
There's world disasters by the minute
They tell us on the hour
And when we think we've paid our dues
They've filmed our blues for the late night news
We gather round
Show us peace and understanding
Brother love for fellow man
Cure us, we are sick from violence
In your sideshow of life
Sideshow of life
When it's late at night and you're all alone
With the one you love
Turn on the late night news and cry
Tears for all the lost and lonely people
Innocents in prime time
(Tragedies) of our life
(Tragedies) of our life
People stare and then they walk away
But there's always a few who'll stay
From the state I watch 'em close their eyes
Like a little kid trying to hide
Like they're somewhere ain't supposed to be
Watching something they ain't supposed to see
Giving in to the undertow
In the dark at the sideshow
I'm the singer at the sideshow
It's a place that orphans go
Far away from the bright lights
Hard to find on a dark night
Another truly troubled troubadour
Writing songs to even up the score
A tune for every single body flow
And I sing 'em at the sideshow
Who likes to think about their pain
Most people would avoid the rain
A sunny song will help you make it through
But constant whistling is hard to do
Too many songs about happiness
Leave me sad, lonely, and depressed
A million miles from the radio
You can find me at the side show
I make my living at the sideshow
It's a place that orphans go
Far away from the bright lights
Hard to find on a dark night
Another truly troubled troubadour
Writing songs to even up the score
A tune for every single body blow
And I sing 'em at the side show
I make a living at the sideshow
It's a place that the wounded go
Far away from the Bright lights
Hard to find on a dark night
YOU CAN FIND US
Another truly troubled troubadour
AT THE SIDESHOW
Writing songs to even up the score
YEA, ME
A tune for every single body blow
AND THE BUFFALO
And I sing 'em at the sideshow
YOU CAN FIND US
Back in the corner where the sad songs flow
Come in, take a chair
Nothing else to do out there
Is what you want, what you need
Decisions made in privacy
Step right up and name your game
Take a chance, pick a card, any card
I'll guess your age, I'll name your fate
Don't be shy I'm waiting
Come to the sideshow
Come to the sideshow, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
Mysterious and curious
Boredom is so serious
The red velvet curtain draws
There's no way to hide your flaws
Now you've come to see your show
It feels like what you've learned ain't vogue
Do you know what you're looking at
Can you see what is staring back
You're in the sideshow
Come to the sideshow, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
The government, firmament, spearmint, double mint
Handshaking, green berets, looking cool and talking sharp
And you say this and that and that ain't where it's at
Time can wash away the fears
Stay away from the devil's tears
Get off your knees and on your feet
Can you feel the heartbeat
Come to the sideshow
Come to the sideshow, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
Time can wash away the fears
Stay away from the devil's tears
Off your knees and on your feet
Don't be shy I'm waiting
Come to the sideshow
Come to the sideshow, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come to the sideshow, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
Come to the sideshow
You're in the sideshow
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown
Come to the sideshow
Come and get your mind blown, yeah
Come to the sideshow
Come get your mind blown

Your brain's a fuckin' thimble with a slow leak
Your thoughts are so fucking shallow
That a mouse couldn't drown
It makes me sick to hear the words you speak
When we both know when you talk
There's nothing underneath
So you look into my face and say
"Why do you act this way?"
You want the truth
It's sad but true
Society screwed me and so did you
Shun me cuz I'm not part of your act
Well you'll never understand what you have done
Time will tell whether you are worthy
I've touched you all in one way or another
I could show you so much more
If you'd open your eyes and your faith
Sideshow in my mind
Twisting and smashing the thorn in my side
Your innocence was lost without a trace
Stolen by a foolish embrace
I'm very good at what I do
Deep inside you know it's true
I can show you so much
This goes beyond your tepid standards
There is no crusade
It's just whats there
It's all right here
It's all around
This life shatters and I feed of the vibes
Deepthroated emotions
Your tears incite
I'm stained I'm marked and I'm scarred
But I rise baby all the time!
I've burned countless s to survive
And I [censored] anytime!
Enter my sideshow
My rusty per playground
Nothing could please me more
