Lynton and Barnstaple Steam Heritage Railway Spring Gala 10th & 11th May 2014

The wind wasn't as bitterly cold as it was exactly a year ago, when the first two heritage coaches entered passenger service, but it blew just as hard! Mind you, Woody Bay station at almost 1000 feet up on Exmoor, the highest station on the whole Southern Railway, it's to be expected. One year on and we now have three beautiful coaches, with a fourth under restoration in Essex. To go with them, the recently restored new resident locomotive "Isaac" To the casual visitor, the L&B; may have seemed to be little more than a pleasure park railway. However, the arrival of three restored heritage coaches has transported the railway into a new era. It didn't take long for this to be recognised either. At the end of last year (2013) the railway won an award from the HRA (Heritage Railway Association). This train is now what the every day visitor will travel in. The previous "Thorpe Park" coaches are now for sale, they served well but there's just no comparison. The freight train was handled by our other loco "Axe" The railway is just a tantalising mile long at the moment, but we have big plans and in a few years we'll have several miles with longer term plans to reopen the entire 19 miles from Lynton to Barnstaple. Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Working Weekend Party 22nd-24th November 2013

Maybe it was the forecast prefect weather conditions or maybe just the growing interest in the railway. Whatever it was, the largest number of volunteers yet came from all over the country to take part in the first winter working weekend of 2013. Friday morning was spent "harvesting" fence posts from the current running line, using the railway's own very useful digger. The extracted posts were then replaced by dropper bars to maintain the fence's strength. In the afternoon and again on Saturday and Sunday, work moved to a site close to Caffyns Halt. Two substantial fence runs were reinstated, one being cleared of thick undergrowth then rewired, the other required most of the posts replacing using those we collected on Friday. Underneath bridge 74 was cleared a horrible tangle of concrete, metal and barbed wire, more pleasing was to see some lovely dry stone retaining walls cleared of undergrowth and the reinstatement of the Southern Railway bridge number plate which had been discovered by the landowner in the undergrowth. He could not be more enthusiastic about the railway's plans and helped out all weekend with his tractor and we don't even own this section yet. There was plenty of other undergrowth clearing along fence lines and the side of a steep cutting which kept the several bonfires well fueled. The second part of this film is from the Sunday afternoon and shows the almost completed work, it also shows the lovely views this stretch of line will give and the excellent condition of the track bed itself. Not to be forgotten were the two "grottettes" back at Woody Bay, Julia Snashall and Sonia Oakey, setting up for the Christmas visitors. Fancy joining in next time?? MORCHARD BISHOP is one of the larger parishes in the county lying east of the A377 Exeter / Barnstaple road and north west of Crediton, and having a population of just under 1,000. It nestles comfortably in the very heartland of Devon, midway between the north and south coast and sitting between the two great Moors, Dartmoor and Exmoor. The village is surrounded by hilly, unspoilt countryside, yet is within easy travelling distance of Crediton (approximately 7 miles), the City of Exeter (approximately 14 miles) and Tiverton (approximately 15 miles). The village is well served by local regular buses to Crediton and Exeter and is 2 miles from Morchard Road station on the Barnstaple to Exeter Tarka line. It has an attractive mixture of old thatched cottages and modern houses with amenities such as the parish church, primary school, Doctors Surgery, shop/post office, garage and London Inn. There is also a sports club, tennis court, village hall and a bowling green.
