A bailiwick (pronounced /ˈbeɪlɨwɪk/) is usually the area of jurisdiction of a bailiff, and may also apply to a territory in which the sheriff's functions were exercised by a privately appointed bailiff under a royal or imperial writ. The word is now more generally used in a metaphorical sense, to indicate a sphere of authority, experience, activity, study or interest. A bailiwick (German: “Ballei”) was also the territorial division of the Teutonic Order. Here, various “Komtur(en)” formed a Ballei province.
The term survives in administrative usage in the British Crown dependencies of the Channel Islands, which for administrative purposes are grouped into the two bailiwicks of Jersey (comprising the island of Jersey and uninhabited islets such as the Minquiers and Écréhous) and Guernsey (comprising the islands of Guernsey, Sark, Alderney, Brecqhou, Herm, Jethou and Lihou). Each Channel Island bailiwick is headed by a Bailiff.
At Bicester in Oxfordshire, the lord of the manor of Market End was the Earl of Derby who, in 1597, sold a 9,999 year lease to 31 principal tenants. This in effect gave the manorial rights to the leaseholders, ‘purchased for the benefit of those inhabitants or others who might hereafter obtain parts of the demesne’. The leaseholders elected a bailiff to receive the profits from the bailiwick, mainly from the administration of the market and distribute them to the shareholders. From the bailiff’s title, the arrangement became known as the Bailiwick of Bicester Market End. By 1752 all of the original leases were in the hands of ten men, who leased the bailiwick control of the market to two local tradesmen.

Sir Timothy Miles Bindon "Tim" Rice (born 10 November 1944) is a British lyricist and author. An Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning lyricist, Rice is best known for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber, with whom he wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and additional songs for the 2011 West End revival of The Wizard of Oz, and for his work for Walt Disney Studios with Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, King David), Elton John (The Lion King, Aida) and Ennio Morricone.
Rice was born at Shardeloes, an historic English country house near Amersham, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom that was requisitioned as a maternity hospital during World War II. His father, Hugh Gordon Rice, served with the Eighth Army and reached the rank of major during World War II, whilst his mother, Joan Odette (née Bawden), served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) as a photographic interpreter. Dennis DeYoung (born February 18, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, musician and producer best known for being a founding member of the rock band Styx as lead vocalist, keyboardist and primary songwriter, a tenure that lasted from 1961 until June 1999.
Growing up in the Roseland neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, DeYoung's career as a vocalist started in 1961 at the age of 14 when he teamed up with his 13-year-old neighbors, Chuck and John Panozzo, in a three-piece combo. The trio later added guitarist James Young and John Curulewski to form the band Tradewinds in the late 1960s. The band renamed itself TW4 in 1968 before becoming Styx in 1970.
Before the band met with success, DeYoung spent time as an elementary school teacher in the southern suburbs of Chicago, where he taught music at Kolmar School in Midlothian, Illinois. During this period, the band played a number of small venues and school auditoriums, refining their craft before the song "Lady" propelled them to national, then international, stardom.

one drink won't take away.

Rumour true, rumour false-

And every mistake that I've ever made
comes back to haunt me,

What type of world are you living in?
What type of sweet thing
would make the medicine better?
What kind of world are you waiting for?
You give me one of those headaches

It doesn't happen here,
this is a nice place.

I gave you houses, I gave you furs,
I gave you them before you had the first.
I gave you kisses, I stroked your fur,
I love a woman now that you've had the first.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
Get out of my face.
You took the houses, you took the furs.
You took another after you took the first.
You took my kisses, and those of fur,
now I love a woman and it's the first.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
Get out of my face.
Get out of my face.
Get out of my face, out of my face.

You know you have me to keep at will
whatever whets you fancy, whatever you will.
Took what you want, took what you will.
Take my schonker baby and drink your fill
It's not you, I won't give you all.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
It's not you, I won't give you all.
It's not you, I won't give you all.

I make no promises,
I make no guarantees,
it makes no difference
when you're all at sea.
Try me for money,
you can try me for days,
I'll be indifferent
when you've none you can't pay.
Say something good to me,
say it's not always.
You've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
We can do it, we can do it,
all we need is the money.
Oh, you've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
You made your preference,
you made your guarantees
and it made no difference
we're still all at sea.
Tell me it's working now
you can tell me for days,
I'll be indifferent,
there's no justice this way.
Oh, say something good to me,
say it's not always.
You've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
We can do it, we can do it,
all we need is the money.
Oh, you've got the power,
now, now give us the means.

Oh, say something good to me,
say it's not always.
You've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
We can do it, we can do it,
all we need is the money.
Oh, you've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
Hey, you've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
Oh, you've got the power,
now, now give us the means.
Hey, hey what you say just might be true But I still can't take a chance on you if it's true Oh if it's true We've had our problems just trying to make the whole thing last You thought that we might break if we drove too fast Oh it is true Just like I used to do
I was right, you were wrong Who's picking holes in who? You were always a silly child I was right, you were wrong Oh look at you You were always a silly child
Hey, hey what you say just might be true Then there'll be nothing left of me and you when I'm through if it's true You are my target, I plan to make this last a while I could sit and watch you suffer with a smile Just like I used to do
Sometimes I wonder
at this shame I hide,
pare away the man
and find the worm inside.
Your mind's unclear
and instinct is a lie,
I hear what you say you'd do
and I wish it was true.
How can he take you
when you give yourself?
All the old lines
just to bind yourself,
then you wrap yourself around me
and whisper in my ear.
Where is your jealousy?
All I feel is fear.
I want to hear it,
and I want to see.
Let me watch you make love
and imagine that it's me.
(solo)
I want to hear it,
and I want to see.
Let me watch you make love
and imagine that it's me.
Listen to the money while it talks,
makes you feel used up and small.
You're caught between its hands.
Why did you try at all?
I listened and remembered what he said-
"What's good for me is good for you.
Be careful what you wish for-
It might come true."
That sometimes, at night,
when you're alone inside your bed,
you think about the things that have been said.
That sometimes your life begins to go
in directions you don't like.
You can't resist the flow.
If you listen then you might.
Then you might.
Listen once and listen good,
what's lost is never coming back.
The people that you trust
are the people you should watch.
Ohh and sometimes, at night,
when you're alone inside your bed,
you think about the things that have been said.
That sometimes your life begins to go
in directions you don't know.
Never knew what you would find.
If you listen then you might.
(solo)
Listen and remember what he said-
"What's good for me is good for you.
Be careful what you wish for-
It might come true."
That sometimes, at night,
when you're alone inside your bed,
you think about the things that have been said.
That sometimes your life begins to go
in directions you don't like.
You can't resist the flow.
If you listen then you might.
Then you might.
Seeing you,
I knew why I'd come so far,
and I thanked the stars
for leading me to you.
Your fairy tale prince,
I'm trying so hard
to make like an orchard
in my own back yard.
Oh the rain dribbles down
me in my beatitude,
my collar and shirt,
down legs to battered shoes.
Life is a breeze!
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
And I'm still living
my teenage angst,
on the printed page
and in other ways.
So if I seem cruel,
it's only the fool in me,
that wants to try
and see if you'll cry.
Oh the rain dribbles down
me in my beatitude,
my collar and shirt,
down legs to battered shoes.
Life is a breeze!
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
(solo)
Uh I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
No need to ask why
I'm mischief and joy,
I'm still the tall boy
who just wouldn't crawl.
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
no need to ask you're the best,
you're the best that I've had.
(I'm just making memories)
I'm just making memories
you're the best that I've had.
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
I'm just making memories,
good times or bad,
(I'm making, I'm making)
I'm just making memories,
you're the best that I've had.
So many problems,
so many dreams, so many hangdog faces.
So many ways to say
"oh! I'll never see another day
with you in it".
So listen while you can,
the first time that you ever have.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired of it.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired.
I can count your saving graces on two fingers.
Love them, sit on them.
You told me that you're not afraid to die.
And dying's easy, life that's hard.
I don't believe a word.
So listen while you can,
the first time that you ever have.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired of it.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired.
So listen while you can,
the first time that you ever have.
Life's not easy,
but it's all you have.
(solo)
So I can count on you.
Don't ever, never, never, never, never
let it split away.
And dying's easy?
I think I'll try it out today!
(I just grew tired),
grew tired, grew tired of it.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired.
I just grew tired,
grew tired, grew tired
of love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
Gone and gone for good,
grown up and slipped away.
Passed from now to then
like a river going by
to rush headlong into the sea.
She hears the band and play "Ave Lolita".
She sees her future coming to her in a flash-
starts counting hours, starts counting minutes,
and walks the line she still can't define-
Ave Lolita.
If you sleep at all, sleep well
for the coming day won't spare you.
If fear is the key,
you are lost outside the door
and you've been there before.
When you heard the band play "Ave Lolita"
she caught her future rushing by her in a flash.
Start counting hours, start counting minutes
and walk the line while there's still time-
Ave Lolita.
Watch the sky for details,
watch the distance for fire,
fiery pinpricks our of reach,
I can't hold the lines of words to tick them off,
but it won't be long now...
She hears the band play "Ave Lolita",
she sees her future coming to her in a flash-
starts counting hours, starts counting minutes,
and walk the line she still can't define-
Ave Lolita.
The walls are closing in. And who will drive you out? Who will clear your dreams of your heart's debris?
There's no-one, none, nothing. In the fullness of time.
But oh such a stupid boy to wear his pain like a badge. I though I mattered. My mistake.
There's no-one, none, nothing. In the fullness of time.
So many
It's time to shout, it's time to let them know what we're about As winter kisses frosty cold and hard to hands I'll waste not an ounce of my time Now that summer's in time To hold back the night Keep me up from the fire Back to the wheel.
Don't look down, Don't ever let them know you're down For if we are, we are If we're not, so what ? I'll waste not an ounce of my time Now that summer's in time To hold back the night Keep me up from the fire Back to the wheel.
I never courted suffering,
never valued paid,
I'm not cruel, or a fool
just not used to it!
And now our fingers stay where
once they hurried past.
We've the time and the place,
let's get used to it.
And never feel lonely (I don't want to)
and never stay hungry (I don't care to)
you are what people say you are,
whatever people say you are,
how can you stay happy?
We never would admit,
no, not to a man,
if you can't
get what you want, get what you can.
But you always made me feel
like I've just recieved
and invite
to last week's Halloween.
And never feel lonely (I don't want to)
and never stay hungry (I don't care to)
you are what people say you are,
whatever people say you are,
how can you stay happy?
If I'm wrong I will take it all back,
if you ask.
It's the price of good fortune I ask-
if I can, if I can.
(solo)
And never feel lonely (I don't want to)
and never stay hungry (I don't care to)
you are what people say you are,
whatever people say you are,
how can you stay happy?
Oh, and never feel lonely (I don't want to)
and never stay hungry (I don't care to)
you are what people say you are,
whatever people say you are,
how can you stay happy?, stay happy?
I think my heart must be made of clay,
'cause everyone said it would be broken someday.
And now I've come to that fateful day,
so I sit on the floor
with my head in my hands.
And don't tell me how to make it pay,
I write a new song every day.
I just wish I was made of wood,
I might not feel pain,
even if I should, even if I should,
if I should.
The sweetest smile that ever did
melt the pats in the butter dish,
and if you could have believed in me,
I swear to God
I'd have made damn sure.
Our hearts were warm, and glad with wine.
I'd keep the doors locked all the time.
I just wish I was made of wood,
You might not seem glad,
even if you should, even if you should,
if you should, if you should,
if you should.
(solo)
I think my heart must be made of clay,
'cause everyone said it would be broken someday.
Seems like I have come to that fateful day,
so I sit on the floor
with my head in my hands,
with my head in my hands.
If I should, if I should,
if I should, uh if I should.
Do you remember
the way things used to be?
Our lives untainted by memory,
and we laughed, and we cried,
and we played, and we fought,
never stopped to think,
oh, never stopped to think
that this could be
(this could be the big one)
oh, this could be the big one.
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
oh, this could be the big one.
Explain just how we came to part,
I never really wanted to.
And now we flounder
in the wake of those days,
we wish we'd never found out each other's ways,
and we laugh, and we flirt,
and we cried, and made love,
could it be the same?,
how could it be the same?
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
this could be the big one.
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
this could be the big one.
Oh, tell me how we came to part,
I never really wanted to,
never wanted to.
(solo)
Oh, tell me how we came to part,
I never really wanted to.
Oh, this could....
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
oh, this could be the big one.
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
this could be the big one.
This could be
(this could be the big one)
the big, big, big, big, big one.
Oh, this could be
(this could be the big one)
this could be the big one.
(this could be the big one)
this could be the big one
This could be
(this could be the big one)
Well now, you
wouldn't stay
and there's not much more that I can say
but your lips
that I kissed
will never go away
from my memory
they will remain with me.
You were tied, now you're gone,
there was time, now it's gone.
Is this the best
we can do?
Have we come as far as we intend to?
This was comedy,
it is true,
I was not innocent under you.
Ah my memories,
they will remain with me.
You were tied, now you're gone,
there was time, now it's gone,
now it's gone.
You were tied, now you're gone,
there was time, now it's gone,
now it's gone.
Ah my memories,

there was time, now it's gone,
now it's gone.
You were tied, now you're gone,

Little queen beware, fashion tempers flare,
and they light up with a brilliant glare
page after page, after page, after page,
after page.
A hollow vase only costs ten pounds
but an empty vessel makes the loudest sound,
and you have to get heard in this loudest of towns-
or go under.
We don't care if you can't pay,
we don't care what you've got to say,
we don't hear when you cry out-
Our smiles are hollowed out.
Let's talk about me.
(Vamos a hablar de ti)
Let's talk about me.

get the big city blues every single night.

not ever.

seeking solitude in the company of others.

You're a big girl now
with a big girl's needs
and a big girl's dreams
and promises.
Why don't you accept yourself,
accept your desires
and meet your needs,
deny your problems?
And don't
cry, cry, don't cry,
oh, you're a big girl now.
It's so hard to be humble
when you know you're worth more
to live and learn
is all we can hope for.
And attraction of pasts
like the blindness of the summer sun
oh, but what will you do,
oh, when the rain comes through.
If it's to be then don't
cry, cry, don't cry,
And don't
cry, cry, don't cry.
Why don't you accept yourself,

Don't cry.
You should see my world
how it crumbled inside.
You should see my world
from the inside.
Walls can have ears
but what about you.
It's not over,
it's not over yet.
Oh, I'll hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
Oh, I'll hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
But the truth of if is
I was never so brave
as to speak my own mind
to misbehave.
Mouths can tell lies
and they often do.
It's not over,
it's not over yet.
I'll hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
But what if it's true,
what if it's true,
But what if it's true,
what if it's true.
You should see my world
how it crumbled inside.
You should see my world
from the inside.
Say it's a good one,
I so rarely do.
It's not over,
it's not over yet.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love, for love.
I will hold you in my arms,
I will hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love, for love.
But what if it's true.
It is true.
I will hold you,
I will hold you.
(Whatever it takes to get through)
Hold you, hold you.
Hold you, hold you.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
I'll hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love.
I will hold you in my arms,
I'll hold you in my heart,
I'm holding out for love, for love.
I'll hold you,
I will hold you,
I will hold you,
I will hold you.
Here we are,
between the towers of
love and devotion.
Why can't we
seem to be
what we want to be?
Always placing obstacles
in our path, in our way.
I try to ride the chill in me,
but here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Here we are,
and here we'll stay,
wrapped up in an ocean,
a veil of tears,
imagined fears,
and God knows why.
But whatever I try to do
it goes in right,
and comes out wrong.
I try to ride the chill in me,
but here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
(solo)
Whatever I try to do
it always goes in right,
and comes out wrong.
I try to ride the chill in me,
but here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Here it comes again.
(Here it comes again,
here it comes again,
play with me,
tearing all my world apart)
Now and again
an innocent shines
out from the crowd
and scenes
that roll down the streets
the inhuman streams,
down from the trees,
and up from their knees.
Jump overboard,
strike for the shore,
leave your clothes to the fire.
Counting the days your innocence paid.
You can play it, re-arrange it,
you can change your mind.
Tell me how
the horrors escape
as we follow their trail
'til dark.
Once for the need,
twice for the thrill,
into the groves,
into the groves.
Wash up ashore,
follow the call,
leave your debts behind you.
Counting the ways that innocence pays.
You can play it, re-arrange it,
you might change your mind.
(solo)
In the big city heat
a photo can fade,
who were the saints
of old?
Keep a brush at your heels
and cover your tracks,
aim for the higher
ground in the field.
Jump overboard,
strike for the shore,
leave your clothes to the fire.
Counting the days your innocence paid.
You can play it, re-arrange it,
you can change your mind.
Change your mind.
Change your mind.
Change your mind.
It's late an I'm drunk and my stomach
sounds like the hot water pipes in the attic room,
and who'd have though the sky could hold
so much snow inside of it just to let it go.
The stars may shine and the moon
may be blue, but what comes,
comes from you?
I was meant to take you there
We could pack our bags and be
on our way.
Hold on to your childlike fears
all your worries, tantrums, tears
I don't need to know
The stars may shine and the moon
may be blue, but what comes,
comes from you?
So don't turn around
'cause that's paradise lost.
Don't turn away,
mersey rose.
Nothing good could last forever.
No, don't turn around
'cause that's paradise lost.
The very place
that we chose.
Only dreams could last forever.
Hold it now,
there is something you should know
I was never turn away from you
My intentions are clear,
that's the only truth.
My only wish is never to lose.
So don't turn around
'cause that's paradise lost.
Don't turn away,
mersey rose.
Nothing good could last forever.
And don't turn around
'cause that's paradise lost.
The very place
that we chose.
Only dreams could last forever.
Don't turn around.
Don't turn away,
mersey rose.
Only dreams could last forever
Don't turn around.
Don't turn away,
mersey rose.
Only dreams could last forever
Don't turn around,
'cause that's paradise lost.
Only dreams could last forever.
Don't turn away,
this paradise lost.
Nothing good could last forever.
(Water On Snow)
Did I sleep? Do I dream of cold, silent water
So deep and dark
And the wires are singing our song?
Our song
As we lay back and stared into cloudless skies
And the stars up there
The wires are singing our song
The wires are singing our song
Your face, now so plain, once was so lovely
A beautiful refrain, dust with stars
But your smile now in disguise became a flat line
And to never love again like you did before
Was all
Why go on with it, why go on with it?
Why, to let it flow, like water on snow?
I know what you want, what you are thinking
To drift beyond the pain and out of reach
To sit, be safe and warm inside your sorrow
And listen to the slow, slow morse tapping of the rain
But it says:
Why go on with it? Why go on with it?
It is true maybe
you never ask for much
but when your heart's been broken
into tiny little pieces,
who will pick them up?
You know who'll pick them up.
(That's just like love to see you through)
You know who'll pick them up.
(That's just like love to see you through)
You live with the silence,
it wraps your every mood
with tender velvet fingers
and they cling just like the ivy
on a sunny roof,
if that's what it takes to prove.
That you live with your weakness,
you face it every day,
but when you play the let's-make-lover's game
someone has to pay,
and you know who'll pay, and pay and pay.
(That's just like love to see you through)
You know who's gonna pay and pay and pay.
(That's just like love to see you through)
A little of friend, a devil as friend,
a little of friend we'll call him love.
If your face hurts
feel like a bruised dog in a dusty street,
but you've got lipstick on your feet.
Lose your sad and wizened stare,
reach out and I'll be there,
I will set your senses alight
and blow them out one by one.
(That's just like love to see you through)
And blow them out one by one.
(That's just like love to see you through)
You know who's gonna pay,
who pay and pay and pay and pay.
(That's just like love to see you through)
A little of devil, a friend, we'll call him love.
(That's just like love to see you through)
A little of devil, a friend, we'll call him love.
(That's just like love to see you through)
A friend, we'll call him love.
(That's just like love to see you through)
Your tender-eyes me with those baby browns,
'till I can't get around.
The fact that I still love you
and I'm not supposed to,
this is supposed to be over.
I'm not supposed to care.
I wanted not to
but you don't always do
what's best for you.
I no wanted to
but you don't always do
what's best for you.
What's best for you.
Was your first name "lover",
was your second "nomore".
What the hell were we lovers for
just to end up this way?
Now I feel that I can't go forward
and I can't go back.
And I wanted to
but you don't always do
what's best for you.
And I wanted to
but you don't always do
what's best for you,
what's best for you.
I curl up inside when I remember
all the times I was weak
and the drinks seem to fly
by like all passing years,
buying dear and selling cheap,
oh, selling cheap.
(solo)
You tried to make me so jealous,
I resented your point of view.
I wanted not to
but you don't always do
what's best for you.
And I wanted to
but you don't always do,
you don't always do,
what's best for you.
And I wanted to
but you don't always do,
you don't always do,
what's best for you.
Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There's magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to hide and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
Sun's in your eyes the heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
Because you're there
And I need a friend, oh, I need a friend
To make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to hide and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
I need a friend, oh, I need friend
To make me happy
Not so alone
Look at me here
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to hide and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
Wonderful life
Yes, I believe I'm not trouble sent to haunt you.
Tell you for truth or did no one ever warn you
til we stop these silly games.
I can't believe what you say.
I see your face across the miles and miles between us.
Do they separate, do they separate or join us,
do they join us at the hips.
I need to kiss your sweet lips.
There'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here with me.
(I'm wishing you were here)
There'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here.
(I'm wishing you were here)
I'm wishing you were here.
Turn out the lights if it helps to re-assure you.
Call me a fool but you can't only eat it twice,
so eat it slowly, let the juice run out.
and believe what I say.
Calling your name across the miles and miles between us,
I see your face and the laugh lines reading join us,
join us right there at the hips
and I can taste your sweet lips.
And there'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here with me.
(I'm wishing you were here)
There'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here.
(I'm wishing you were here)
I'm wishing you were here.
(solo)
I see your face across the miles and miles between us.
Do they separate, do they separate or join us,
do they join us at the hips.
I need to kiss your sweet lips.
And there'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here with me.
(I'm wishing you were here)
There'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here.
(I'm wishing you were here)
And there'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here with me.
(I'm wishing you were here)
There'll be sparks in the rain,
honey in your hair,
I'm wishing you were here.
(I'm wishing you were here)
I'm wishing you were here.
Your life
is like free to fly,
if feeling it is wrong
I don't ever want to feel it right.
It could almost be so,
it is sure to be so
sensational.
My prayer
is seldom heard
ease into my arms
and whisper liquid words of love.
It could give you everything
that you want it to,
if you want it to.
If only you would jump on board,
ride the train of thought,
wish the world awake.
If only you could break the line,
you could learn this time and
wish the world awake.
I close my eyes.
(Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up,
wish the world awake)
(Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up,
wish the world awake)
She gave
and gave of herself
'til there was nothing left
and got down on her knees and prayed.
Prayed for an angel to fill her empty soul,
do angels come so big?
I don't think so.
If only you would jump on board,
ride the train of thought,
wish the world awake.
If only you could break the line,
if only you could learn this time,
wish the world awake.
(If only you would jump on board)
ride the train of thought,
wish the world awake.
(If only you could break the line)
if only you could learn this time,
we could wish the world awake.
Sometimes you laugh,
sometimes we smile at each other,
sometimes you give a lot
when really you'd rather not.
And sometimes you pray,
sometimes you tell a lie,
sometimes you take a hold
of this your living day.
So many dreams for the asking
and I'll wager there's one here who'll try
to make a fool of you.
You're crying out for more,
Sometimes you laugh,
sometimes we smile at each other,
sometimes you give a lot
when really you'd rather not.
And sometimes you pray,
and sometimes you tell a lie,
sometimes you take a hold
of this your living day.
So many dreams for the asking
and I'll wager there's one here who'll try
to make a fool of you.
You're crying out for more,
So many dreams for the asking
and I'll wager there's one here who'll try
to make a man of you.
You're crying out for more,
(solo)
So many dreams for the asking
and I'll wager there's one here who'll try
to make a fool of you.
You're crying out for more,
So many dreams for the asking
and I'll wager there's one here who'll try
to make a man of you.
You're crying out for more,
You don't follow me now,
ribbons in hair
searching for answers when
there's none there.
Then follow me round,
up my stair
into my bedroom if
I'm in there.
Hoping for something
because it seems the right thing to do.
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You still follow me now,
temptingly fair
finding your answers when
there's none there
Hoping for something
because it seems the right thing to do.
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know what to do then
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
If your lonely heart is aching,
think you can't take any more,
you have to cup your hands to keep the light.
I will lean across your shoulder
and whisper in your ear
that this is life.
If you're old enough to face it,
you are old enough to fake it,
to get what you desire and still ask why.
Then I'll tap you on the shoulder
and whisper in your ear
that this is life.
This is what you struggled for,
no reprisals, no resistance,
this is life.
Can you answer me a question-
Have you lain awake at night,
the blinds undrawn, the ceiling streaked with light?
You feel tired but you can't sleep,
feel so hungry you can't eat-
Well, this is life.
Has your courage seemed to fail you
as you take your chosen path?
You pass a camel through a needle's eye.
Get up in tiny little pieces
and you've learnt the major rule:
that this is life.
This is what you waited for,
no rehearsals, no more stalling,
this is life.
Have it tattooed on the inside
of your pink and sleepy eyelids;
This is life.
This is life.
(solo)
Absence makes the heart grow fonder,
grow more foolish than we can ever guess.
You feel your nerve ends slowly coiling
and you hope the answer's "no", the answer's "yes".
This is what you struggled for,
no reprisals, no resistance,
this is life.
This is what you waited for,
no rehearsals, no more stalling,
this is life.
If you can't do what you ought,
lead by example, don't get caught,
'cause this is life.
Uh, this is life.
This is life.
This is life.
This is life.
This is life.
I run at things too fast,
only give them half a chance-
Say what you want, what you will,
but it's true.
I'm far too lazy,
I do enough but nothing more.
I like to drink, I like to play-
Do you too?
You never know
just what the blues are like
until you take
a taste of the sweet life.
I found an angel,
a reason to smile-
A best friend.
Until I knew her I never knew
what a woman can do-
Did what she want, did what she will-
Is it true?
She holds her own, she holds mine too,
we do a marry dance.
Do what we want, do what we will-
Do you too?
I brush her hair
and it crackles with the static-
I never meant to kiss her,
it was purely automatic.
She's my angel,
she's my Betty Blue,
she's my best friend.
(solo)
Her fingers drumming time, drumming time,
Drumming on my heating heart.
I got it good, I've got it bad-
It's true, uh-huh.
You never know
just what the blues are like
until you take
a taste of the sweet life.
I found an angel,
a reason to smile-
A best friend.
She's gone,
she's out of sight,
she's my love me tender,
my P. G. fright,
my lady day in the dead of night,
my best friend.
She's my best friend.
You know you're where it's at
but you don't know where that is,
when your friends come round smiling
and greet you with a kiss,
Then push you in the dirt
from behind.
There's no time like the right time
when the now times wearing thin
for their silver tinsel dresses
and their microwave skin
and their cheap books of romance.
I think I'll take my chances.
So I run like I'd run from a flood,
like you know it's understood.
That your golden hair
was never meant to wear
a paper crown.
You know that a smile
is their workaday face.
You can't calculate the effort
just to keep it in its place.
They don't shoot to kill, they'd always miss,
so shoot to wound.
Like they're always searching through your pockets
like they expect to find a answer.
The truth is that the truth is
as commonplace as cancer.
If you'd only take the time
you don't need to seek to find it.
Just run like I'd run from a flood,
like you know it's understood.
That your golden hair
was never meant to wear
a paper crown.
(solo)
Run like you'd run for good,
like the rivers running blood
and you see your life flashing by.
I run like I'd run from a flood,
like you know it's understood.
That your golden hair
was never meant to wear
a paper crown,
a paper crown,
a paper crown,
a paper crown.
Now it's complete,
Ravel is in the rain
standing in my dream street.
I'd like to meet
Ravel in New Orleans,
hold out my hand to his.
I was warned, now I'm old,
still searching for what I'm told
Is gone, is God, is not.
Don't try to leave,
I've tried so many times.
The street is named desire.
(solo)
I was warned, now I'm old
still searching for what I'm told
Is gone, is God, is not.
I was warned, now I'm old
still searching for what I'm told
Is gone, is God, is not.
There've been too many times
when I never said what was on my mind.
How was I to know you'd go so soon?
Your God would come to take you home
leaving me stumbling over
stupid lines on a shabby page.
Daddy, sometimes I'm filled with rage.
I lost the only thing that was really mine.
So daddy, can you hear me?
Oh daddy, do I still make you laugh?
And I know just what you'd say-
Is this really the time and place
to say all of those things that we never said?
There've been too many times
when my head was filled with stupid pride.
I hope you're laughing now
that all these words have been set aside.
Oh daddy, can you hear me?
Oh daddy, do I still make you laugh?
And I know just what you'd say-
Is this really the time and place
to say all of those things that we never said?
(solo)
It seems so long since I saw you,
and yet it seems like yesterday.
There's no need to make amends
for I look on us as friends.
Oh daddy, can you hear me?
Oh daddy, do I still make you laugh?
Oh daddy, can you hear me?
Oh daddy, do I still make you laugh?
Still make you laugh?
There've been too many times.
There've been too many times.
There've been too many times.
There've been too many times...
Hand me my five and dime,
pass me my shirt hung on the line.
I'll polish up my boots
and then take the first plane stateside I can find.
It's a handicap to try to see this far,
when this place seems so cramped and small.
In the streets they whisper legends
and it seems that I'm riding for a fall.
I'm leaving,
I'm leaving.
All of my sense is shot,
the streets are like a premonition of a crime.
I wrote without you,
then I took the first plane stateside I could find.
If they could they would've stopped me,
they'd say I'm gaping at a dream.
I'm leaving,
I'm leaving.
So I polish up my brand new car,
then take my tunes from door to door.
I try not to see their faces
as I'm dealing out my aces,
the horizon seems so far away.
From a penthouse for a king and queen
I expected more of the stuff of dreams.
If they can they like to get their man
and cut him right down to his knees.
And I'm reeling,
once again I'm leaving.
I'm leaving
and once again I'm leaving.
And I'm leaving,
once again I'm leaving.
Not for nothing at all,
not for nothing did I call,
reason is: you're often appalled.
Hold on now John, you never seemed cold!
I thought you were in love,
then I guess that you're not,
ah, but then the first thing you wrote
was: Hold on now John,
hold on now John,
hold on now John.
And now you don't answer when I call,
you don't answer then.
You don't answer when I call,
leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone.
Cabbages and kings in your dreams,
these are your dreams.
Maybe they're not quite what they seem.
Hold on now John,
the blame is undone.
Wash up the air,
don't drive that car,
never learn to play the guitar,
and leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone,
and leave yourself alone.
You don't answer when I call,
you don't answer then.
You don't answer when I call,
leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone.
You don't answer when I call,
you don't answer then.
You don't answer when I call,
leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone.
Sweeping up the ashes of rock,
sweeping up the ashes of roll,
years begin to take up their toll.
Though not for some
you've never seemed cold.
You don't answer when I call,
you don't answer then.
You don't answer when I call,
hold on now John,
hold on now John.
You don't answer when I call,
you don't answer then.
You don't answer when I call,
leave yourself alone,
leave yourself alone.
Baby,
once more I won't ask again,
don't tell me I should count to ten.
Think freely.
I won't attempt to curb your speech,
it sounds like something out of reach.
Oh, it's crazy,
when I think of how I feel so free,
maybe there is something wrong with me.
Could be!
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
and that's fine by me.
Bingo!
You've said it, you don't care to play,
just drag on through another day.
Oh, maybe
it's time you learn to play the fool,
break some of your silly rules.
Oh, and someday,
when you think you can't do anymore,
I'll be lying here to break your fall,
so small.
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
that's fine by me.
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
and that's fine by me.
(solo)
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
that's fine by me.
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
and that's fine by me.
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
and that's fine by me,
and that's fine by me.
Hey baby, love the way you walk-
Got a knock-kneed swing goes back and forth.
I could lose myself in the curve of you hips
aching to kiss your sweet lips.
Yeah baby, I love your eyes-
They're sea green but they seem twice as deep.
Like a man crossing the gridge of sights
I am afraid to sleep.
And miss the sweet the breath of your rapture.
The sweet breath of your rapture.
Hey baby, love to hold your hands,
but sometimes the best laid plans
dissapear like a smoke ring
in a shifting wind.
And yeah baby, I love your smile,
it's worth the wait, it's worth the while
and it makes my raw, sagging spirits rise-
It makes them soar, it makes them fly.
To taste the sweet breath of your rapture.
The sweet breath of your rapture.
To taste the sweet breath of your rapture.
(solo)
So make a guess, take a chance.
When my fortune is made,
what will I do?
I'll be straight to your room
To taste the sweet breath of your rapture.
The sweet breath of your rapture.
The sweet breath of your rapture.
Hey baby, hey baby
Sweet breath of your rapture.
The sweet breath of your rapture.
Hey baby, hey baby
The sweet breath of your rapture.
Everything changes when you think about it,
there's not much you can do about it.
But another broken Irish sat on park bench,
Feel his life like a gut wrench,
like it's passing him by.
So I feel like change,
I feel like walking out and standing in the rain.
I feel like change,
I feel like change.
Everything changes as you stare at it,
we've all learned to live with it.
But another bag lady, beggar man, thief,
another low flyer came to grief,
can barely stand.
So I feel like change,
I feel like walking out and standing in the rain.
I feel like change,
I feel like change.
I never wanted to write this song.
It won't hel what's going on-
When we look at what's going on,
two rights could make a wrong.
(solo)
Feel like change, feel like change.
This is such a pointless fight.
Two songs won't make it right.
Three songs won't make it right.
Maybe a hundred songs might make it right.
Sing it.
So I feel like change,
I feel like change,
I feel like change.
And so I feel like change,
I feel like change,
I feel like change...
Gonna fly up to the moon,
raising all of my money.
Can't make it too soon,
I am sick of it down here.
Gonna rise up to the moon.
So this is how the world ends-
Not with a bang but with a wimpy.
Don't laugh too soon-
I am sick of it down here.
Gonna rise up to the moon.
Who needs all the troubles of today?
What's the difference anyway?
I feel out of focus, what can I do?
There's only you.
Gonna fly up to the moon,
raising all of my money.
Can't make it too soon,
I am sick of it down here.
Gonna rise up to the moon.
When they open the borders where will you be?
I'll climb the highest tree
to avoid the stampede-
And if I should fly
only you, you,
there's only you,
that would say goodbye.
You don't believe me
I can tell it by your eyes
There's a kind of magic to be had from your lies.
I used to say that today is like tomorrow
Don't sell it short for truth.
I should have known
I should have known
should have known how
I should have known
I should have known by now
but now
Everything is coming up roses
everything is coming up roses.
You don't understand it
I can tell it by your smile
There's a kind of freedom to be had from your lies.
I always said that today is like tomorrow
Don't sell it short for truth.
I should have known
I should have known
should have known how
Everything is coming up roses
everything is coming up
coming up
Everything is coming up roses.
Everything is coming up roses
everything is coming up roses
Everything is coming up roses
everything is coming up
coming up
I can laugh about it now,
but couldn't then
you made me ache,
so I went for a run
in the driving rain
through your neighbourhood streets
and then there you were,
a shilouette in the wet night air.
Me in my pumps in
the pouring rain in
a kind of despair
upon finding you there,
couldn't whisper your name.
So, I can laugh about it now
by your side
Oh I can laugh about it now
by your side
Oh, sha la la la,
we're all in trouble,
is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?
And the very next day,
through the shrieks of the crowd
came your careless self
your oh-so-couldn't careless self.
And you just pass me by,
your friends catch my eyes
"we know you love her,
we saw you dancing with her shadow".
And I couldn't disagree,
and for the life of me
I could call out your name,
and call out your name,
and call out your name.
Oh, I can laugh about it now
by your side
I can laugh about it now
by your side.
Oh, sha la la la,
we're all in trouble,
is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?
Sha la la la,
oh we're all in trouble,
or is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?, on earth?
I can laugh about it now
I can laugh about it now
by your side.
Oh, sha la la la,
oh we're all in trouble,
or is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?
Sha la la la,
we're all in trouble,
or is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?
Sha la la la,
is there room in the sky
for all of us angels here
on earth?, on earth?
I used to hide,
I used to cry a lot,
but now I don't
It's you, you.
When you smile
the whole world's sky,
when you smile
I'm a star in that sky
It's you, it's you.
And we're barely friends,
we're hardly star-crossed lovers,
but who cares?
It's you, it's you.
When you smile
the whole world's sky,
when you smile
I'm a star in that sky.
It's you, it's you.
It's you.
All the way from America
holding out your hand.
You pinned your colours to the mast,
pinned them high up in the sky.
Look what you do to me,
my hands keep thumping waltz in triple time.
She wrote,
all the way from America
arriving just as planned,
passing through the blocks and alleyways,
the avenues, I'm crying.
Look what you do to me,
look what your tender hands have done this time.
And I say,
don't take the silence too hard,
don't take the silence too hard,
your absence lasts through every passing year.
Don't take the silence too hard.
All the way from America
straining with my eyes
to see the hours stretched out before me
as I cross the ocean line.
Look what you do for me,
my hands are ruby warm and I feel fine.
And I sail
to the home of erotica
pictured on the stand,
kneel down and pray you take no burdens
out of the promised land,
into the mystery.
Your eyes are full of tales of idle hands.
She says,
don't take the silence too hard,
don't take the silence too hard,
your absence lasts through every passing year,
don't take the silence too hard.
(solo)
All the way from America
holding out your hand.
You pinned your colours to the mast,
pinned them high up in the sky.
Look what you do to me,
my hands keep thumping waltz in triple time.
Don't take the silence too hard,
don't take the silence too hard,
don't take the silence too hard,
don't take the silence too hard,
Don't take,
don't take,
don't take,
don't take,
don't take the silence too hard.
I want you,
I want you,
for everything you do,
you do
to take a piece.
I need you,
I need you,
'cause everything you do
is right on cue
to take a piece.
You're my find
but I'll take my time
until your eyes
have dimmed from hot
to soft and mellow.
You tease me
to please me.
Like everything you do,
you do
to take a piece.
(solo)
You are like a team,
a vixen queen.
You turn my spine
from diamond hard
to soft and yellow.
And I want you,
I want you,
for everything you do,
you do
to take a piece.
Everything you do,
you do
to take a piece.
For everything you do,
you do
to take a piece.
Too many souls are lost,
so many dreams lie broken.
Will you try to help them
chase the night away,
turn on the booming silver day.
We do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime,
make the moment suit the time,
we make the rescue fit the crime.
And feel each passing year
absorb the well of tears.
They shoot horses, don't they?
So we dance and sway
into the pulsing, silver grey.
We do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime,
make the moment suit the time,
we make the rescue fit the crime.
So many people fail,
so many hearts are broken.
We come to live with pain,
we leave our arms wide open.
We do it in swing time.
Too many fights are thrown,
we count the cost of it growing.
Will you try to stop them,
roll away the night,
break out the champagne, hit the lights.
We do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime,
make the moment suit the time,
we make the rescue fit the crime.
(solo)
We do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime,
make the moment suit the time,
we make the rescue fit the crime.
We do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime,
make the moment suit the time,
we make the rescue fit the crime.
We do it in swingtime,
we do it in swingtime,
we don't count the skinny seconds
passing by or wonder why.
We do it in swingtime.
The cotton is high
The field is still full
The dust is drifting everywhere
A harvest moon comes up in the sky
The blues to shake me, wake me
It's a long way down to the birth of the blues
I haven't very far to fall since they were born
and came to haunt this singing fool since day one
There's so many ways to sing the blues
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, not afraid
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, to let them break me
A harvest moon comes up in the sky
The cotton chokes me, makes me dry
I know that I'm unafraid and so I am
Just a ghost that walks through the room
I'll blame it on the moonshine brew; whisky and wine
Like dust in my eyes making pats of kidney
There's so many ways to sing the blues
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, not afraid
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, to let them break me
The cotton is high
The field is still full
The dust is drifting everywhere
No! It's happening again, the blues are shaking, waking me
It's a long way down to the birth of the blues
I haven't very far to fall since they were born
And came to haunt this singing fool since day one
There's so many ways to sing the blues
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, not afraid
I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid, to let them break me
Ha ha (woo ahh)
Can't nobody tell me what I can
'cause I be lovin' my man rediculously
Well I should ashame
Can't nobody tell me what I can (what what huh huh ha)
Can't nobody tell me what I can
'cause I be lovin' my man rediculously
Well I should ashame
Can't nobody tell me what I can (what what huh huh yea)
Ain't nobody ever say I don't love my man
Who are you to justify what I can and can't
I'll make him love me even more
I done givin' him more than I did before
Chorus:
And I do
Give him the love that he wants
And I do
Give him the love that he needs
And I do
Give him the love that no girl in this world
Could ever touch
And I do
(Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
(Sho Woop Sho Woop)
(Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
(Sho Woop Sho Woop)
(Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
Won't nobody ever share the bond we had
Who are you to manipulate the trust in my man
Gonna show the world what we're made of
Wrapped in his arms he can't get enough
Oh So-ucky So-ucky Now!
Chorus:
And I do
Give him the love that he wants
And I do
Give him the love that he needs
And I do
Give him the love that he wants
And I do
Give him the love that he needs
And I do
give him the love...
that no girl in this world
Could ever touch
And I do
(Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
(Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
(Ohhhh) (Da de de DaDa, Da de de DaDa)
(Sho Woop Sho Woop)
You ain't never heard a cop like that
Be trynna hurl me out of my relations nonstop
(Sho Woop Sho Woop)
Time to get the pom poms
Would you wanna hit me with
I'm like the driest curls you ever drip drop
(Sho Woop Sho Woop)
Possibly L-A-dies these days just don't be givin' a kuff
When you thinkin' (Sho Woop Sho Woop)
that you lovin' your man
It's when he tap you on your shoulder sayin'
Baby you ain't givin' me love (what)
I do
Give him the love that he wants
I, I, I, I, do
Give him the love that he needs
I, I, I, I, do
Give him the love that he wants
I, I, I, I, do
Give him the love that he needs
