Celts in the Eastern Alps - Kingdom of Noricum and Taurisci
As Rome grew more and more powerful, many Celtic tribes decided to cooperate with the rising Mediterranean giant, instead of warring against it. The kingdom of Noricum is a great example of that.
While tribes like Taurisci and Iapodes still proved a threat, Rome now had a friend at its north-eastern border, allowing it to focus on the massive campaigns and conquests that brought large parts of western Europe into the fold.
Throughout this period, the Noricum trade and prosperity intensified and a local coinage was developed as a medium of exchange.
Taurisci were a warring tribe, their raids were mentioned across multiple scriptures and authors. They were not shy of pillaging and were predominantly hostile toward the Roman state.
Slaves, cattle and hides from the Celtic lands were exc...

Cimbrian War 113–101 BC - Roman - Germanic Wars DOCUMENTARY

By the middle of the II century BC, Rome has become the dominant force in the Mediterranean. Carthage, Seleucids, Macedon, Greek Leagues, a number of Gallic and Celtiberian tribes were defeated, and it seemed that Rome is invincible. However, the economic and political situation in the Republic was degrading, and the rivalry between the patricians and the plebes reached its peak. It was then, in 113 BC Rome was attacked by the Germanic tribes for the first time. The Cimbri and Teutoni moved from Jutland and Germania and raided the Roman territory. After a number of defeats, among them at the battle of Arausio - which was the worst since Hannibal, Republic has found a new savio...

Slaves, cattle and hides from the Celtic lands were exchanged for wine, olive oil and seafood. Baltic amber also traveled there through the Celtic lands.
Ironworking also played a big role in Celtic economy, which was adopted and improved from the preceding Hallstatt craft.
Besides the improved metallurgy, the Celts also brought new iron tools, and potter’s wheel.
The power of Taurisci dropped significantly around 40 BC, when the military coalition of them and Boii was annihilated in a battle against Dacians led by King Burebista and the Roman Empire soon annexed their territory.
If Taurisci were a part of the Kingdom of Noricum, they probably had a large role to play. However, Taurisci had a longer and more often history of conflicts with Romans than other neighboring chiefdoms, acting on their own or in cooperation with non-Norican tribes of Histri, Iapodes and Carni.
A big distinction is also coins. The Noricum coins depict horse and its rider, while Tauriscan depict only horses.
Without a doubt the lives of Taurisci and Noricum were interconnected in many ways. Perhaps some and not all Taurisci were a part of the kingdom of Noricum, the borders of which also fluctuated with time. The different coins and foreign policy to Rome indicate separate entities, but the blurry line between them is as unresolved today, as it was confusing for the ancient writers. The relationship between these two was not always friendly either and it was changing with time.
Which of these people came first and if these were at first a single entity which then split, remains unknown.
The most probable theory we have today is that Taurisci was a union of different tribes, some of which were included in the kingdom of Noricum, which fluctuated in size. Meanwhile other Tauriscii remained more independent and hostile towards Rome.

Forgotten ancient Celts of western and northern Ukraine (7 BC - 5 AD). Did you known that second by size in Europe Celtic metallurgical center was located near Mukachevo (Lovachka) in western Ukraine (in Zakarpattya oblast)? This famous Noric steel (by Celtic tribe of Norici of Pannonia basin that includes Transcarpathian Ukraine) was largely used in the making of Roman weapons. Forests of western and northern Ukraine were home of ancient Celtic tribes, who spoke Celtic languages related to Welsh, Cornish and Irish (though Tacitus noted that the Celtic language of Britain differed little from that of Gaul). Boii and wandering Volcae (who reached as far as
Asia Minor) must have been among these Celtic tribes who penetrated into Ukraine. Herodotus mentions Neuri (6 BC) who lived north west of Scythians (that is north western Ukraine) and worshiped the wolf (known Celtic totem), turning into wolves once per year. More and more discoveries have been made (by Ukrainian linguists, archaeologists) which indicated that Celts (along with Slavs and Scytho-Sarmats) played a role in the formation of Ukrainian people. Also the ancient Slavic pottery is closer to Celtic one than to Scythian or Roman. Ancient Celts lived among Slavs and Thracians and influenced them in many ways. The problem of researching so distant past is that we almost do not have any written sources - the comprehensive research of toponymics (placenames), as those done by Tyshchenko (book of 400 pages) discloses the unknown past. Also Celtic city Aliobrix was located in south Odesa oblast of south Ukraine (Danube delta).
It should also be remembered that the declaration of Scottish independence, made in 1320 - The Declaration of Arbroath solemnly declares to the English king Edward that Celtic Scots came from Scythia (Ukraine) - hence their name Scots (Scyths): http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/scotland/arbroath_english.html
Music: Famous soundtrack "Promentory" from the movie "The Last of Mohicans'" (I cut off the first 10 sec. of boring "introduction")

After a number of defeats, among them at the battle of Arausio - which was the worst since Hannibal, Republic has found a new savior in Gaius Marius. This brilliant general reformed the legions and defeated the Germanic tribes at the battles of Aquae Sextae in 102 BC and Vercellae in 101 BC to end this threat. Although Marian Reform was essential for the future conquests, it also planted the seeds of the future civil wars and gave the opportunity to Sulla and Caesar to end the Republic.

When Austrian President Franz Jonas visited the Vatican in 1971, Pope Paul VI named Austria “the Island of the Blessed.” He did so to emphasize Austria’s steep recovery. Only twenty-five years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and Austria was already one of the most prosperous European countries.
